<p>In this work, Al-11Fe, Al-7Fe-4Ni and Al-7Fe-4Cr (in wt. %) alloys were prepared by combination of casting and hot extrusion. Microstructures of as-cast alloys were composed of aluminium matrix with large and coarse intermetallics such as Al<sub>13</sub>Fe<sub>4</sub>, Al<sub>13</sub>Cr<sub>2</sub> and Al<sub>5</sub>Cr. Subsequently, as-cast alloys were rapidly solidified by melt-spinning technique which led to the supersaturation of solid solution alloying elements. These rapidly solidified ribbons were milled and compacted by hot-extrusion method. Hot-extrusion caused that microstructures of all alloys were fine with uniform dispersed particles. Moreover, long-term thermal stability was tested at temperature 300 °C for as-cast and hot-extruded alloys and chromium was found to be the most suitable element for alloying to improve thermal stability.    </p>

The effect of grain orientation on hot cracking susceptibility of selective laser additive manufactured Alloy 718 was investigated by Varestraint testing. Electron backscattered diffraction showed that cracks in heat affected zone (HAZ) of the welded samples occurred in high angle grain boundaries. The extent of HAZ cracking was smaller in samples tested parallel to the elongated grain orientation and larger in samples transverse to the elongated grain orientation. However, for solidification cracking in the weld metal, no significant difference with respect to grain orientation in the base metal was found.

Six near stoichiometric, NiAl single-crystal alloys, with 0.05−1.5 at.% of Hf and Zr additions plus Si impurities, were microstructurally analyzed in the as-cast, homogenized, and aged conditions. Hafnium-rich interdendritic regions, containing the Heusler phase (Ni2AlHf), were found in all the as-cast alloys containing Hf. Homogenization heat treatments partially reduced these interdendritic segregated regions. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations of the as-cast and homogenized microstructures revealed the presence of a high density of fine Hf (or Zr) and Si-rich precipitates. These were identified as G-phase, Ni16X6Si7, or as an orthorhombic NiXSi phase, where X is Hf or Zr. Under these conditions the expected Heusler phase (β′) was almost completely absent. The Si responsible for the formation of the G and NiHfSi phases is the result of molten metal reacting with the Si-containing crucible used during the casting process. Varying the cooling rates after homogenization resulted in the refinement or complete suppression of the G and NiHfSi phases. In some of the alloys studied, long-term aging heat treatments resulted in the formation of Heusler precipitates, which were more stable at the aging temperature and coarsened at the expense of the G-phase. In other alloys, long-term aging resulted in the formation of the NiXSi phase. The stability of the Heusler or NiXSi phases can be traced to the reactive element (Hf or Zr) to silicon ratio. If the ratio is high, then the Heusler phase appears stable after long time aging. If the ratio is low, then the NiHfSi phase appears to be the stable phase.

Abstract The article presents the method to assess the diffusion coefficient D in the sub-layer of intermetallic phases formed during hot-dip galvanizing “Armco” iron and ductile cast iron EN-GJS-500-7. Hot-dip galvanizing is one of the most popular forms of long-term protection of Fe-C alloys against corrosion. The process for producing a protective layer of sufficient quality is closely related to diffusion of atoms of zinc and iron. The simulation consist in performed a hot-dip galvanizing in laboratory condition above Fe-C alloys, in the Department of Engineering of Cast Alloys and Composites. Galvanizing time ranged from 15 to 300 seconds. Then metallographic specimens were prepared, intermetallic layers were measured and diffusion coefficient (D) were calculated. It was found that the diffusion coefficient obtained during hot-dip galvanizing “Armco” iron and zinc is about two orders of magnitude less than the coefficient obtained on ductile cast iron EN-GJS-500-7.
