Processing massive data amounts and Big Data became nowadays one of the most significant problems in computer science. The difficulties with education on this field arise, the appropriate teaching methods and tools are needed. The processing of vast amounts of data arriving quickly requires the choice and arrangement of extended hardware platforms.In the paper we will show an approach for teaching students in Big Data and also the choice and arrangement of an appropriate programming platform for Big Data laboratories. Usage of an e-learning platform Moodle, a dedicated platform for teaching, could allow the teaching staff and students an improved contact with by enhancing mutually communication possibilities. We will show the preparation of Hadoop platform tools and Big Data cluster based on Cloudera and Ambari. The both solutions together could enable to cope with the problems in education of students in the field of Big Data.

Purpose – Current e-learning platforms are based on relational database management systems (RDBMS) and are well suited for handling structured data. However, it is expected from e-learning solutions to efficiently handle unstructured data as well. The purpose of this paper is to show an alternative to current solutions for unstructured data management. Design/methodology/approach – Current repository-based solution for file management was compared to MongoDB architecture according to their functionalities and characteristics. This included several categories: data integrity, hardware acquisition, processing files, availability, handling concurrent users, partition tolerance, disaster recovery, backup policies and scalability. Findings – This paper shows that it is possible to improve e-learning platform capabilities by implementing a hybrid database architecture that incorporates RDBMS for handling structured data and MongoDB database system for handling unstructured data. Research limitations/implications – The study shows an acceptable adoption of MongoDB inside a service-oriented architecture (SOA) for enhancing e-learning solutions. Practical implications – This research enables an efficient file handling not only for e-learning systems, but also for any system where file handling is needed. Originality/value – It is expected that future single/joint e-learning initiatives will need to manage huge amount of files and they will require effective file handling solution. The new architecture solution for file handling is offered in this paper: it is different from current solutions because it is less expensive, more efficient, more flexible and requires less administrative and development effort for building and maintaining.

Machine learning (ML), neural network (NN), evolutionary algorithm (EA), fuzzy systems (FSs), as well as computer science have been very famous and very significant for many years. They have been applied to many different areas. They have contributed much to developments of many large-scale corporations, massive organizations, etc. Lots of information and massive data sets (MDSs) have been generated from these big corporations, organizations, etc. These big data sets (BDSs) have been the challenges of many commercial applications, researches, etc. Therefore, there have been many algorithms of the ML, the NN, the EA, the FSs, as well as computer science which have been developed to handle these massive data sets successfully. To support for this process, the authors have displayed all the possible algorithms of the NN for the large-scale data sets (LSDSs) successfully in this chapter. Finally, they have presented a novel model of the NN for the BDS in a sequential environment (SE) and a distributed network environment (DNE).

In this chapter we propose functional specifications and a component-based architecture for designing e-learning platforms. An important feature is that the proposed specifications and architecture are based on the experience gained in an e-learning company and result from a reengineering process. To guide the reengineering process, we used two reference models, which are the e-learning global process and the e-learning global cycle. The functional specifications are described according to the e-learning global cycle phases and they are used to propose a software component based architecture. The proposed kernel of components was completed with services to allow interoperability and standard compliance between several e-learning platforms. We hope that this case-study exemplifies e-learning platform suppliers’ needs and available pragmatic solutions. We conclude on foreseeable evolutions of e-learning actors needs and practices and on new platform features for fulfilling such needs.

E-learning has an increasingly important role within the ever-growing tertiary education system in many developed countries. While the research on e-learning is still relatively a novel discipline, with even a universally accepted definition being absent, there are numerous indications pointing to its increasing importance. For example, in the US alone, some 35% of university students take at least one online degree, while the ratio has been steadily increasing in the recent years. There are numerous underlying factors which support the intensification of e-learning. Most countries cannot keep up with the increasing demand for tertiary education by merely expanding their traditional universities – be it because of high needed fixed investments, or because or elevated costs of engaging the relatively scarce teaching staff. In the same time, the ICT revolution – as well as the ongoing COVID outbreak – both facilitate and require shifts to a delocalized contact between students and the teaching staff. In sum, this provides many developing countries with a mechanism of provision of tertiary education to large masses of prospective students without having to invest in physical infrastructure. However, this is not a process without challenges. Regulation in many countries is only yet to cope with these technology and demography-induced shifts in education. Some academic fields are not yet appropriate for distance learning. Cheating and plagiarism could be widespread if not tackled with appropriate strategies and technological solutions. This document examines these elements by providing an overview of the experiences in some of the countries where the e-learning system already took deep roots. Georgia has much to gain if it includes e-learning in its tertiary education system. Georgia at this moment is, seemingly, one of the few relatively developed countries which still do not have a fully-fledged and accredited e-learning platform within its tertiary education system. However, as World Bank data show, some 64% of Georgia’s high school graduates successfully enroll to a university, which is approx. 10 percentage points lower than OECD average, or as much as 25-30 percentage points lower than some of the world’s top education performers, such as Finland, the Netherlands or South Korea. While this gap needs to be bridged if Georgia is to tap the potential of the ongoing technological revolution, introduction of e-learning to its system may be of significant help, while it would not incur large additional costs. Indeed, numerous international examples show that in many countries, the number of students enrolled to universities soared following the introduction of e-learning, while the quality of education has not declined. In terms of increasing the base of potential enrollments, in Georgia’s case it is important to underline that e-learning may also be a mean of reaching out and connecting with members of the numerous Georgian diaspora. Also, setting up an e-learning platform also helps the universities to engage top lecturers in many educational domains at relatively low cost, meaning that more students may be given a higher quality education. COVID-19 outbreak is a case in point. The ongoing pandemics outbreak has shown, among other, that true business continuity for many education institutions, at all education levels, could have only been reached by employing adequate e-learning procedures. This means that those who have already instituted some forms of e-learning had fewer difficulties in overcoming the operative issues, while continuing to deliver education. Defining, measuring, and achieving quality of e-learning systems are not an easy task. Accordingly, one of the most essential goals for the higher educational institutes is how to reach a high and satisfied level of quality in their learning systems. Achieving such level needs adequate and continuous improvements for the whole e-learning environment elements. Therefore, we aim in our work to construct a unified framework for total quality management system (TQMS) that attempt to satisfy the quality requirements, needs, and standards. The objective of this paper is to present a quality control model for e-learning system that adopts the e-learning platform according to the on-line determination of both user's requirements and global standards. This paper proposed software architecture of quality Management framework for e-learning that could be adopted by different higher education institutes to control the quality of the e-learning process, and assure the quality of the e-learning process outcome. The proposed framework is based on a tri-dimensions quality model. The three dimensions are set of quality requirements for e-learning environment represented in Quality Assurance (QA) policies that will be formalized by using policy based approach, the specifications of e-learning platform that provide learning and teaching activities, and quality control process loop. The architecture for monitor and ensure quality control of the QA policies for e-learning system will deliver the whole learning services in an optimal way. It is also flexible and can be implemented over any e-learning system.


The aim of our research is to automatically deduce the learning style from the analysis of browsing behaviour. To find how to deduce the learning style, we are investigating, in this paper, the relationships between the learner’s navigation behaviour and his/her learning style in web-based learning. To explore this relation, we carried out an experiment with 27 students of computer science at the engineering school (ESI-Algeria). The students used a hypermedia course on an e-learning platform. The learners’ navigation behaviour is evaluated using a navigation type indicator that we propose and calculate based on trace analysis. The findings are presented with regard to the learning styles measured using the Index of Learning Styles by (Felder and Solomon 1996). We conclude with a discussion of these results.

Abstract.  Weak security of information in particular in e-learning systems can open the risk of harming the elements that exist within the system environment. So this research has the purpose to analyze the fraud or attacks that are usually done by users and identify patterns of behavior or attitudes that allow damage to the security system in e-learning. This study aims to identify the level of awareness of users, especially students in using e-learning system. This study uses an experimental method of user e-learning in computer science faculty UPN "Veteran" Jakarta where the end result of this research is to identify the level of awareness of the user to the security of e-learning system.Abstrak. Lemahnya keamanan informasi pada khususnya dalam sistem e-learning dapat membuka resiko yang merugikan elemen-elemen yang ada didalam lingkungan sistem tersebut. Sehingga penelitian ini memiliki tujuan untuk menganalisa kecurangan maupun serangan yang biasa dilakukan oleh pengguna dan mengidentifikasikan pola perilaku ataupun sikap yang memungkinkan merusak sistem keamanan pada e-learning. Penelitian ini memiliki tujuan untuk mengidentifikasi tingkat kesadaran pengguna terutama mahasiswa dalam menggunakan sistem e-learning. Studi ini menggunakan metode eksperimental terhadap user e-learning di lingkungan fakultas ilmu komputer UPN “Veteran” Jakarta dimana hasil akhir dari penelitian ini adalah pengindentifikasian tingkat kesadaran user terhadap keamanan sistem e-learning.
