BACKGROUND Most of the patients experience post – operative pain and it is unavoidable. It is the duty of the nurses to ensure that patients' pain is assessed and managed effectively when they are at the hospital. Foot reflex therapy is one effective way the nurses can adopt to manage post-operative pain in patients. OBJECTIVE This study aims to prove the effectiveness of foot reflex therapy in post-operative pain in patients who are subjected to major abdominal surgery. METHODS This is a descriptive randomized control study that was conducted in the period month of Jan 2012 to Sep 2013 at Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Hospital among 360 patients who underwent major abdominal surgery. They were equally divided into two groups as control and study group and the results were analyzed statistically. RESULTS A majority of the patients in the study group showed a positive effect in the 4th and 5th post-operative day following foot reflex therapy. CONCLUSIONS The pre – existing pain and the post – operative pain is managed as collaboration along with nurses, patients, their care takers or families whenever appropriate in a multidisciplinary manner. Foot reflex therapy is one such alternative complementary therapy which the nurses can adopt to work in this accord. CLINICALTRIAL NOT REQUIRED

BACKGROUND Most patients experience post–operative pain and it is unavoidable. It is the duty of the nurses to ensure that patients' pain is assessed and managed effectively when they are at the hospital. Foot reflex therapy is one effective way nurses can adopt to manage the patient with pain after surgery. We wanted to evaluate the effectiveness of foot reflex therapy on post-operative pain in patients who are subjected to major abdominal surgery. METHODS This is a descriptive randomized control study that was conducted at Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Hospital, among 360 patients who underwent major abdominal surgery. They were equally divided into two groups as control and study groups and the results were analyzed statistically. RESULTS Majority of the patients in the study group showed a positive effect on pain control during 4th and 5th [ (Mean: 1.27 with SD: 1.12) (Mean: 0.03with SD: 0.32) at p < 0.001] post-operative day following foot reflex therapy. CONCLUSIONS The existing pain and the post-operative pain can be managed by nurses, patients, their care takers or families together, whenever appropriate, in a multidisciplinary manner. Foot reflex therapy is one such alternative complementary therapy which the nurses can adopt to implement the techniques independently. Aim of the study: was to determine the effect of perioperative warming measures for major abdominal surgery on postoperative hypothermia. Setting: The current study was conducted in operating room at Emergency Hospital of Menoufia University, Menoufia Governorate. Subjects: A purposive sample consists of 100 adult patients undergoing major abdominal surgery were randomly divided and assigned alternatively into two equal groups; 50 for each group. Tools: Three tools were used for data collection. Structured interview questionnaire: knowledge assessment sheet, perioperative assessment sheet, and shivering scale. Results: There was a highly significant difference between study and control groups regarding mean perioperative temperature at all times of interval of measurements p<0.001.Also there was a highly significant difference between study and control groups concerning postoperative shiveringP<0.001. Conclusions: Usage of perioperative warming measures for major abdominal surgery has a positive effect on the prevention of postoperative hypothermia and shivering. Recommendations: All staff of surgical nurses should be encouraged to be familial with perioperative warming measures and use these measures in order to maintain perioperative normothermia and prevent postoperative hypothermia.

Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy of oral zinc as adjuvant therapy in acute diarrhea comparing frequency and volume of stool and duration of diarrhea in children. Study Design: Case Control study. Setting: Department of Paediatrics, Shaheed Muhtrama Benazir Bhutto Medical College Layari General Hospital, Karachi. Period: September 2017 to August 2018. Material & Methods: A sample of 200 children, age 5- 15 years, suffering from acute diarrhea was divided into control and cases (study group). Oral zinc therapy (20 mg once daily) was given 14 days and its efficacy was observed in terms of stool frequency, stool volume and duration of diarrhea. Variables were noted at 24 hours and 48 hours and on 7th day of hospitalization. Data was analyzed on SPSS statistical software (version 22.0) at 95% confidence interval (P≤ 0.05). Results: Mean ± SD age in control and study group was noted as 9.1± 5.43 years and 9.5±6.02 years respectively (P=0.053). 89% of children of study group were discharged on 3rd day of hospitalization compared to only 45% from control group.  Zinc treated study group shows significant decrease in frequency of loose stools, stool volume and lesser duration of hospital stay. Conclusion: Oral zinc therapy was effective in decreasing the frequency of loose stools and volume and lesser duration of hospital stay in children.
