This paper explores the origin, concept, and basic content of Chinese Feng Shui (geomancy) and makes a comparison with sustainable development principles to explore similarities and differences in philosophic thinking from environmental, social, and economic perspectives. It also attempts to acquire inspiration from Feng Shui for achieving ecological balance and harmony between humans and nature. The long history of the Chinese Feng Shui culture has important implications for extending the contemporary sustainable development theory, and this study argues that it can inform policy aimed at achieving sustainability in a more harmonious way.

Global challenges including overpopulation, climate change, and income inequality have increased, and a demand for sustainability has emerged. Decision-making for sustainable development is multifaceted and interlinked, owing to the diverse interests of different stakeholders and political conflicts. Analysing a situation from all social, political, environmental, and economic perspectives is necessary to achieve balanced growth and facilitate sustainable development. South Korea was among the poorest countries following the Korean War; however, it has developed rapidly since 1955. This growth was not limited to economic development alone, and the chronology of South Korean development may serve as a reference for development in other countries. Here, we explore the compressed growth of South Korea using a narrative approach and time-series, comparative, and spatial analyses. Developmental indicators, along with the modern history of South Korea, are introduced to explain the reasons for compressed growth. The development of the mid-latitude region comprising 46 countries in this study, where nearly half of Earth’s population resides, was compared with that of South Korea; results show that the developmental chronology of South Korea can serve as a reference for national development in this region.

The development is essentially a constructive effort to make a better life for everyone. Various development theories have been produced to make this happen. In the history of Indonesia, there was a Regent who inherited the developmental thoughts in the next generation. He was Prince Aria Soeria Atmadja or Prince of Mecca, Regent of Sumedang in the period of 1883-1919. He wrote his development ideas in the book “Di Tioeng Memeh Hoedjan”. The purpose of this article is to understand the developmental thoughts of Aria Soeria Atmadja. This research used the qualitative method with more emphasize on the hermeneutic approach, especially using hermeneutical circles. The result shows that the developmental thoughts of Aria Soeria Atmadja expressed in Sundanese with figurative language style because of the colonization. His thoughts were a formulation of his experience when he was in a government bureaucratic official. His developmental thoughts were in line with the Sustainable Development theory that developed in the 1980s and emphasized morality as its basis. He also emphasized the importance of community involvement in the development process

Sustainable development is among the foremost ideas that guide societal aspirations around the world. This book interrogates the concept through a critical lens, examining both its history and the trajectory of its manifestations in the Brazilian Amazon. The book argues that sustainable development is a concept that is better understood as involving embroilments and ongoing processes of contestation rather than a single end goal. The research offers historical analysis of Amazonian development from the colonial era into the discourse and praxis of sustainable development in contemporary times, and then illustrates the tensions of sustainable development plans that are experienced by people living in the areas geographically the closest to where those plans are being implemented. The history of the Brazilian Amazon is introduced to readers through focused discussions on the tensions between making grand plans for the region and the everyday practices and experiences of sustainable development, which involve considerably more muddling. Case studies explore agrarian reform initiatives that occur alongside road paving projects, the creation of extractive reserves and conservation areas that follow in the wake of assassinations, and the construction of a massive hydroelectric dam. While Amazonian sustainable development is a widely-accepted imperative, the research presented here shows how land use and infrastructure plans conducted in the name of sustainable development often perpetuate and reinforce economic and political inequalities.

This paper discusses two neomarxist theories of ecological crises - theory of metabolic rift and the second contradiction of capitalism theory. The goal of the paper is to present two critical theories and to confront them so similarities, differences, flaws and contributions of those theories can be identified. In the first part of the paper author classifies different approaches to ecological crisis and sustainable development in order to relate two neomarxist theories to other approaches to the topic. In the second part, author discusses theory of metabolic rift, which is a heuristic analysis of Marx?s original work. In other words, this theory represents a new reading of the classic and tries to integrate it?s new findings about envirnmental side of Marx?s thought into a contemporary marxist theory. Third part of the paper is reserved for the second contradiction of capitalism, a neomarxist theory of economic crisis which can be applied as a theory of ecological crisis. Two theories are then confronted after which similarities and differences between them are pointed out. The author concludes the paper by stressing out the flaws and scientific contributions of the two theories.

Social studies have many variations because society is not a single object. Social change is a phenomenon of community construction that has a variety of variations. Development is a word used to describe processes and efforts to enhance economic, political, cultural, social, and so on. With such an understanding "development" is aligned with the word "social change." Along with development theory there are other social change theories such as socialism, dependensia, or other theories. Therefore, many people call developmental theory as developmentism. Thus such theories reject theories, such as the theory of community-based development, or even sustainable development and are alternatives to developmentism, but other variations of the ideology of developmentism.
