Assesment of the Quality and Reliability of the Information on Bone Tumor on Youtube (Preprint)

UNSTRUCTURED Introduction: Our aim is to assess the content quality and reliability of YouTube videos on bone tumors. Methods: We searched YouTube using the keyword “bone tumors,” and included in our study the first 50 videos listed. Two orthopedic surgeons analyzed the videos, and then, we examined them in terms of length, number of views and likes, and source. To evaluate their content quality, the Global Quality Score (GQS) (0–4), Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) (0–5), and DISCERN (15–75) scoring systems were used; based on these, the obtained data were statistically analyzed. Results: Of the 50 videos analyzed, four (8%) included animation, while 46 (92%) did not; 12 (24%) were uploaded by doctors, 23 (46%) by health channels, 10 (20%) by universities, three (6%) by clinics, and one (2%) each by a hospital and a trainer. The average video length was 16 minutes 18 seconds (38-6088 seconds), average number of views 14,856.24, and average number of likes 130.50 (1-1448). The mean scores of GQS, JAMA, and DISCERN were 2.22 (1-4), 2.12 (1-3), and 33.48 (15-75), respectively. There was no statistical significance in the scores and video length, or the number of likes and views between the two researchers. Discussion: YouTube videos on bone tumors have low content quality. Improvement of the same will help dispense correct information to patients, so that they can continue their treatment. We believe that patient treatment compliance can be increased by accelerating the patient’s preparation and adaptation process for treatment with accurate information.

BACKGROUND:The aim of this study was to evaluate the information quality of YouTube videos on hallux valgus. METHODS:A YouTube search was performed using the keyword 'hallux valgus' to determine the first 300 videos related to hallux valgus. A total of 54 videos met our inclusion criteria and evaluated for information quality by using DISCERN, Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and hallux valgus information assessment (HAVIA) scores. Number of views, time since the upload date, view rate, number of comments, number of likes, number of dislikes, video power index (VPI) values were calculated to determine video popularity. Video length (sec), video source and video content were also noted. The relation between information quality and these factors were statistically evaluated. RESULTS:The mean DISCERN score was 30.35{plus minus}11.56 (poor quality) (14-64), the mean JAMA score was 2.28{plus minus}0.96 (1-4), and the mean HAVIA score was 3.63{plus minus}2.42 (moderate quality) (0.5-8.5). Although videos uploaded by physicians had higher mean DISCERN, JAMA, and HAVIA scores than videos uploaded by non-physicians, the difference was not statistically significant. Additionally, view rates and VPI values were higher for videos uploaded by health channels, but the difference did not reach statistical significance. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between video length and DISCERN (r= 0.294, p= 0.028), and HAVIA scores (r= 0.326, p= 0.015). CONCLUSIONS:This present study demonstrated that the quality of information available on YouTube videos about hallux valgus was low and insufficient. Videos containing accurate information from reliable sources are needed to educate patients on hallux valgus, especially in less frequently mentioned topics such as postoperative complications and healing period.

Abstract Purpose To examine the content, quality and reliability of YouTube videos on exercises that can be performed after breast cancer surgery. Methods Videos selected from YouTube using the search terms “shoulder exercise and breast cancer surgery”, “arm exercise and breast cancer surgery”, and “physiotherapy/physical therapy and breast cancer surgery” were categorized as useful or misleading by a doctor and a physiotherapist. The videos were analyzed using the five-point DISCERN scale for reliability, the five-point Global Quality Scale (GQS) for quality, and a 10-item scale for comprehensiveness. Results Of the 180 videos initially analyzed, 82 were included in the study, and 42 (51.2%) were classified as having misleading information and 40 (48.8%) as having useful information. The reliability, content and quality scores of the videos containing useful information were higher (p<0.001). Most of the videos in the useful information group (80%) were uploaded by universities/professional organizations/physicians/physiotherapists, while the majority of those in the misleading information group (47.6%) were uploaded by websites providing independent healthcare information. The total and daily views of the videos were higher in the useful information group than in the misleading information group (p<0.001 and p=0.004, respectively). When the video parameters were evaluated between the two groups, no significant difference was found in the number of likes and comments and video length. Conclusion YouTube can be an important instrument to protect patients from musculoskeletal system complications after breast cancer surgery and improve existing complications. Universities, physicians, and physiotherapists should be encouraged to prepare more videos containing full and accurate information on this subject.

BACKGROUND Online Health Information has become more important in terms of Pandemic. YouTube is an online platform that people broadly use as a search tool for health information. The quality and reliability of YouTube videos containing health information range from low to high according to literature. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the quality, reliability, and comprehensiveness of contents for YouTube videos in the Turkish language as a source of information for mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS This was a descriptive study. "Coronavirus Mental Health" was searched as a subject on the YouTube channel in the Turkish language on April 11th, 2020. The first 100 videos were taken into consideration. Two independent reviewers classified videos as useful or misleading. The inter-observer agreement was evaluated with the kappa coefficient. Modified DISCERN index for reliability and Global Quality Scale for quality were used. The content was evaluated with a checklist developed by the researchers. RESULTS The mean number of views was 1442.42±3042.49 for useful videos and 1044±1471.83 for misleading videos. The mean Global Quality Scale was 2.68±0.96 for useful videos and 1±0 for misleading videos. The mean DISCERN score was 2.8±1.09, 2.72±0.75, and 3.12±0.66 for shared by independent/professional users, government/news agencies, and universities/professional organizations respectively. CONCLUSIONS The quality and reliability level of mental health videos in the Turkish language for the COVID-19 pandemic was found out moderate. Moreover, the comprehensiveness of contents didn’t include enough detailed information in regards to protecting mental health. CLINICALTRIAL NA

Abstract Purpose To evaluate the reliability, quality and effectiveness of YouTube videos adressing treatment of keratoconus. Methods This is a retrospective, cross-sectional and register-based study. A YouTube search was performed using the keyword treatment of keratoconus and the first 100 videos that came out were included in the study. The numbers of views, likes, dislikes, comments, daily viewing rate (number of views per day), uploaded source (physicians, public or private institution, health channel or patients), country of origin, video type (patient experience, scholarly information), and describe treatment technique (contact lens, corneal crosslinking, intrastromal corneal ring, topography guided-photorefractive keratectomy, keratoplasty) were evaluated for all videos. They were also evaluated regarding their DISCERN, Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), global quality (GQS) and usefulness scores by two independent ophthalmologists. Results Of the top 100 videos, 83 videos met the criteria. The mean DISCERN, JAMA, GQS and usefulness score were 42.92 ± 18.14, 2.7 ± 0.73,3.07 ± 1.25 and 2.99 ± 1.44, respectively. Of the 83 videos, 35(42.2%) had been uploaded by physicians, 19(22.9%) by patients, 15(18.1%) by health channel and 14(16.9%) by institutions/private health institutions. In the correlation analysis, the four scoring systems showed a statistically significant and strong positive correlation with each other (p < 0.001). In addition, viewing rate DISCERN, GQS, usefulness scores, number of likes, dislikes and comments showed a statistically significant positive correlation. Conclusion The content of YouTube videos regarding treatment of keratoconus is of generally good quality and is educational for patients. Increasing the number of videos uploaded by healthcare professionals will increase the quality, reliability and informative features of the videos.

Objectives: The aim of the present study is to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of the information provided in the videos about the clear aligner on the Youtube video platform, an internet information source. Materials and Methods: A video search was performed on the Youtube video platform using three keywords determined with the Google Trends application. After the videos were ranked based on their view counts, a total of 75 videos were analyzed, 47 being the first for each term. After applying the exclusion criteria (repetitive content, no audio content or title information, irrelevant to the topic, only promotional content, duration over 15 min, and addressing other orthodontic treatments), the remaining 47 videos were evaluated. Regarding the videos, the following parameters were recorded: View count, number of likes, number of dislikes, number of comments, video duration, and days since the uploaded date. A scoring system consisting of seven parameters was used to classify the video content quality as low and high. The video information and quality index were utilized to evaluate the quality of the videos universally. Statistical analyses were performed with Stata/IC computer program using Shapiro–Wilks, Kruskall–Wallis, Mann–Whitney U, and linear regression (Backward method) tests. Statistical significance value was set at P < 0.05. Results: Evaluation of the videos based on their upload source revealed that 27 videos were downloaded from individuals, ten videos from doctors and ten videos from commercial sources, and the number of subscribers to these sources varied significantly (P < 0.05). Evaluation of the videos based on the information provided, revealed that 32 videos had poor quality, ten videos had moderate quality and five videos had good quality information content, and the video durations varied significantly (P < 0.05). It was seen that of the 75 videos viewed, only 10 (13.3%) provided information of moderate-good quality. The number of likes was found to be the parameter that significantly affects the view count (P < 0.05). Conclusion: YouTube videos prove insufficient as a source of information on orthodontic treatment with clear aligner. Health-care professionals should be aware of online platforms to ensure that patients can access accurate information.

Abstract Purpose: The aim of the study was to assess the quality and reliability of videos on Fuch’s endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD) on YouTube.Methods: A search of YouTube was performed for the term “Fuch’s endothelial corneal dystrophy” without any changes to the website’s standard search preferences. The first 100 videos were recorded. A total of 71 videos were evaluated regarding the DISCERN score (min–max: 16–75), Journal of the American Medical Association score (min–max: 0–4), and Global Quality Scale score (min–max: 0–5).Results: The mean DISCERN score was 40.1±15.6 (moderate), the mean JAMA score was 2.01±0.7 (poor), the mean Global Quality Scale score was 2.5±1.3 (moderate), and the mean video power index score was 106.8±135.7. Twenty-three of the videos (32.4%) were uploaded by physicians, 25 (35.2%) by universities/private hospitals, 21 (29.6%) by health channels. Thirty-six videos (50.7%) contained information about the disease, 24 (33.8%) discussed surgical techniques, and 11 (15.5%) were about patient experience.Conclusion: YouTube provides only moderate-quality health information on FECD. Physicians and professional organizations should be aware of and embrace this evolving technology to raise awareness about FECD.

Abstract PurposeThe aim of this study is to evaluate the accuracy, quality and reliability of the videos on trabeculectomy on YouTube which is an online video-sharing platform.Scope This paper aims to assess the quality and analyze the content of the videos on Trabeculectomy on YouTube. The material has been obtained by a video search carried out on the Youtube -online video platform- with the keyword “Trabeculectomy”. The material (videos) was examined and selected in accordance with the exclusion criteria (not being in English, duplicate videos, lack of title information of the video, being irrelevant to the subject, videos with only advertising content, videos with a pixel below 240, takes longer than 20 minutes). After the implementation of exclusion criteria, the first ten suitable videos were included in the evaluation.MethodologyRegarding the material, the parameters of the number of views, the number of likes, the number of dislikes, the number of comments, the video duration, the days since the video was uploaded were recorded. Thus, after carving out the secondary data, a number of statistical analyses were performed namely Shapiro-Wilks, Kruskall-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U and Backward Linear Regression. In this framework, statistical analyzes were made via using the Stata software. Statistical significance value (threshold) was accepted as %10 (p<0.1).ResultsAfter the videos were evaluated according to the upload source, it was found that 2 videos were downloaded by the individuals who is not a doctor, 6 videos from doctors and 2 videos from a commercial source. The number of subscribers of the YouTube channels on which these sources have been uploaded was significantly different from each other (p<0.1). When the videos were evaluated according to the information content they provided, it was found that 5 videos had low quality information content, 4 videos had medium quality information content, 1 video had good quality information content, and the video durations were also significantly different from each other (p<0.1). Moreover, it was statistically determined that the parameter affecting the number of views was the number of likes (p<0.1).ConclusionYouTube videos are essentially insufficient as an educational material and an English source of information for the Trabeculectomy. YouTube is a common source of medical information for patients. This is the first study to assess the reliability and educational value of YouTube videos on neurotoxin procedures. YouTube.com was searched on June 15, 2020 using the keyword “Botox” or “neurotoxin.” A total of 100 videos were reviewed. Sixty-one videos met the inclusion criteria and were included in the final analysis. Video characteristics were noted, and a score was assigned to each video using the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) benchmark criteria and the Global Quality Score (GQS) to measure source reliability and educational value, respectively. A total of 61 videos that met the inclusion criteria had an average length of 589 seconds (9 minutes and 49 seconds), 210,673 views, 5,295 likes, 318 dislikes, and 478 comments. A total of 30 videos (49%) were posted with an intention to educate patients while 31 videos (51%) were posted with the intention to detail a personal experience with neurotoxin. Patient education videos were significantly more reliable (P JAMA< 0.001) and had more educational value (P GQS < 0.001) but were less popular than “personal experience videos.” Personal-experience videos posted by patients had higher popularity, more likes and comments, yet lower scores on reliability and education. Patients will continue to seek educational material online, and clinicians should utilize this information to help primarily educate patients with standardized and accurate information about their treatment.
