Pollen characterization of ornamental species of Mammillaria Haw. (Cactaceae/Cactoideae)

The pollen morphology of thirteen species of Cactaceae was studied: M. backebergiana F.G. Buchenau, M. decipiens Scheidw, M. elongata DC, M. gracilis Pfeiff., M. hahniana Werderm., M. marksiana Krainz, M. matudae Bravo, M. nejapensis R.T. Craig & E.Y. Dawson, M. nivosa Link ex Pfeiff., M. plumosa F.A.C. Weber, M. prolifera (Mill.) Haw, M. spinosissima var. “A Peak” Lem. and M. voburnensis Scheer. All analysed pollen grains are monads, with radial symmetry, medium size (M. gracilis, M. marksiana, M. prolifera, large), tricolpates (dimorphs in M. plumosa [3-6 colpus] and M. prolifera [3-6 colpus]), with circular-subcircular amb (quadrangular in M. prolifera and M. plumosa with six colpus). The pollen grains presented differences in relation to the shape and exine thickness. The exine was microechinate and microperforated. The pollen morphological data are unpublished and will aid in studies that use pollen samples. These pollen grains indicate ornamental cacti.

Aiming to contribute with elements about the reproduction of the reophytes Raulinoa echinata, Dyckia brevifolia and Dyckia ibiramensis as well as to support their taxonomic definition,  their pollinic characterization was carried out. Fresh pollen grains were prepared by acetolysis. Observations occurred on a light microscope and a scanning electron microscope. Measures were done of the polar (P) and equatorial diameters (E) and thickness of the exine and are expressed as means in micrometers. R. echinata: monad; radial symmetry; medium size; P=49,07±3,33; E=33,95±3,94; prolate (ratio P / E); ambitus subtriangular; 3-aperturated with long colpi and lalongate endoapertures; exine striated with  thickness 1.54 ± 0,32. Dyckia brevifolia: monad; bilateral symmetry; medium size; P=25,16 ± 3,02; E=43,16±3,50 x 28,12±3,26; ambitus elliptical; monoaperturated with one long sulcus; exine reticulate with thickness 1,66 ± 0,31. D. ibiramensis: monad; bilateral symmetry; medium size; P=29,54±3,17; E=42,36±3,60 x 28,43±3,38; ambitus elliptical; monoaperturated with one long sulcus; exine reticulate with thickness 1,73 ± 0,28. Data obtained can allow to verify hydrophily for the three species as well as suggest Raulinoa proximity with Metrodorea and Esenbeckia (both Pilocarpinae) and confirm D. brevifolia e D. ibiramensis to Pitcairnioideae.

The pollen morphology and exine structure of 17 species of Lippia L. were investigated in this work using light and scanning electron microscopy. Among the species studied, 14 showed tricolporate pollen grains, two had tri- and tetracolporate pollen grains and a single species exhibited, only tetracolporate pollen. The amb ranged from triangular to square, and the shape varied from oblate-spheroidal to prolate-spheroidal. Three different types of exine ornamentation were observed: psilate, scabrate and perforate. In addition to morphological data, we found positive association between the chromosome numbers and size of pollen grains, and also between the length and width of the colpi. The results indicate that the characteristics of pollen grains in Lippia may be used as an additional taxonomic character of the genus.

This study aimed to characterize species of Myrtaceae belonging to genera already identified in the pollen spectrum of beehive products of social bees, describing pollen grains morphology and correlating with taxonomic differences the species reported in the literature. For each plant species, measurements were made with 25 pollen grains in equatorial view and the polar diameter (PD) and equatorial diameter (ED) were measured. The exine thickness was obtained by measuring 10 pollen grains in polar view at the medium height of mesocolpium. The description of pollen morphology showed that pollen grains of the species are triangular amb, 3-colporates, psilate surface, small to medium size and oblate shape with the P/E ratio ranging from 0.52 to 0.72 µm. The morphological description of Myrtaceae species showed similarity between several characteristics common to pollen grains of this species. The description also allowed separation of nine species studied by size and specific morphological characters with the identification key, which can also be used to study the pollen spectrum of hive products.

Español.  San Miguel de Tucumán posee vegetación ornamental de carácter exótico y autóctono distribuída en calles y plazas. Con el objeto de facilitar la identificación de los granos de polen presentes tanto en sedimentos melíferos como en muestreos aerobiológicos locales, el presente trabajo continúa la descripción de la morfología polínica de la flora ornamental de esta ciudad. Se analizaron 10 especies arbóreas y arbustivas: Brachychiton populneus (Schott & Endl.) R. Br. (Malvaceae); Caesalpinia gilliesii (Wall. ex Hook.) D. Dietr. (Fabaceae); Campsis radicans (L) Bureau (Bignoniaceae); Euphorbia milii Des Moul. (Euphorbiaceae); Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L.; H. rosa-sinensis L. var. schizopetalus Boulger, H. mutabilis L., (Malvaceae); Hydrangea macrophylla (Thunb.) Ser. (Hydrangeaceae); Jacaranda mimosifolia D. Don (Bignoniaceae) y Ligustrum lucidum W.T. Aiton (Oleaceae). Las muestras provienen de material fresco y fueron procesadas según las técnicas convencionales de acetólisis y polen natural. Las preparaciones microscópicas fueron incorporadas a la Palinoteca (PAL-TUC) de la Fundación Miguel Lillo (FML). Se tomaron fotos con MO y MEB. Las descripciones polínicas amplían estudios previos realizados por diversos autores excepto en Hydrangea macrophylla y Jacaranda mimosifolia, de los que no encontramos referencias sobre morfología polínica en trabajos anteriores. De las especies estudiadas Ligustrum lucidum ha sido registrado en muestreos aerobiológicos. Brachychiton populneus, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis var. schizopetalus y Euphorbia milii se han encontrado en muestras melisopalinológicas.Inglés. San Miguel de Tucumán has ornamental vegetation of exotic and indigenous character distributed in streets and squares. In order to facilitate identification of pollen grains present in melliferous sediments and aerobiological sampling, this study continues the description of the pollen morphology of the ornamental flora of this city. For the study, 10 arboreal and shrubby species were analyzed: Brachychiton populneus (Schott & Endl.) R. Br. (Malvaceae); Caesalpinia gilliesii (Wall. ex Hook.) D. Dietr. (Fabaceae); Campsis radicans (L) Bureau (Bignoniaceae); Euphorbia milii Des Moul. (Euphorbiaceae); Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L., H. rosa-sinensis L. var. schizopetalus Boulger, H. mutabilis L., (Malvaceae); Hydrangea macrophylla (Thunb.) Ser. (Hydrangeaceae); Jacaranda mimosifolia D. Don (Bignoniaceae); Ligustrum lucidum W.T. Aiton (Oleaceae). Samples obtained from fresh material were processed by conventional techniques of acetolysis and natural pollen. The microscopic preparations were incorporated into the Palinoteca (PAL-TUC) of the Fundación Miguel Lillo (FML). Pictures were taken with OM (optical microscope) and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope). The pollen descriptions of this work extend previous studies made by various authors except in Hydrangea macrophylla and Jacaranda mimosifolia, of which no references on pollen morphology were found in previous works. Among the species studied, Ligustrum lucidum, was found in aero biological samples; whereas Brachychiton populneus, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, H. rosa-sinensis. var. schizopetalus and Euphorbia milii were found in melisopalinological samples.

ABSTRACT Flowers with heterodynamous stamens can present differences in the pollen grains of each stamen size group. Species of Aeschynomene L. present didynamous stamens (five long and five short) but little is known about their pollen dimorphism. The objective of this study was to increase the knowledge about the pollen characteristics in Aeschynomene and emphasize the possible morphological differences between the pollen grains of long and short stamens in order to contribute to ecological and taxonomic studies. Pollen grains from the two groups of stamens size of ten species were analyzed separately, according to the standard methodology for studies of pollen morphology. In addition, analyses of variance, comparison of means and base index were performed. The results showed that the amb, shape, endoaperture type and sexine ornamentation did not vary in the pollen grains of the long and short stamens in the same specimen, but they varied among the species. However, in relation to the size of the pollen grains of the two groups of stamens, four species presented significant differences regarding the size of the polar and equatorial axes. The pollen morphological data obtained considering the heteromorphism of the stamens can contribute to the knowledge of the repro ductive dynamics of the genus, and to the systematic studies.

This paper presents the results of the study on pollen morphology of five Polish species of the genus <em>Sorbus</em> L. (<em>S. aria</em> (L.) Crantz, <em>S. aucuparia</em> L. Emend. Hedl., <em>S. chamaemespilus</em> (L.) Crantz, <em>S. intermedia</em> (Ehrh.) Pers. and <em>S. torminalis</em> (L.) Crantz). Observations were carried out with light and scanning microscopes. Investigated pollen grains were small or medium size, most often subprolate or prolate spheroidal in outline. Exine of medium thickness, consisted of two layers. Mainly 3-zonocolporate or sometimes 4-zonocolporate (<em>S. chamaemespilus</em> and <em>S. torminalis</em>) grains were noted. Usually striatae type of sculpture was observed, except the grains of <em>S. intermedia</em>, which were characterized by intermediate type of sculpture, with the features both striate and regulate ornamentation. Pollen morphology of the investigated <em>Sorbus</em> species corresponds with their systematic classification. It is relatively easy to separate pollen grains of the following subgenera: <em>Sorbus</em>, <em>Chamaemespilus</em> and <em>Torminaria</em>. Only subgenus <em>Aria</em> includes grains of different morphology and therefore it is impossible to determine the diagnostic features of this subgenus. Pollen morphology does not confirm a close relationship between <em>S. aria</em> and <em>S. intermedia</em>. It is possible to distinguished pollen grains of all the analysed native species. However, there are no important differences in pollen morphology between the subspecies of <em>Sorbus aucuparia</em>. The key for Polish <em>Sorbus</em> species, based on pollen grain characters is given too.

AbstractTaraxacum pieninicum Pawł. (Asteraceae) is an endemic species, growing only in Pieniny Mts. The aim of the presented work was to investigate its pollen morphology as well as its ultrastructural traits of achene pericarp. Pollen grains of this species were of medium size, echino-lophate and 3-zonocolporate. The external surface of the achene body was of scale sculpture, covered with the spikes. Pappus hairs were not branched, built of a few tubular cells, with acute, protruding ends.

The polleniferous material of Centaurea taxa grow in Kurdistan-Iraq was collected. Samples were tested using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy (LM). In the polar view, pollen grain outlines are mostly triangular or triangular-circular. In equatorial view, the elliptic shape is common, while circulars or semicircular shapes are rare. The exine sculpture is scabrate, and the tectum is perforate. Number of sculpture microspinules/ µm², and their heights together with the number of wall perforations provide significant characters for taxa delimitation. Pollen grains of all species are of medium size, very few of some species pollen are larger or smaller in size. Species producing subprolate pollen shape is common, while oblate spheroidal and Prolate spheroidal shapes are less common. The principal component analysis and the discriminant analysis can recognize 65.478% and 87.54% of the total variability respectively; moreover, the discriminant function can correctly classify 125 or 78.125% out of 160 observations for pollen traits.

ABSTRACT: In this presented work, the pollen morphologies of twenty-one taxa, nine of them endemic from Turkey, belonging to the genus Salvia (Lamiaceae: sub-family Nepetoideae: tribe Mentheae: sub-tribe Salviinae), S. aethiopis L., S. argentea L., S. aytachii Vural & Adigüzel, S. blepharochlaena Hedge & Hub.-Mor., S. cadmica Boiss., S. ceratophylla L., S. cryptantha Montbret & Aucher, S. frigida Boiss., S. fructicosa Miller, S. halophile Hedge, S. napifolia Jacq., S. microstegia Boiss. & Bal., S. recognita Fisch. & Mey. S. sclarea L., S. smyrnaea Boiss. S. suffruticosa Montbret & Aucher, S. tchihatcheffii (Fisch. & Mey.) Boiss., S. tometosa Bertol, S. verbenaca L., S. viridis L., and S. wiedemanni Boiss. and collected throughout the Turkey, have been intensively studied by using light (LM) and a scanning electron (SEM) microscopy. The objectives of this study are to investigate the pollen morphologies of twenty-one taxa of Turkish Salvia (nine of which are endemic) and to present similar and different characteristics of the taxa. The investigated whole pollen grains had a structure of both isopolar and radial symmetry. Overall, types of aperture were mostly hexacolpate, but it was also determined that the aperture type of S. viridis was both hexacolpate and octacolpate. The pollen grains had characteristic shapes of spheroidal, suboblate, prolate and subprolate. The exine ornamentation was bireticulate and reticulate-perforate. It was determined by the results of palynological studies that pollen morphology changed amongst these studied taxa. As a conclusion, the results of the present study show that palynological characters such as pollen shape, polar axis length (P), equatorial axis length (E), aperture numbers and types and exine ornamentation, exhibit remarkable differences amongst the studied taxa.

Abstract. Sudarmono. 2018. Short Communication: Pollen diversity in the Bogor Botanic Gardens, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 931-936. Pollen morphology influenced the process of plants evolution. Bogor Botanic Gardens has many living collections in terms of pollen diversity. The purpose of this study was observed at the diversity of pollen morphology at the Bogor Botanic Gardens and its implications for the pollen conservation of plants in the collection. The method used is cleaning the pollen using Glacial Acetic Acid (AAG), then examined using a light microscope in the tissue culture laboratory of Bogor Botanic Gardens. There were 35 specimens that were analyzed and the results were randomly shaped pollen from radial symmetry or bilateral symmetry to its combination with monocolpate, tricolpate, pericolpate and stephanocolpate. While aperture types were the monoporate type with 5 specimens, monocolpate 10 specimens, tricolpate 11 specimens, stephanocolpate 4 specimens, periporate 4 specimens, and syncolpate 1 specimen. Three specimens families Caesalpiniaceae (order Fabales) has the shape of pollen vary, i.e radial symmetry monocolpate and radial symmetry tricolpate. Similarly, two specimens of the family Araliaceae (Apiales) different shapes, namely radial symmetry and bilateral symmetry tricolpate. In Asteraceae and Asclepiadaceae has the same shape, the radial symmetry tricolpate. Overall of 35 specimens then there are 22 specimens of radial symmetry and 13 specimens of bilateral symmetry. For the same family have the same ornamentation, for example in the Lamiaceae, Malvaceae, and Rutaceae. But the uniqueness occurs in the family of Arecaceae or palm family that show the diversity in the shape and size of pollen in each genus. Pollen morphology analysis through a combination of morphological data, palynology, and molecular samples more would be better. Pollen bank as pollen in the living collections of Bogor Botanic Gardens is needed to germplasm conservation of endangered plants in Indonesia.
