The fundamental idea we discuss in this paper is that the failure of Europe to deal with the international crisis is due, first and foremost, to the deepening of a more specific crisis that affected the very process of European integration and developed through two main channels: one, broader, linked to the erosion of the original driving forces underpinning integration in Europe; another, more circumscribed, linked to the malfunctioning of the euro as an internal adjustment mechanism of the currency zone. To deal with these structural dimensions of the crisis, we put forward a model of a Global Europe against the model of Continental Europe that has dominated the integration process until now and in this alternative framework we discuss the potential role of Portugal and of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries.

The key geopolitical factors impeding the integration process are identified. The basic threats to Armenia’s transport safety as an important component of national security are determined. The potential role of Armenia in the implementation of the TRACECA transport corridor at the opening of the Armenian-Turkish border is identified. The possibility of Armenia’s integration into the international transport corridor "North-South" through the implementation of the project of construction of Iran-Armenia is revealed.

AbstractA nation’s economic potential is always concentrated within cities. Polish cities were faced with quite radical changes in the last two decades. During this period, some cities saw losses of more and more citizens and were not ready to develop new economic approaches. Other cities were able to attract both people and businesses. The main objective of the article is to identify the changes in the economic position of Polish cities and the factors which were the driving forces behind them (including, in particular, the role of European integration). Results of the conducted regression analyses confirm that it is easier to identify “losing” factors (e.g. dependency on declining industry) than “winning” ones (as they are more individualized and more difficult to capture in statistical models). The availability of EU funds for local governments has been confirmed to be a significant factor explaining the changes in the economic position of Polish cities.

This article elaborates a theory of combined and uneven development that takes the dimensions of spatiality, labour and institutions seriously. Drawing on this conceptual framework, an account is given of the way the 2007–2008 crisis was inflected in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The integration of these countries with the global economy has taken place in different ways through trade, investment and finance. This has not only been a source of unevenness within and between them, but has also determined the form and severity with which they have experienced the crisis. The combined and uneven development perspective is therefore able to provide a rich and more dynamic account of economic development and the transmission of the crisis. Further, rather than labour being treated as one among many institutions, it is privileged in its potential role of instigating deep social change.

Circular economy is an alternative to traditional industrial system based on producing and consuming as much as possible. Contrary to produce and dispose model, circular economy emphasizes resource efficiency in both consumption and production cycle. This research aims to reveal potential role of circular economy with specific applications to small and medium sized enterprises in Kuwait. It is proposed that by applying circular economy concepts, Gulf Cooperation Council countries, particularly Kuwait, can achieve a competitive edge in global economy while minimizing the impact of industrial activities to the environment. Is it also proposed that small and medium sized enterprises tend to be the least efficient enterprises. Therefore, they have the highest potential for circular economy applications that lead to innovation, sustainability and resource efficiency.

Since the beginning of the European integration process until the present day the states have given up some significant elements of their sovereignty transferring an increasing number of authorities to the European institutions. The extended framework within which the rules of the European game are determined also exerts a considerable impact on the regions as integral units of the present-day complex states. Politically and economically powerful regions are more and more independent in the contemporary European political and economic space. This has created a distorted picture of 'Europe of the regions' where the regions and European institutions will establish direct contacts, making the role of states superfluous. In this paper, the author endeavors to offer a theoretical historical and philosophic frame for consideration of the attempts to overcome the antinomy of freedom and order both in the past and in the present, particularly analyzing the position and role of the regions in the European Union political and economic system.

Federalism is a theory which has largely affected the European integration process and it remains important today. From the financial crisis and the requests for the creation either of Eurobonds or of a unified banking sector, to the current health crisis and the request for a common health policy approach and a common recovery mechanism for the elimination of the negative economic and social consequences of the pandemic, the theoretical and empirical discussion about the direction that European integration should follow are yet active. In this essay we will firstly outline some basic aspects of the theory of federalism as well as a brief comparison with other theories and secondly, we conduct an analysis on the contemporary importance of federalism. Accordingly, an evaluation of the theory with real examples-challenges offers lucrative ground in order to reach some tentative conclusions on the current and future role of federalism to the European integration process.
