BACKGROUND Patient portals offer modern digital tools for older adults with multiple chronic conditions (MCC) to engage in their health management. However, there are barriers to portal adoption among older adults. Understanding portal user interface and user experience (UI and UX) preferences of older adults with MCC may improve the accessibility, acceptability, and adoption of patient portals. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to use the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) as a framework for qualitatively describing the UI and UX, intent to use, and use behaviors among older patients with MCC. METHODS We carried out a qualitative descriptive study of Kaiser Permanente Colorado’s established patient portal, My Health Manager. Older patients (N=24; mean 78.41 (SD 5.4) years) with MCC participated in focus groups. Stratified random sampling was used to maximize age and experience with the portal among participants. The semistructured focus groups used a combination of discussion and think-aloud strategies. A total of 2 coders led the theoretically driven analysis based on the TAM to determine themes related to use behavior, portal usefulness and ease of use, and intent to use. RESULTS Portal users commonly used email, pharmacy, and lab results sections of the portal. Although, generally, the portal was seen to be easy to use, simple, and quick, challenges related to log-ins, UI design (color and font), and specific features were identified. Such challenges inhibited participants’ intent to use the portal entirely or specific features. Participants indicated that the portal improved patient-provider communication, saved time and money, and provided relevant health information. Participants intended to use features that were beneficial to their health management and easy to use. CONCLUSIONS Older adults are interested in using patient portals and are already taking advantage of the features available to them. We have the opportunity to better engage older adults in portal use but need to pay close attention to key considerations promoting usefulness and ease of use.

Abstract Older adults with a chronic health condition (e.g. hypertension) use various self-management methods. Healthcare technologies have the potential to support health self-management. However, it is necessary to understand the acceptance of these technologies as a precursor to older adults’ adoption and integration into their health plan. Our focus was on the factors older adults with hypertension initially consider when introduced to three new healthcare technologies that might support their health self-management. We compared their considerations for a blood pressure monitor, an electronic pillbox and a multifunction robot to simulate incrementally more complex technologies. Twenty-three participants (aged 65–84) completed four questionnaires and a semi-structured interview. The interview transcripts were analysed using a thematic analysis approach. We identified the factors that were frequently mentioned among the participants for each of the three healthcare technologies. The factors that older adults initially considered were familiarity, perceived benefits, perceived ease of use, perceived need for oneself, relative advantage, complexity and perceived need for others. Upon further reflection, participants considered advice acceptance, compatibility, convenience, facilitating conditions, perceived usefulness, privacy, subjective norm, and trust. We integrated the factors that older adults considered into the Healthcare Technology Acceptance Model (H-TAM), which elucidates the complexity of healthcare technology acceptance and provides guidance for future explorations.

Background: Older adults with multiple chronic conditions (MCC) rely heavily on caregivers for assistance with care. However, we know little about their psychosocial experiences and their needs for support in managing MCC. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of caregivers of older adults living in the community with MCC. Methods: This qualitative study was a secondary analysis of previously collected data from caregivers in Ontario and Alberta, Canada. Participants included caregivers of older adults (65 years and older) with three or more chronic conditions. Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews. Interview transcripts were coded and analyzed using Thorne’s interpretive description approach. Results: Most of the 47 caregiver participants were female (76.6%), aged 65 years of age or older (61.7%), married (87.2%) and were spouses to the care recipient (68.1%). Caregivers’ experiences of caring for community-living older adults with MCC were complex and included: (a) dealing with the demands of caregiving; (b) prioritizing chronic conditions; (c) living with my own health limitations; (d) feeling socially isolated and constrained; (e) remaining committed to caring; and (f) reaping the rewards of caregiving. Conclusions: Healthcare providers can play key roles in supporting caregivers of older adults with MCC by providing education and support on managing MCC, actively engaging them in goal setting and care planning, and linking them to appropriate community health and social support services. Communities can create environments that support caregivers in areas such as social participation, social inclusion, and community support and health services.

New media entertainment is currently being spotlighted by business practitioners and researchers. This article highlighted this issue of elder online users and explored the factors affecting their acceptance decisions in new media entertainment. Older adults prefer to status and value orientations, so their online acceptance of new media entertainment is significantly influenced by the perceived usefulness and social benefits. In addition, types of living arrangement significantly affect technology acceptance model of older adults.

Abstract. The long-term objective of this research is to enrich the development of science, especially the development of SMEs related to the adoption of information technology with studies using the Technology Acceptance Model. The specific aim of the research is to examine what factors are inhibiting the adoption of e commerce technology in SMEs in Banyumas Regency, as well as examining whether e-commerce adoption has an impact on increasing the demand for product quantities in SMEs. Collecting data in this study was carried out by distributing questionnaires through direct interviews with SMEs in Banyumas District who were respondents. The sampling technique in this study using random sampling technique. Whereas for data analysis using Statistical Product and Service Solution (SPSS) version 22.0 and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with AMOS program. The results of the study show that the Technology Acceptance Model theory is able to explain the institutions of SMEs actors to use e-commerce technology. Pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menyebarkan kuesioner melalui antar langsung kepada pelaku UMKM di Kabupaten Banyumas yang menjadi responden.  Teknik pengambilan sampel dalam penelitian ini dengan menggunakan teknik random sampling. Sedangkan untuk analisis data mengunakan Statistical Product and Service Solution (SPSS) versi 22.0 dan Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) dengan program AMOS. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa teori Technology Acceptance Model  mampu menjelaskan instensi para pelaku UMKM untuk menggunakan teknologi e-commerce.  Hasil penelitian juga berhasil menerima 3 (tiga) hipotesis yaitu Perceived usefulnes  berpengaruh terhadap use behavior, Perceived ease of use berpengaruh terhadap use behavior, use behavior  berpengaruh terhadap peningkatan permintaan kuantitas produk.  Hasil penelitian juga menunjukkan implementasi e-commerce tidak berpengaruh terhadap persepsi manfaat (perceived usefulness), Implementasi e-commerce tidak berpengaruh terhadap persepsi kemudahan pengoperasian sistem  (perceived ease of use) atau dengan kata lain menolak 2 (dua) hipotesis lainnya.Keywords. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) (Davis, 1989) measures perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use as predictors of a user’s intent to use computer technology, and their actual usage on the job. The measure first appeared in 1989, in an MIS Quarterly article by Fred Davis and in a coauthored article in Management Science(Davis, 1989; Davis, Bagozzi, & Warshaw, 1989). Extending the Theory of Reasoned Action (Ajzen & Fishbein, 1980) to technology, Perceived usefulness (U) is defined as “the degree to which a person believes a particular system would enhance his or her job performance.” Perceived ease of use (EOU) is defined as “the degree to which a person believes that using a particular system would be free of effort.” ‘Usage intentions’ (BI) was measured through self-predicted future usage and ‘user acceptance’ was measured through self-reported current usage. Although information technology is adopted to improve employee performance, these gains are often lost or diminished by users’ unwilling to accept and use the information system. Davis wanted to understand why users rejected or accepted information technologies, to better predict, explain and increase user acceptance. The TAM model has since become one of the most established models for predicting user acceptance.
