The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) is conducting research and development on nuclear hydrogen production using High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor and thermochemical water-splitting Iodine-Sulfur (IS) process aiming to develop large-scale hydrogen production technology for “hydrogen energy system”. In this paper, the present status of R&D on IS process at JAEA is presented which focuses on examining integrity of such components as chemical reactors, separators, etc. Based on previous screening of materials of construction mainly from the viewpoint of corrosion resistance in the harsh process conditions of IS process, it was planned to fabricate the IS components and examine their integrity in the process environments. At present, among the components of IS process plant consisting of three chemical reaction sections, i.e., the Bunsen reaction section, the sulfuric acid decomposition section and the hydrogen iodide decomposition section, key components in the Bunsen reaction section was fabricated.

Under the background of clean and low-carbon energy transformation, renewable distributed generation is connected to the distribution system on a large scale. This study proposes a probabilistic assessment method of hosting capacity considering wind–photovoltaic–load temporal characteristics in distribution networks. First, based on time series of wind, photovoltaic, and load demands, a discretization–aggregation technique is introduced to generate and filter extreme combinations. The method can effectively reduce the scenarios that need to be evaluated. Then a holomorphic embedding method considering generation and load scaling directions is proposed. The holomorphic function of voltage about an embedding variable is established, and it is analytically expanded in the form of series. The hosting capacity restrained by the voltage violation problem is calculated quickly and accurately. Finally, the proposed stochastic framework is implemented to evaluate hosting capacity involving renewable energy types, penetration levels, and locations. The hosting capacity of single energy and hybrid wind–solar renewable energy systems is evaluated from the perspective of probability analysis. The results verify the outstanding performance of the hybrid wind–solar energy system in improving the hosting capacity.

The coal industry contributes significantly to the social economy, but the emission of greenhouse gases puts huge pressure on the environment in the process of mining, transportation, and power generation. In the integrated energy system (IES), the current research about the power-to-gas (P2G) technology mainly focuses on the injection of hydrogen generated from renewable energy electrolyzed water into natural gas pipelines, which may cause hydrogen embrittlement of the pipeline and cannot be repaired. In this paper, sufficient hydrogen energy can be produced through P2G technology and coal-to-hydrogen (C2H) of coal gasification, considering the typical scenario of coal district is rich in coal and renewable energy. In order to transport the mined coal to the destination, hydrogen heavy trucks have a broad space for development, which can absorb hydrogen energy in time and avoid potentially dangerous hydrogen injection into pipelines and relatively expensive hydrogen storage. An optimized scheduling model of electric-gas IES is proposed based on second-order cone programming (SOCP). In the model proposed above, the closed industrial loop (including coal mining, hydrogen production, truck transportation of coal, and integrated energy systems) has been innovatively studied, to consume renewable energy and coordinate multi-energy. Finally, an electric-gas IES study case constructed by IEEE 30-node power system and Belgium 24-node natural gas network was used to analyze. The results show that by introducing the proposed hydrogen production technology, typical daily operating costs are effectively reduced by 7.7%. Under China’s carbon emissions trading system, the operating costs of hydrogen heavy trucks have been reduced by 0.95 and 4.68% respectively, compared with electric vehicles and diesel trucks. Under Europe’s stricter carbon emissions trading system, the percentages of cost reduction are 2.56 and 9.12%, respectively. The above technical results verify the feasibility, economy, low carbon, and effectiveness of the proposed mechanism.

The hydrogen energy system based on the multi-energy complementary of renewable energy can improve the consumption of renewable energy, reduce the adverse impact on the power grid system, and has the characteristics of green, low carbon, sustainable, etc., which is currently a global research hotspot. Based on the basic principles of hydrogen production technology, this paper introduces the current hydrogen energy system topology, and summarizes the technical advantages of renewable energy complementary hydrogen production and the complementary system energy coordination forms. The problems that have been solved or reached consensus are summarized, and the current status of hydrogen energy system research at home and abroad is introduced in detail. On this basis, the key technologies of multi-energy complementation of hydrogen energy system are elaborated, especially in-depth research and discussion on coordinated control strategies, energy storage and capacity allocation, energy management, and electrolysis water hydrogen production technology. The development trend of the multi-energy complementary system and the hydrogen energy industry chain is also presented, which provides a reference for the development of hydrogen production technology and hydrogen energy utilization of the renewable energy complementary system.

When planning and managing the present-day and future transformed electric power systems (EPS), such comparatively new properties as flexibility and cyber resilience shall be taken into account along with EPS conventional properties, such as Reliability, Security, Survivability, and Vulnerability. Large-scale introduction of renewable energy sources notably lowers the EPS flexibility. Installation of Energy Storages allows compensation of power production imbalance occurred when using renewable energy sources, which makes the energy system more robust, but lowers its cyber security. The paper considers the main performances and models of Energy Storages, their impact on flexibility and cyber security of electric networks; it also presents the technique for quantifying the flexibility of a network with Energy Storages, and identifies most promising directions of studies in this area.
