Lipids as early and minimally invasive biomarkers for Alzheimer disease

: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disorder worldwide. Specifically, typical late-onset AD is a sporadic form with a complex etiology that affects over 90% of patients. The current gold standard for AD diagnosis is based on the determination of amyloid status by the analysis of cerebrospinal fluid samples or by brain positron emission tomography. These procedures have some disadvantages to become widely used (expensive, invasive). As alternative, blood metabolites have recently emerged as promising AD biomarkers. Small molecules that cross the compromised AD blood-brain barrier, could be determined in plasma to improve clinical AD diagnosis at early stages through minimally invasive techniques. Specifically, lipids could play an important role in AD since brain has a high lipid content and they are present ubiquitously inside amyloid plaques. Therefore, a systematic review was performed with the aim of identifying blood lipid metabolites as potential early AD biomarkers. In conclusion, some lipid families (fatty acids, glycerolipids, glycerophospholipids, sphingolipids, lipid peroxidation compounds) showed impaired levels at early AD stages. Ceramide levels were significantly higher in AD subjects and polyunsaturated fatty acids levels were significantly lower in AD. Also, high arachidonic acid levels were found in AD patients in contrast to low sphingomyelin levels. Consequently, these lipid biomarkers could be used for minimally invasive and early AD clinical diagnosis.

Esophageal cancer is the sixth leading cause of death from cancer worldwide. Esophageal resection is the mainstay treatment for cancers of the esophagus. While curative, surgical resection may result in swallowing difficulties that require intervention from speech-language pathologists (SLPs). Minimally invasive surgical procedures for esophageal resection have aimed to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with more invasive techniques. Both intra-operative and post-operative complications, regardless of the surgical approach, can result in dysphagia. This article will review the epidemiological impact of esophageal cancers, operative complications resulting in dysphagia, and clinical assessment and management of dysphagia pertinent to esophageal resection.

Gummy smile is a characteristic in which the patient exposes more than 2 mm of keratinized gingiva in forced smile. With a multifactorial cause, its correct planning depends directly on the correct diagnosis. Usually, the procedures that involve manipulation and the enlargement of the aesthetical crown lengthening are surgical. The objective of this case series was to show the advantages of surgical crown augmentation surgery in aesthetic areas with minimally invasive techniques. Three cases of gummy smile were presented, with different treatment plans and techniques for execution. In the 3 cases, bone removal was performed with piezoelectric ultrasound, which made the postoperative more comfortable for patients. These cases illustrate the use of technology to reduce morbidity in patients who need to undergo bone removal to treat gingival smile.

Background:: Nuts have been incorporated into guidelines for healthy eating since they contain considerable amounts of antioxidants and their effects are related to health benefits since they contribute to the prevention of nutritional deficiencies. The micronutrient characterization is based mainly on the determination of phenolics which is the most abundant class of bioactive compounds in nuts. Terpenes constitute another class of bioactive compounds that are present in nuts and show high volatility. The analysis of phenolic compounds and terpenes are very demanding tasks that require optimization of the chromatographic conditions to improve the separation of the components. Moreover, nuts are rich in unsaturated fatty acids and they are therefore considered as cardioprotective. Gas chromatography is the predominant instrumental analytical technique for the determination of derivatized fatty acids and terpenes in food matrices, while high performance liquid chromatography is currently the most popular technique for the determination of phenolic compounds Objective:: This review summarizes all the recent advances in the optimization of the chromatographic conditions for the determination of phenolic compounds, fatty acids and terpenes in nuts Conclusion:: The state-of-the art in the technology available is critically discussed, exploring new analytical approaches to reduce the time of analysis and improve the performance of the chromatographic systems in terms of precision, reproducibility, limits of detection and quantification and overall quality of the results
