This study seeks to investigate herd behaviour among equity mutual fund managers and the performance of mutual funds that trade against the herd in South Africa. The behaviour of mutual funds has an effect on the stability and volatility of stock markets, the ultimate returns to the investors. The study builds upon the efficient market hypothesis, portfolio theory and behavioural finance to provide evidence of the behaviour of mutual funds in an emerging market context using the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. The Lakonishok, Shleifer and Vishney (1991) measure of herding is used to ascertain the behaviour of mutual funds over the period 2006 to 2012. Institutional investors in South Africa are susceptible to the behavioural bias of herding and this phenomenon influences the performance of their funds. Funds that trade in the opposite direction of herd funds are able to put up a superior performance over time. Superior performance, however, does not entice mutual fund investors to invest less in under-performing funds and more in funds that recently show superior performance. These findings imply that following investment waves does not culminate in superior returns in the stock market. Consequently, mutual funds that take an opposite direction to herd funds help stabilize the stock market and lessen the severity of bear markets. This study categorizes mutual funds into ‘herding’ and ‘contrarian’ and provides an insight into the performance of each category. Investors who oppose herd behaviour realize greater returns over time while stabilizing the markets at the same time.

Since the 20th century, corporate governance mechanisms have been developed globally to curb the negative effects of the agency problem. South Africa was a pioneer with the publication of the first King Report on corporate governance in 1994. Given the paucity of research on corporate governance in the country, the researchers set out to investigate the corporate governance practices of 230 companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange over the period 2002 to 2010. Annual corporate governance scores were compiled by means of content analysis of the sample companies’ annual reports. The empirical findings revealed an increasing compliance trend towards 2010. Although the sample companies tended to improve the disclosure of their corporate governance practices over time, their practices were not per se acceptable (where acceptability implies meeting the King II recommendations). Inexperienced directors and managers might benefit from more training to enhance their understanding of the application of corporate governance principles.

The development of mutual fund industry in Indonesia has increases every year. From those several types of equity funds, the Net Asset Value (NAV) of mutual funds has increased by quite high number from year to year compared to other types. This research was assess the performance of mutual funds and examine those several consistency over the use of performance sizing methods from Sharpe ratio, Treynor index and Jensen's Alpha methods. Current problem who was stumbled was how the performance of stock mutual funds was measured by the Sharpe ratio, Treynor index and Jensen's Alpha methods and whether there has consistency over its performance by using it. The recent sample was 37 mutual funds that were registered at BAPEPAM-LK and still operating in Indonesia from January 2009 to October 2013. Performance evaluations used Sharpe ratio method, Treynor index and Jensen's Alpha. As for assess those consistency of the use performance sizing methods was done by Kendall coefficient of concordance (W) test. The result over this research said that Panin Dana Maksima and Panin Dana Prima are the best mutual funds, this could be seen during these surveillance period which found that mutual fund has superior performance above the market. The result of consistency test over those performance of stock mutual funds using Kendall W's concordance coefficient found that there has consistency or harmony when evaluated the performance of equity funds by using Sharpe Ratio, Treynor Index and Jensen's Alpha methods during those period.

The success of investors in obtaining huge financial rewards from the stock market depends on their ability to predict the direction of the stock market index. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of several ensemble prediction models (Boosted, RUS-Boosted, Subspace Disc, Bagged, and Subspace KNN) in predicting the daily direction of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) All-Share index compared to other commonly used machine learning techniques including support vector machines (SVM), logistic regression and [Formula: see text]-nearest neighbor (KNN). The findings in this study show that, among all ensemble models, Boosted algorithm is the best performer followed by RUS-Boosted. When compared to the other techniques, ensemble technique (represented by Boosted) outperformed these techniques, followed by KNN, logistic regression and SVM, respectively. These findings suggest that investors should include ensemble models among the index prediction models if they want to make huge profits in the stock markets. However, not all investors can benefit from this as models may suffer from alpha decay as more and more investors use them, implying that the successful algorithms have limited shelf life.

This paper examines the exchange rate returns of the Rand (relative to the US dollar) and the Naira (relative to the US dollar) for the presence of volatility. It also examines the effect of the exchange rate returns on the performance of their respective stock market. While it was found that the returns of the South African Rand was volatile, the Nigerian naira was not. Estimating the effect of exchange rate returns and crude oil price on the stock market indices of both countries showed that exchange rate return have a positive effect on the performance of the Nigerian stock exchange thus, confirming the stock flow hypothesis for Nigeria and refuting same for South Africa. Although the VAR granger causality identifies short run fluctuation of the naira as a significant factor affecting the performance of the Nigerian stock exchange in the short run, the Johannesburg stock exchange was found to be mostly affected by short run changes in the Rand and the UK FTSE 100. The paper concludes that policies aimed at stabilizing exchange rate and encouraing more non-oil stocks to be quoted in the Nigerian stock exchange will important. For the Johanesburg stock exchange, raising the listing requirement for firms quoted in the UK FTSE 100 and also seeking listing or already listed in the JSE will be a plausible idea. For both countries, however, curtailing swings in their exchange rate returns would help attract new investments and sustain existing ones hence, helping to spur growth.

The main purpose of this article is to explore the social media policies of financial institutions in South Africa. Owing to the advances in technology, businesses are exposed to many opportunities but also risks in social media platforms. For the study, a thematic framework was considered to analyze social media policies, which included risk and relationship building, brand image and reputation, stakeholders and communities, disciplinary action and compliance as well as professional and personal guidelines. A qualitative document analysis of social media policies of select South African Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) listed financial institutions was then conducted. For the data analysis, a thematic document analysis using a consensual qualitative research process was applied. The results showed that all the financial institutions appreciated the value and opportunities provided by social media and ensured strict compliance to their social media policies. However, there were some financial institutions that did not focus on relationship building, did not mention brand image and reputation, did not include all stakeholders, and did not suggest personal guidelines in their social media policies.

PurposeRecent studies have shown that low-volatility shares outperform high-volatility shares. Given the conventional finance theory that risk drives return, this study aims to investigate and attempt to explain the presence of the low-risk anomaly (LRA) in South Africa.Design/methodology/approachUsing share prices from 1990 to 2016, various buy-and-hold strategies are constructed to determine the return to an investor attempting to capitalise on such an anomaly. These strategies involve combinations relating to a price filter, the calculation of risk and volatility, value-weighting or equal-weighting of portfolios and the window period to construct said portfolios.FindingsIt was found that the LRA exists on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE_=) when using univariate sorts, without controlling for the size or value effect. When using multivariate portfolio sorts (size and volatility or value and volatility), it was found that the LRA does not exist on the JSE under the majority of risk proxies, but particularly prevalent when downside risk is used. This loosely points towards a potential “inverse momentum” effect where low-return portfolios outperform their counterparts.Originality/valueIn general, it is established that the risk–return relationship is non-linear and deterministic under traditional proxies, but improves to being somewhat, but not completely, linear under a Kalman filter. The Kalman filter, which can be considered a proxy for learning, does not remove the anomaly in its entirety, indicating that behavioural approaches are needed to explain such phenomena.

The Capital Market Law, which carries with it the trust institutions, contains provisions regarding collective investment contract mutual funds (RD KIK) that produce securities in the form of participation units, which are traded on the stock exchange. In RD KIK, there is a trust relationship between the unit holder of the custodian bank and the investment manager. The legal relationship in the concept of collective RD KIK is similar to what happens in trusts. In the Anglo-Saxon legal tradition, mutual funds are often referred to as unit trusts and/or investment trusts, where the sponsor acts as a settlor who hands over his assets to the trustee, the sponsor acts as the settlor in the trusts as well as the unit holder in a collective investment contract mutual fund. In connection with these problems, normative legal research is carried out using a statute approach, a conceptual approach and a comparative approach. The method used in analyzing this research is qualitative analysis. So, it can be seen that the role of the custodian bank and investment manager acts as a trustee, where the custodian bank is given the authority to carry out collective custody of the assets of the joint investment contract unit holder. The investment manager is given the power to manage or control the assets submitted by the sponsor or settlor in the concept of trusts law. Thus, it can be said that the RD KIK concept is similar to the idea of trusts because it fulfills the elements of trusts.

This study aims to analyze the stock mutual funds that have the best performance and provide an overview to investors about stock mutual funds can be bought by investors. The research methodology used is a quantitative method with the type of time series data and data sources derived from secondary data obtained from the Indonesia Stock Exchange. The research period from 2012 to 2016. Data analysis techniques used are using the Jensen model which explains that the performance of Mutual Funds can be seen from the amount of alpha of each Mutual Fund with the provisions that if a Mutual Fund has a positive alpha means it has good performance, vice versa Funds with negative alpha indicate poor performance. The results of this study indicate that the performance of Coal, Gold, Nickel and Crude Oil on Equity Funds that manage Capital, Kapital Plus, and Consumption Plus mutual funds products based on the Jensen method each produces insignificant alpha and Jensen alpha values. This means that the performance of mutual funds Kapital, Kapital Plus, and Consumption Plus are not affected by the ups and downs of prices of Coal, Gold, Nickel and Crude Oil.

This paper examines whether mutual fund managers incorporate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors when deciding which sector to invest on behalf of their trustees. In doing this, the top 20 South African mutual fund companies (asset managers) listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) were selected. The paper identified the top 30 JSE listed companies (in the large industrial, equipment, and machinery sectors, excluding unlisted and service-oriented companies) where trustees’ funds were invested (with a total of 28 companies between 2007 and 2017) from the mutual fund companies’ Equity Fund Fact Sheets 2017 (representing recent investment focus). ESG data were collected from the integrated and sustainability reports at the sampled companies’ websites, and financial data were sourced from the IRESS database. This study adopted the panel data analysis. The results show an insignificant negative relationship between the ESG proxies (water usage, employee health and safety cost [number of work-related fatalities], percentage of women on corporate board) and return on equity (ROE). This means that the sampled companies disregard the United Nations Principle of Responsible Investment (UN PRI) guideline, suggesting that asset managers focus on increasing returns on shareholders’ investment without considering ESG issues. The paper concludes that the disregard for responsible investment guidelines does not encourage companies to improve their unsustainable business practices.
