Background: At present, new technologies provide numerous benefits in their correct use, while the need arises to study the consumption of some technologies, in this case, videogames, due to the negative consequences that they can cause in those subjects who have not yet consolidated their personality due to their excessive use. The study aimed to determine and establish associations between the dimensions of self-concept and the problematic use of videogames and their gender differences. Methods: A total of 525 university students participated in this study, representing 44.7% of the male gender and 55.3% of the female gender, with an average age of M = 20.80 SD = 3.12 years old. The instruments used were the CESR and AF-5 questionnaires. Results: The results reveal the association (p ≤ 0.05) between the problematic use of videogames and the dimensions of self-concept, showing that students with severe or potential problems have lower levels of self-concept. In addition, it has been found that men have more problems associated with the use of video games than women. Men have a greater physical and emotional self-concept, while women have better social self-concept. Conclusions: This study highlights the inverse association between self-concept and problematic use of video games, a fact that shows the need to develop intervention programs aimed at improving self-concept and to reduce the problematic use of video games. Likewise, the levels of self-concept reveal that men have higher scores in the emotional and physical dimension, while women stand out in the social dimension.

This study aims to analyze the differential impact of social and emotional learning programs between Portuguese elementary and middle school students, and to clarify developmental and gender differences in children and adolescents self-concept. The sample included 2682 students, 1237 elementary students (4th grade; Mage = 9.24; SD = 0.72) and 1445 middle school students (7th to 9th grade: Mage = 13.30; SD = 1.32). Self-report questionnaires were administered before and after intervention. Multilevel linear modeling with a repeated measures design was used to evaluate the effects of the program on self- concept. Results show significant intervention gains in social and emotional self-concept, which differ by grade level (elementary students benefited more). There were also differences between genders, boys showed more benefits in social self-concept and girls in emotional self-concept as well as a smaller decrease in academic self-concept. Participation in the programs led to more pronounced gains for elementary school students.

College students’ parenting intentions have received increased attention by scholars around the world in recent years, but little is known about potential demographic differences affecting the decision, such as gender and sexual orientation. The study proposed and empirically examined a model of the relationships between gender, sexual orientation, social self-concept, and parenting intentions in a large sample of university students on the west coast of the United States. The study found that social self-concept mediated the relationship between gender and parenting intentions for heterosexual students, but not for non-heterosexual students.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common conditions referred to gastroenterologists, but one of the least well understood. Part of the reason for this is the lack of consensus of opinion regarding the nature of the complaint. A growing body of evidence attests to the fact that, although certain physiological mechanisms exist that may contribute to the disorder, psychological factors also play an important role in the pathogenesis of IBS in a significant proportion of the patients. In particular, a variety of investigations point to a relationship between self-concept and supportive relationships as being important determinants in health outcomes. The purpose of the study was to determine whether statistically significant differences could be found between individuals suffering from IBS and healthy controls in terms of their self-concept and level of adjustment in terms of relationships, by analysing the results obtained on two psychometric questionnaires, namely the Personal, Home, Social and Formal Relations Questionnaire, and the Adolescent Self-Concept Scale. Statistically significant differences were found between a group of IBS sufferers and a non-IBS control group on the following sub-scales of the Personal, Home, Social and Formal relations Questionnaire: Self-esteem, Nervousness, Health, Family Influences, Personal Influences, Sociability – G, and Moral Sense, with the IBS group achieving higher on these sub-scales. Statistically significant differences were also found in the following dimensions of the Adolescent Self-Concept Scale: Physical Self, Personal Self, Family Self, and Social Self, with the IBS group again achieving higher on these dimensions than the non-IBS group.

The Deep Processes scale of the Inventory of Learning Processes was used to identify the deep and shallow processors and selected Tennesse Self-concept subscales were used to assess 143 undergraduate college students' self-concepts. Analysis showed that deep processors had significantly higher scores than shallow processors on Identity, Self-satisfaction, Behavior, Moral-Ethical Self, Personal Self, and Social Self and the total self-concept scales.
