Post-graduate surgical training at the Fiji National University (FNU), previously known as the Fiji School of Medicine) has recently been updated by incorporating elements from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) training curriculum. The revised curriculum maintains strong contextual relevance to the needs and pathologies of the Pacific Island nations.  This paper outlines why the FNU surgical postgraduate training programme should be applauded as a successful programme in the training of surgeons for the region.

The paper discusses the results of distance learning for students of the Pacific National University Pedagogical Institute, Department of Biology, Ecology, Chemistry. The positive and negative sides of the «distance» are revealed. Specific examples show that distance learning in the preparation of future teachers of chemistry and biology can be just one of the issues of the disciplines «Theory and methodology of teaching biology» and «Theory and methodology of teaching chemistry» as an innovative technology of teaching methods. Distance learning should not completely replace the traditional one.

The shell of the Soil database was developed on the basis of the 1C: Enterprise 8.2 software. Designed to combine information and systematize field research data, indicating on the interactive map the points of laying sections and soil sampling. The subsystem “Soil data” includes the subsections: “Sampling locations”, “Soil pollution”, “Physicochemical properties” and “Phytotoxicity”. All of them are presented in the form of hyperlinks to selected points on the city map. The database is constantly updated according to the results of research conducted at the Pacific National University. Information is the basis for the adoption of environmentally oriented management decisions on the development of the urban environment and environmental monitoring. Used in the educational process in the preparation of bachelors, undergraduates and graduate students.

The subject of this research is application of the principles and techniques of biofriendly design in various environmental situations – open urban and interior spaces. The relevance of this research is defined by the need for new paradigms and conceptual solutions in order to change the relationship between urbanized environment and nature. Biofriendly design is of particularly demand in the conditions of such global challenges to modern society as the 2020 pandemic, as it opens additional opportunities for sustainable development. The research methodology is based on the unity of theory and practice. The theoretical part of the work consists in consideration of the current state of the question, analysis of the key principles of biofriendly urbanism and techniques of biofriendly design. The practical part reviews the examples of projects of the open and interior spaces, in which biofriendliness is one of the fundamental principles of arranging the environment, and simultaneously, the space organization techniques. The empirical framework is comprised of such methods as observation and analysis of the results of creative works that allow assessing  the effectiveness of forms and methods of the development of creative component of professional activity. The research is conducted at the premises of the department of Design of Architectural Environment of the Pacific National University within the framework of educational course “Environmental Factors in Design” and is of applied nature. The novelty of this work consists in implementation of the obtained results in practical architectural and design engineering of environmental objects.

A pilot training project for Papua New Guinean journalists in New Zealand in 1974 ended as a failure. This led to a five-year New Zealand Government aid scheme to establish the South Pacific's first journalism school at the national University of Papua New Guinea in 1975. New Zealand journalist and broadcaster Ross Stevens was the founding lecturer and his legacy included Uni Tavur, the region's first independent newspaper produced by student journalists under an innovative ownership editing model. The UPNG programme educated a generation of journalists in Papua New Guinea and today PNG journalists have the higest level of tertiary education and training in the Pacific. The experience also had a profound impact on the traditions of free speech and journalism training for the rest of the Pacific region. This article examines the contribution made by the late Stevens and how the country's political pressures have impacted on his legacy.
