scholarly journals A Nonlinear Cable Bracing Inerter System for Vibration Control

Abstract. This study proposes a nonlinear cable model for the cable-bracing inerter system (CBIS). In a CBIS, cables are introduced to connect inerter systems and the structure for translation-to-rotation conversion. This CBIS employs an inerter element, a nonlinear cable bracing element and an additional damping element to utilize their synergy benefits. This paper aims to investigate the control effect of the nonlinear CBIS for high-rise buildings that are represented as bending-shear type models. First, a nonlinear inerter system is incorporated into a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system and the mechanical model is proposed. An optimum design method is then developed for a high-rise building system equipped with a CBIS and the time-history analyses are conducted to validate the control effect of the CBIS. It is concluded that the employment of a CBIS can substantially improve the structural performance. A genetic algorithm can be used to obtain optimal parameters of a CBIS, thereby more effectively reducing the dynamic response of high-rise buildings.

A performance evaluation method of high-rise buildings is presented, by means of capacity spectra method which allows for higher mode effects. The multi-degree-of-freedom system (MDOF) of each mode is transformed into equivalent single-degree-of-freedom (ESDOF) system, and the ESDOF system is supposed to be elastic perfectly plastic. In elastic range, the equivalent displacement of ESDOF system for each mode is deduced by displacement response spectra based on the natural period, and the structural lateral elastic displacement of each mode could be determined by the corresponding equivalent displacement and mode shape. In inelastic range, according to capacity spectra method, the relationships among demand curve, capacity curve and ductility coefficient are built. The structural performance under moderate or major earthquake is determined by iteration method. The paper illustrates the application of the proposed procedure with an example and attempts to prove its feasibility by nonlinear time-history analysis.

Diagrid tube structures have advantages on constructing high-rise buildings for its great lateral stiffness, but its seismic design methodology researches are limited. The two-stage design method in Chinese code is not specific enough for the seismic fortification objectives of this kind of structures. It is necessary to propose some specific seismic performance objectives for the key components. Typical CFST diagrid tube-concrete core tube structures are studied by dynamic elastic-plastic time-history analysis using Perform-3D program. The structure plasticity developing process is summarized and the distribution characteristics of seismic fortification lines between tubes are discussed. The influences of main structure lateral stiffness related factors on the plasticity developing process are researched. The key components of structure lateral stiffness and plastic energy dissipation are studied. The seismic performance objectives of the key components are proposed for the three-level seismic fortification objectives.

A magnetic levitation (maglev) system is inherently nonlinear and open-loop unstable because of the nature of magnetic force. Most controllers for maglev systems are designed based on a nominal linearized model. System variations and uncertainties are not accommodated. The controllers are generally designed to satisfy gain and phase margin specifications, which may not guarantee a bound on the sensitivity. To address these issues, this paper proposes a robust control design method based on Quantitative Feedback Theory (QFT) applied to a single degree-of-freedom (DOF) maglev system. The controller is designed to successfully meet the stability requirement, robustness specifications, and bounds on the sensitivity. Experiments verify that the controller maintains stable levitation even with 100% load variation. Experiments prove that it guarantees the transient response design requirements even with 100% load change and 39% model uncertainties. The QFT control design method discussed in this paper can be applied to other open-loop unstable systems as well as systems with large uncertainties and variations to improve system robustness.

This article introduces the basic principles of four kinds of inerters applied for structural vibration control including a traditional inertial mass damper and ideal clutch inerter damper. The clutch inerter damper with all damping (clutch inerter damper_all damped) and clutch inerter damper with partial damping (clutch inerter damper_part damped) are distinguished in detail. First, a series of energy indexes are defined for further analysis. Second, the control effect of displacement for the uncontrolled structure and the four inerter-based single-degree-of-freedom systems are compared. Finally, considering the total input energy ( E1) and the invalid damping energy ( ECID_ric) as the effective indexes, combined with a large number of numerical simulation results, the variation rules of the two energy indexes with respect to two key parameters (inertia mass ratio and additional damping) are summarized, and the optimal parameters are proposed. The effectiveness of the optimal value is verified by displacement comparison.

In order to find the general condition of the rigid origami pattern for the deployable prismatic structures, the kinematic model is proposed based on the mobile assemblies of spherical 4R linkages. The kinematic and geometric compatibility conditions of the mobile assemblies are derived. Two groups of 2n-side deployable prismatic structures are obtained. When n=2, one of them is with kite-shape intersection, while the other is with parallelgram. The variations of the unit are discussed. The straight and curvy multilayer prisms are built by changing the dihedral angles between the intersecting planes. The general design method for the 2n-side multilayer deployable prismatic structures is proposed with the geometric condition of the origami patterns. All the deployable structures constructed with this method can be deployed and folded along the central axis of the prisms with single degree of freedom, which makes the structures have wide engineering applications.

A stochastic equivalent linearization technique combined with a ground response spectrum approach is proposed to approximate the inelastic response of base-isolated structures. These structures are modeled by nonlinear oscillators with a single degree of freedom. The main advantage of the proposed methodology is the fast calculation of approximate results in comparison with the slow, but more accurate time history analyses. The Bouc-Wen constitutive model is used to represent the inelastic behavior of the isolators. The equations of motion are linearized by an iterative stochastic technique involving the a-priori unknown response statistics. At each iteration step, the modal contributions from one real and one pair of complex conjugate modes are combined by a response spectrum approach to obtain the maximum responses of interest. The process requires the use of conventional spectra (pseudo-acceleration and relative velocity) as well as the relative displacement spectrum of a massless oscillator. Floor response spectrum results above the isolators are calculated by the proposed approach and are compared against the results obtained by a simulation involving time history analyses.

Numerous studies have been conducted for magneto-rheological dampers, but the application of magneto-rheological dampers in seismic design is limited due to the lack of a systematical design procedure. In this article, a simplified analysis procedure is proposed to estimate the response of a single-degree-of-freedom structure with diagonal bracing and a magneto-rheological damper without performing the time history analysis. The proposed simplified analysis procedure is based on the equivalent linear system of a magneto-rheological damper. The equivalent damping ratio and the effective period of the single-degree-of-freedom system are determined from the loss factor and the effective stiffness of the magneto-rheological damper based on the quasi-static model. Design response spectrum is utilized to calculate the displacement of the single-degree-of-freedom system. The equivalent damping ratio and the effective stiffness of the single-degree-of-freedom system are dependent on the displacement of the system; thus, the proposed procedure is iterated until the displacement from the design response spectrum converges. The accuracy of the simplified analysis procedure is evaluated by comparing the estimated response from this procedure with the response from the time history analysis. The results show a good agreement between two methods, demonstrating the robustness of the proposed simplified analysis procedure.

This paper presents a new theoretical approach to the dynamic contact behavior and tracking characteristics of a contact slider that is one of the candidates of head design for future high density magnetic recording disk storages. A slider and its suspension are modeled as a single-degree-of-freedom vibration system. The disk surface is assumed to have a harmonic wavy roughness with linear contact stiffness and damping. From the computer simulation of the time history of the slider motion after dropping from the initial height of 10 nm, it is found that the contact vibration of the slider can attenuate and finally track on the wavy disk surface in a low waviness frequency range. As the waviness frequency increases, however, the slider cannot stay on the disk surface and comes to exhibit a variety of contact vibrations, such as sub- and super-harmonic resonance responses and finally comes to exhibit non-periodic vibration. It is also found that, among design parameters, the slider load to mass ratio and contact damping can greatly increase the surface waviness frequency and amplitude for which the stable tracking of a contact slider is possible.

Rigid origami inspires new design technology in deployable structures with large deployable ratio due to the property of flat foldability. In this paper, we present a general kinematic model of rigid origami pattern and obtain a family of deployable prismatic structures. Basically, a four-crease vertex rigid origami pattern can be presented as a spherical 4R linkage, and the multivertex patterns are the assemblies of spherical linkages. Thus, this prismatic origami structure is modeled as a closed loop of spherical 4R linkages, which includes all the possible prismatic deployable structures consisting of quadrilateral facets and four-crease vertices. By solving the compatibility of the kinematic model, a new group of 2n-sided deployable prismatic structures with plane symmetric intersections is derived with multilayer, straight and curvy variations. The general design method for the 2n-sided multilayer deployable prismatic structures is proposed. All the deployable structures constructed with this method have single degree-of-freedom (DOF), can be deployed and folded without stretching or twisting the facets, and have the compactly flat-folded configuration, which makes it to have great potential in engineering applications.

In recent years, high-rise buildings have developed very rapidly in our country. Because of the particularity of the high-rise building, more strictly technical measures should be taken in seismic design to ensure security. Three level fortifications, two stage design method have been used for seismic design in our country. Combined with the practical, the key points of response spectrum, time history analysis and performance design which related to seismic design of high-rise buildings were analyzed.
