The aim of this study seeks to investigate the presence of qualitative and quantitative analysis of phytoconstituents of the flower of the plant Nelumbo nucifera. The present study provides evidence that successive solvent extract of Nelumbo nucifera contains medicinally important bioactive compounds and this justifies the use of plant species as traditional medicine for treatment of various diseases. Maximum phenolic and flavanoid content was observed in ethanolic extract of Nelumbo nucifera. The DPPH scavenging potential of the ethanolic extracts of the herbs ranged from 33%-55%. In the present study analysis of free radical scavenging activity and total phenolic and flavonoid content showed that mainly the ethanolic extract of flower extract can be the potent source of natural antioxidants. Catunaregam tomentosa (Blume ex DC) Tirveng is commonly known as Khet in Thailand and Bisa Ular or Badang in Malaysia. The tree is widely distributed in the north-east region of Thailand while in Malaysia the tree usually grows in the open waterfront area at Terengganu. This plant belongs to the Rubiaceae family, and the genus catunaregam has interesting pharmacological activities such as anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, antidysenteric, antifertility and immunomodulatory. In this study, the leaves were extracted using dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and ethanol. Total phenolic was determined by Folin-Ciocalteau method while total flavonoid was determined by the aluminium chloride calorimetric method. Meanwhile, its antioxidant activity was evaluated by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. The ethanolic extract was found to have the highest percentages of phenolic and flavonoid content. Interestingly, ethanolic extract also demonstrated strong DPPH scavenging activity with IC50 at 20.07 ± 0.51µg/mL.

<p><em>Ferula assafoetida, Saussurea costus</em> and  <em>Peganum harmala</em> are considered an important traditional folk medicines in Oman, extracts of these plants were screened for assessing bioactive phytochemical constituents and their antioxidant property. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were evaluated to explore the reliable and potential sources of novel natural antioxidants. Preliminary phytochemical screening of different plant extracts and phytochemical investigation showed variations in the presence and amount of active ingredients. All the fractions of <em>P.harmala</em>, <em>S.costus and F.assafoetida have </em>flavonoid and phenolic compounds, whereas, the highest amount was found in <em>F.assafoetida which was </em>0.370, 0.053 mg/ml respectively. Under antioxidant study the H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub> free radical scavenging potential and Phosphomolybdate assay were studied <em>in vitro</em> for the determination of antioxidant activity. However <em>S. costus</em> extract showed the highest scavenging percentages 89%. In Phosphomolybdate assay <em>Ferula assafoetida </em>has a very good antioxidant potential due to   phenolic and flavonoid components.</p>

Nyctanthes arbour-tristis is a shrub belongs to the family Oleaceae. The flowers of this plant are fragrant since the presence of flavonol glycosides. It has also been reported for the presence of β-sitosterol, iridoid glycosides, tannins etc., and known to have immunostimulant, hepatoprotective, antiviral and antifungal activities. In the present study an attempt is made to identify antioxidant capacity and anthelminthic potential of methanolic flower extract of Nyctanthes arbour-tristis. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by total phenolic content assay, total flavonoids content assay, free radical scavenging activity and reducing ability methods. Anthelmintic activity was evaluated on Perithima posthuma using Piperazine citrate as standard drug. The results obtained for the above activities reveals that Nyctanthes arbour-tristis shows considerable antioxidant activity for all the methods and anthelminthic potential at 300 mg/ml. Objective: To investigate the antioxidant activity of ethanolic extract of Terminalia bellerica fruit pulp (TBFP), seed (TBS) and bark (TBB), and identification of phytochemical constituents of said extracts.Methods: The antioxidant potential of T. bellerica (TB) parts was evaluated by free radical scavenging activity (FRSA), superoxide anion radical scavenging activity (SARSA), hydroxyl radical scavenging activity (HRSA) and compared with reference standard quercetin. Lipid peroxidation (LPO), ferric thiocyanate activity (FTC) and reducing power (RP) of the plant extracts were also examined. The phytochemical constituents of said extracts have been quantified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) method.Results: Ethanolic extract of TBFP exhibited high phenolic content (254.33) followed by TBS (227.33) and TBB (185) mg/g of GAE. TBFP showed lowest IC50 for FRSA (62 µg/ml), SARSA (39 µg/ml) and HRSA (27 µg/ml) and highest RP (3.39 ascorbic acid equivalents/ml). TBB showed lowest IC50 for LPO (48 µg/ml) whereas TBS showed lowest IC50 for FTC (109 µg/ml). Predominant phyto-compounds present in TB extracts were quinic acid, gallic acid, ethyl galate, 9, 12 octadecadienoic acid and glucopyranose in varying concentrations as analyzed by GC-MS.Conclusion: On the basis of correlation of antioxidant studies with total phenolic content (TPC) and GC-MS analysis of different part of TB, it may be concluded that high concentration of total phenolics and other bioactive phytochemicals of TB extracts make it a potential source of nutraceutical antioxidants.

The present study aims to evaluate the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of ethanol extracts from gamma-irradiated pomegranate (Punica granatum) peel powder (PE) at the dose levels of 0, 3, 6, and 9 kGy. The ?ntioxidant activity of the extracts was estimated using the radical scavenging activity against 2,2?-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH?), ?-carotene/linoleic acid bleaching system, and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). Antibacterial activity of the extracts was assessed against Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsilla penumoneae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Salmonella typhumurium. The results showed that PE treated with 6 kGy had a higher content of total phenolic compounds (TPC), total flavonoid compounds (TFC), and antioxidant activity. Hence, the PE of 6 kGy-irradiated peels were selected to be added to beef sausage. Different concentrations of 6 KGy-irradiated PE were applied to improve beef sausage hygienic quality and extend the shelf life during cold storage (4?C). The results indicated that when 12 mL of the extract were added to one kg of beef sausage, the shelf-life of the sausage was extended from 15 days to 50 days (at 4?C), compared with the control, without changes of the microbiological, chemical, and sensory attributes.

Cocoa shell is underexploited and is considered as waste. However, roasting cocoa is a fundamental step in producing cocoa products. Composition of the cocoa shell depends on the origin whereas cocoa processing involves fermentation, drying and roasting. However, scarce research has been conducted to analyze the composition of Malaysian cocoa shells at different roasting temperatures. Therefore, this research aims to determine the effect of different roasting temperatures (110, 120, 130, 140 and 150°C) on the proximate composition, colour and antioxidant activity of cocoa shell. Changes in antioxidant activity and polyphenol content were recorded. Fiber and moisture content were significantly (p<0.05) higher in unroasted cocoa shell. However, the protein was found to decrease significantly (p<0.05) after roasting at 150°C (10.93%). Fat content was found higher in roasted cocoa shell at 150°C (6.82%) compared to the unroasted cocoa shell (6.09%). The colour (L value) recorded significantly (p<0.05). the highest for unroasted cocoa shell (51.28) and the lowest at 150°C (47.93), DPPH radical scavenging activity of ethanolic extract of cocoa shell was significantly (p<0.05) higher in 0% ethanol concentration compared to other ethanol concentrations (20, 50, 80 and 100%). The roasted cocoa shell may be considered as a source of natural antioxidants for functional food development and intermediate food ingredient.

Fruit peels are increasingly being used as functional foods nowadays. Peelings of twelve varieties of Persea americana fruits consumed in Cameroon were investigated for their phenolic compounds (polyphenols and flavonoids) using three solvents systems, water, ethanol: water (50 : 50 v / v ), and ethanol, and antioxidant activity using total antioxidant capacity (TAC), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging methods. Total polyphenol, flavonoids, and antioxidant potential of the peels significantly varied with P. americana variety and also with the extraction solvents in the order ethanol > ethanol: water > water. Total phenolic content varied from 2407 (Fuerte florid) to 673 (Semil) mg GAE/g DM, respectively, while flavonoids varied from 986 to 119 mg QE/g DM for Fuerte florid and Hickson varieties, respectively. TAC, respectively, varied between 132.87 and 126.85 mg AAE/g DM with Hass and Semil varieties, respectively. The highest DPPH scavenging capacity was recorded for the ethanolic extract with Lula (86.33%) and the least for the aqueous extract with the Semil (30.11%) variety. With FRAP, the highest capacity was obtained with hydroethanolic extract of Fuerte florid (0.43 mg AAE/g DM) and the least for aqueous extract with the Semil (0.269 mg AAE/g DM) variety. In conclusion, varieties of avocado peels are a good source of antioxidants. Solvent extraction significantly affected the concentration of bioactive compounds but not the potency of the antioxidants. A weakly positive correlation but not significant between the quantity of polyphenol, flavonoid, and antioxidant capacity of avocado peelings was obtained in this study.

Free radicals or reactive oxygen species are involved in various pharmacological conditions. As synthetic antioxidants possess numerous adverse health effects, the medicinal plants possessing antioxidant components can be used to prevent harmful effects of reactive oxygen species. In the present study leaves of Amaranthus tricolor Linn were used to prepare chloroform (CEAT), methanolic (MEAT) and aqueous (AEAT) extracts, analyze the presence of phytochemicals and evaluation of in-vitro antioxidant property. Quantitative determination of phenols, tannins and flavonoids in leaves A.tricolor was carried out using spectrophotometric methods. The antioxidant activity was performed by DPPH, p-NDA radical scavenging methods for different extracts of the plant. The plant species showed that methanolic extract (MEAT) on higher concentration possess better antioxidant potential when compared with reference standard ascorbic acid. The plant extracts exhibited strong antioxidant DPPH radical scavenging activity with the IC50 values 290, 657, 830 and 130μg/ml of MEAT, CEAT, AEAT and ASA respectively. In scavenging hydroxyl radical by p-NDA method the MEAT showed maximum activity, CEAT showed moderate and AEAT showed minimum activity. The strongest antioxidant activity of MEAT could be due to the presence of flavonoids and phenols.
