Common bean is among the major crops grown in southern Ethiopia including Borana zone where the majority of the farmers are Agro-pastoralist and produce the crop mainly for home consumption. The area has potential to the production of common bean for food and nutrition security as well as export commodity. However, scarcity of varieties that fit to the environment is one of the major constraints of production. Therefore, this experiment was conducted to evaluate 36 common bean genotypes including seven released varieties to evaluate performance of genotypes for yield and agronomic traits. The field experiment was conducted in 2015 at two locations (Abaya and Yabello) and genotypes were planted in triple lattice design. Data were collected on yield and important agronomic traits. Analysis of variance computed for individual locations and combined analysis over locations revealed significant variations among genotypes for all traits. Moreover, 16.67% of the genotypes had mean grain yield greater than the best performing released variety across locations and the genotypes showed a grain yield as high as 3.25 tons ha-1. Based on results of this study it is recommended to test the high yielding and early maturing genotypes at many locations to develop preferred varieties across many locations.

Locally grown crops with phytochemical antioxidant content i.e. goroho plantain and yellow pumpkin were used to develop composite flour. Mixture experiment with simplex lattice design was used for formulation to study the effect of blending goroho plantain flour (GF) with yellow pumpkin flour (PF) on phytochemical content and antioxidant capacity of developed composite flours. Responses measured including phytochemical content (total phenolic and carotenoid), antioxidant capacity (DPPH assay, FRAP assay, phosphomolybdenum assay, and reducing power assay), colour values of flours, proximate components, and sensory quality of biscuits made from composite flours. The results showed that increase in proportion of PF improved the phytochemical content, antioxidant capacity, and proximate components with the exception of carbohydrates. However, substitution of GF with PF reduced sensory ratings for all the sensory attributes of biscuits developed from composite flours. Among biscuits made from composite flours, sensory ratings for aroma, colour, texture, and taste were not statistically different (p>0.05). PF can be used as fortification material to improve the phytochemical antioxidant content in composite flours prepared from GF and PF, or flours from other locally grown plants.

Missing data often occur in agriculture and animal husbandry experiment. The missing data in experimental design makes the information that we get less complete. In this research, the missing data was estimated with Yates method and Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm. The basic concept of the Yates method is to minimize sum square error (JKG), meanwhile the basic concept of the EM algorithm is to maximize the likelihood function. This research applied Balanced Lattice Design with 9 treatments, 4 replications and 3 group of each repetition. Missing data estimation results showed that the Yates method was better used for two of missing data in the position on a treatment, a column and random, meanwhile the EM algorithm was better used to estimate one of missing data and two of missing data in the position of a group and a replication. The comparison of the result JKG of ANOVA showed that JKG of incomplete data larger than JKG of incomplete data that has been added with estimator of data. This suggest  thatwe need to estimate the missing data.

This paper aims to improve the energy absorption performance of stiffness-optimized lattice structures by utilizing a multi-objective surrogate-based size optimization that considers the additive manufacturing (AM) constraints such as the minimum printable size. A truss optimization is first utilized at the unit cell level under static compressive loads for stiffness maximization and two optimized lattice configurations called the Face-Body Centered Cubic (FBCC) lattice and the Octet Cubic (OC) are obtained. A multi-objective size optimization process is then carried out to improve the energy absorption capabilities of those lattice designs using non-linear compression simulations with Nylon12 material to be fabricated by the Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) AM process. Thin plate spline (TPS) interpolation method is found to produce very high accuracy as the surrogate model to predict the highly nonlinear response surfaces of energy absorption objectives in the optimization. Compared to the lattice designs with uniform strut diameters, by using the optimization process, the maximum energy absorption efficiency ( EAEm) and the crush stress efficiency ( CSE) of the OC lattice design are further improved up to 33% and 37%, respectively. The FBCC lattice design is also found to have superior EAEm performance compared to the existing lattice types considered for fabricating by the MJF process in the literature.
