The objective of this paper has been to conceptually analyze Sustainable Development. In this sense, seven concepts were chosen, based on their similarities and differences, to interpret the nature-society relationship in terms of the equitable availability of resources between species and generations. The implementation of instrumental rationality assumes an optimization of resources and public services. Limited rationality reveals the irreversibility of pollution. An increase in practical awareness would accelerate the emission of waste from process innovations. The communicative rationality and the decision would reveal risks in the face of austerity. This conceptual analysis of Sustainable Development will allow us to glimpse theories, diagnoses and interventions to promote rational lifestyles favorable to the conservation of the environment.

This paper discusses two neomarxist theories of ecological crises - theory of metabolic rift and the second contradiction of capitalism theory. The goal of the paper is to present two critical theories and to confront them so similarities, differences, flaws and contributions of those theories can be identified. In the first part of the paper author classifies different approaches to ecological crisis and sustainable development in order to relate two neomarxist theories to other approaches to the topic. In the second part, author discusses theory of metabolic rift, which is a heuristic analysis of Marx?s original work. In other words, this theory represents a new reading of the classic and tries to integrate it?s new findings about envirnmental side of Marx?s thought into a contemporary marxist theory. Third part of the paper is reserved for the second contradiction of capitalism, a neomarxist theory of economic crisis which can be applied as a theory of ecological crisis. Two theories are then confronted after which similarities and differences between them are pointed out. The author concludes the paper by stressing out the flaws and scientific contributions of the two theories.

The literature suggests that first-movers enjoy sustainable competitive advantages but suffer some disadvantages. The timing of new product introduction is a major decision for executives who are concerned about sustainability issues. These executives must simultaneously strive for environmental protection, social welfare, the timing of product introduction, and the economic viability of decisions. However, few academic studies have examined how executives balance sustainable first-mover advantages and sustainable development goals in order to achieve sustainable organizational growth and performance. This study develops nine research hypotheses to examine what sustainable advantages first-movers gain by being first to market sustainable products in five industries that are important for advancing sustainable development goals. Using data collected from 1437 executives who are concerned about sustainability issues in seven countries, this study uses Duncan multiple-range tests to examine cross-national similarities and differences between Asian and Western countries. The study results reveal some interesting cross-national similarities and differences. The cross-national differences suggest some competing and signaling strategies for sustainable enterprise development. This study contributes to the existing cross-national research on first-mover advantages, provides a richer understanding of how executives who are concerned about sustainability issues perceive sustainability first-mover advantages and disadvantages, and further expands the theory of sustainable innovation and entrepreneurship.

Abstract A descriptive analysis of 416 documents was performed using bibliometric techniques, in order to gather existing knowledge in circular economy (CE) focusing on waste management (2007–2020). The results of this study indicate that annual scientific production increased 94% in the last five years; highlighting the countries of Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, China, Brazil and India. The conceptual analysis indicates strong linkage between CE and sustainable production, waste management and recycling. Emerging research trends evolved from processes and industry oriented approach (2017), towards waste management, recycling and circular economy (2019) and sustainable development and urban solid waste (2020). Through intellectual analysis, schools of thought were identified, where the most influential authors such as Wang, Ghisellini, Zhang and the European Commission with the greatest connection with other authors stand out. Results found denote the challenge represented by the implementation of comprehensive policies in CE, in addition to measure its contribution to sustainable development. The above, being a key alternative for green recovery in response to current COVID-19 pandemic.

The climate of increasing competitiveness between cities, leads to an urgent need for territorial actors to find solutions, so that cities become a more attractive space for different targets. Although cities are considered centers of innovation and social and economic development, their unplanned and unsustainable growth has resulted in harmful consequences for the environment, community, tourism, among others. This research aims to make a comparative analysis between the Strategic Plan for Sustainable Development of Cape Verde, the National Development Plan of São Tomé and Príncipe and the Proposal for the Sustainable Development Plan of the Autonomous Region of Príncipe, considering the theoretical contributions and the guidelines of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It concludes about the similarities and differences between the plans, both in terms of the depth of the elements analyzed, as well as in alignment with the Agenda 2030.

PurposeTo elaborate the nature of critique presented in the models and concepts of human information behaviour (HIB) research by identifying the issues to which the critique is directed and the ways in which the critique is conducted.Design/methodology/approachConceptual analysis focusing on 58 key studies on the topic. First, the objects and ways of conducting the critique were identified. Thereafter, three levels of depth at which the critique is conducted were specified. The conceptual analysis is based on the comparison of the similarities and differences between the articulations of critique presented at these levels.FindingsAt the lowest level of depth, critique of HIB research is directed to the lack of research by identifying gaps and complaining the neglect or paucity of studies in a significant domain. At the level of critiquing the shortcomings of existing studies, the attention is focused on the identification and analysis of the inadequacies of concepts and models. Finally, constructive critiques of research approaches dig deeper in that they not only identify weaknesses of existing studies but also propose alternative in which the shortcomings can be avoided, and the conceptualizations of HIB enhanced.Research limitations/implicationsAs the study focuses on critiques addressed to HIB models and concepts, the findings cannot be generalized to concern the field of Library and Information Science (LIS) as a whole. Moreover, due to the emphasis of the qualitative research approach, the findings offer only an indicative picture of the frequency of the objects critiqued in HIB research.Originality/valueThe study pioneers by providing an in-depth analysis of the nature of critiques presented in a LIS research domain.

Šiame straipsnyje analizuojama aplinkosaugos vadybos sistemų (EMAS ir ISO 14001), kaip darnaus vystymosi tikslų padedančių siekti aplinkosaugos priemonių, reikšmė, atskleidžiamas su jų įgyvendinimu susijusių reikalavimų turinys, šių sistemų panašumai ir pagrindiniai skirtumai, nagrinėjama, kokia yra reikalavimo taikyti aplinkosaugos vadybos priemones viešuosiuose pirkimuose reikšmė ir kokia tiekėjo kvalifikacija gali būti laikoma lygiavertė minėtoms dviem aplinkosaugos vadybos sistemoms, kad viešuoju pirkimu būtų pasiekti aplinkosaugos tikslai ir tiekėjas būtų pajėgus vykdydamas sutartį užtikrinti aplinkos apsaugą. This article analyzes the significance of environmental management schemes (EMAS and ISO 14001) as of the measures, assisting in achieving the aims of sustainable development, discloses the substance of the requirements, related to the implementation of such measures, the similarities and differences between these environmental management schemes. Similarly, the article examines the meaning of the selection criterion, used in public procurement, requiring suppliers to apply environmental management schemes or measures, and reveals the complexity of evaluation of equivalence of non formal environmental management measures to EMAS and ISO 14001, with the purpose to ensure that a supplier has a technical ability to carry out a public contract in an environmentally sound manner.

The International Model Forest Network (IMFN) was announced by Canada at the Rio (UNCED) Summit ten years ago to pilot outside of Canada a promising participatory field-level approach to sustainable forest management then being developed in Canada through its national model forest network. The IMFN has since grown from three sites in two countries (outside of Canada) in 1994 to 19 sites in 11 countries, in addition to numerous additional sites proposed and at early stages of development. Now with the successor event to Rio, the World Summit on Sustainable Development, about to take place in Johannesburg, South Africa, there is an appropriate milestone at which to pause and consider its evolution and growth. Among the elements of success attributed to the growth of the network the authors consider the nature of the approach itself as being an innovative re-formulation of widely shared management values, its flexibility across borders and ecosystems, and the support provided in its development by the Canadian Model Forest Network and other domestic and international partners. The article looks at similarities and differences between the international and Canadian applications of this approach and describes some of the lessons learned and difficulties met in applying the approach internationally. Key words: IMFNS, CMFN, International, Networking, Asia, Latin America

This paper explores the origin, concept, and basic content of Chinese Feng Shui (geomancy) and makes a comparison with sustainable development principles to explore similarities and differences in philosophic thinking from environmental, social, and economic perspectives. It also attempts to acquire inspiration from Feng Shui for achieving ecological balance and harmony between humans and nature. The long history of the Chinese Feng Shui culture has important implications for extending the contemporary sustainable development theory, and this study argues that it can inform policy aimed at achieving sustainability in a more harmonious way.
