The use of extreme weight-control behaviors is prevalent among adolescent athletes and may result from individual and sport-specific factors. Weight-related maltreatment from coaches and parents, and conformity to sport ethic norms have recently been linked to the use of extreme weight-control behaviors. This study aims to investigate the role of sport ethic norms and weight-related maltreatment from coaches and parents in the use of extreme weight-control behaviors among adolescent athletes. A sample of 999 French-Canadian athletes aged 14–17 years competing in a variety of sports completed an online survey assessing extreme weight-control behaviors, weight-related maltreatment from coaches and parents, and conformity to sport ethic norms. A total of 16.9% of the adolescent athletes reported having adopted extreme weight-control behaviors during their athletic careers. Extreme weight-control behaviors were significantly more prevalent among girls (19.75% vs 9.7% in boys) and weight-class-sport athletes (44%). In addition, 7.4% of the sample experienced at least one type of weight-related maltreatment by coaches or parents. Sex, weight-related neglect by coaches and parents, and weight-related psychological violence by coaches explained 24.4% of extreme weight-control behaviors variance. Indeed, participants who engaged in extreme weight-control behaviors experienced significantly more violence than the other participants did. In contrast, no differences were observed between people who engaged in extreme weight-control behaviors and those who did not due to conformity to sport ethic norms.

AbstractObjectiveTo evaluate the awareness and knowledge about weight status and its management.DesignA 1 d cross-sectional survey. Basic anthropometric assessments (weight, height, BMI and waist circumference) and a self-administered questionnaire were considered.SettingNineteen Clinical Nutrition or Endocrinology and Metabolic Disorders Units or Dietetics Services in the Italian region of Lombardy.SubjectsAll adults attending the ‘Obesity Day’ initiative.ResultsA total of 914 participants (605 female and 309 male) were recruited. Although most of the participants (83·5 %) considered obesity to be a disease, 38·5 % were likely to misperceive their weight status. In particular, 38·8 % of normal-weight adults believed themselves to be overweight, whereas 71·1 % and 37·5 % of classes I and II/III obese adults classified themselves as being overweight and mildly obese, respectively. However, most of the overweight (90·2 %), mildly (96·8 %) and moderately/severely obese adults (99·1 %) recognized the need to lose weight. In all, 37·8 % of the sample underestimated the role of physical activity in weight management. Interestingly, only 17·2 % of dieters (previous or current) declared being advised by their doctor to lose weight. Multivariate models revealed that higher age, low education and higher BMI were important determinants of poor weight control and management. In addition, previous dieting appeared not to provide better knowledge, whereas the role of physical activity was recognized mainly by those practising it.ConclusionsThe present study suggests that in Italy knowledge about weight management should be improved not only in the general population but also among health-care professionals. To confirm this finding, there is now the rationale for a nationally representative survey. New educational programmes can be designed on the basis of the information collected.

Cellular hypertrophy is regulated by coordinated pro- and antigrowth machineries. Foxo transcription factors initiate an atrophy-related gene program to counter hypertrophic growth. This study was designed to evaluate the role of Akt, the forkhead transcription factor Foxo3a, and atrophy genes muscle-specific RING finger (MuRF)-1 and atrogin-1 in cardiac hypertrophy and contractile dysfunction associated with high-fat diet-induced obesity. Mice were fed a low- or high-fat diet for 6 mo along with a food-restricted high-fat weight control group. Echocardiography revealed decreased fractional shortening and increased end-systolic diameter and cardiac hypertrophy in high-fat obese but not in weight control mice. Cardiomyocytes from high-fat obese but not from weight control mice displayed contractile and intracellular Ca2+ defects including depressed maximal velocity of shortening/relengthening, prolonged duration of shortening/relengthening, and reduced intracellular Ca2+ rise and clearance. Caspase activities were greater in high-fat obese but not in weight control mouse hearts. Western blot analysis revealed enhanced basal Akt and Foxo3a phosphorylation and reduced insulin-stimulated phosphorylation of Akt and Foxo3a without changes in total protein expression of Akt and Foxo3a in high-fat obese hearts. RT-PCR and immunoblotting results displayed reduced levels of the atrogens atrogin-1 and MuRF-1, the upregulated hypertrophic markers GATA4 and ciliary neurotrophic factor receptor-α, as well as the unchanged calcineurin and proteasome ubiquitin in high-fat obese mouse hearts. Transfection of H9C2 myoblast cells with dominant-negative Foxo3a adenovirus mimicked palmitic acid (0.8 mM for 24 h)-induced GATA4 upregulation without an additive effect. Dominant-negative Foxo3a-induced upregulation of pAkt and repression of phosphatase and tensin homologue were abrogated by palmitic acid. These results suggest a cardiac hypertrophic response in high-fat diet-associated obesity at least in part through inactivation of Foxo3a by the Akt pathway.
