Background/Aim. Speech motor mechanisms play a crucial role in the process of demutization, due to the fact that they cover all the elements of the successive development of spech production movements leading to speech formation (socalled kinesthesia in speach). The aim of this study was to estimate the impact of perceptual motor actions on the cognitive process of reading in 130 students in regular schools and schools for the deaf and hard-of-hearing children in the Republic of Serbia. Methods. Kostic and Vladisavljevic test consisted of the ten levels weight was used for the assessment of reading speed. To assess understanding of text read by verbal responses, we used three-dimensional adapted reading test of Helene Sax. Results. The triage-articulation test for assessing reading speed (Kostic and Vladisavljevic?s test according to the weight of ten levels, revealed that students in regular schools statistically significantly faster read texts as compared to the deaf students. The results of the threedimensional adapted reading test of Helena Sax, show that the words learned by deaf children exist in isolation in their mind, ie, if there is no standard of acoustic performance for graphic image, in deaf child every word, printed or written, is just the sum of letters without meaning. Conclusion. There is a significant difference in text reading speed and its understanding among the children who hear and the deaf and hard of-hearing children. It is essential that in deaf and heard-of hearing children education, apart from the development of speech, parallelly use the concept of semantic processing in order to get each word by the fullness of its content and the possibility of expanding its meaning in a variety of assets.

In some respects, hard-of-hearing children experience the same difficulties as deaf children, whereas other challenges might be easier or more difficult to handle for the hard-of-hearing child than it would be for the deaf child. Research has revealed great variability in the language, academic, and psychosocial outcomes of hard-of-hearing children. Universal newborn hearing screening enables early identification and intervention for this group, which traditionally has been diagnosed rather late; however, best practices regarding the scope and content of early intervention have not yet been sufficiently described for hard-of-hearing children. This chapter summarizes the current knowledge concerning psychosocial development in hard-of-hearing children. Risk and protective factors, and their implications for early intervention, are discussed with a special emphasis on preschoolers.

Category: Ankle Introduction/Purpose: The standard for lateral ligament stabilization is direct repair of the ATFL by open or arthroscopic technique. The implications and necessity of repairing the CFL are not well understood. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of repairing the ATFL alone compared to repairing both the ATFL and CFL, in a biomechanical cadaver model. We hypothesized that repairing the CFL will substantially augment ankle and subtalar joint stability during weight-bearing ankle inversion compared to ATFL repair alone. Methods: Ten matched pairs of fresh frozen human cadaveric ankles were dissected to expose intact ATFL and CFL. Ankles were mounted to an Instron at 20° plantar flexion and 15° of internal rotation. Each ankle was loaded to body weight and then tested from 0 to 20° of inversion for three cycles; stiffness and torque were recorded, peak pressure and contact area were recorded using a calibrated Tekscan sensor system, and rotational displacement of the talus and calcaneus relative to the ankle mortise was recorded using a three-dimensional motion capture system. Ankles then underwent sectioning of ATFL and CFL and were randomly assigned to ATFL only repair using two arthroscopic Broström all-soft anchors, or combined ATFL and CFL repair. Testing was repeated after repair to 20° of inversion, then load-to-failure (LTF). Results: The predominant mode of failure after repair was at the tissue/suture. There were no instances of anchor pullout. There was an 11.7% increase in stiffness in combined repairs, and only a 1.6% increase in ATFL-only repairs. CFL failed at lower torque and rotation than the ATFL in combined repairs. There were strong correlations between intact stiffness and stiffness after repair (r=.74) and ATFL torque in LTF testing (r=.77), across both groups. There was no significant difference in peak pressure or contact area in the tibiotalar joint between the intact ankle and ATFL or combined repair. Conclusion: We found a greater increase in stiffness following combined ATFL and CFL repair compared to ATFL repair alone. This added stability is due to complimentary contributions of the CFL, not augmented LTF strength of the ATFL. Intact specimen stiffness correlated strongly with stiffness after repair and LTF torque, suggesting that a patient’s inherent tissue laxity or inelasticity is likely a meaningful predictor of strength after repair. Restoring the CFL plays a relevant role in lateral ligament repair, however sufficient time for ligament healing should be allowed before substantial inversion stresses are applied.

e15110 Background: IGRT for PC could potentially improve the therapeutic ratio by enhancing accuracy of delivery of radiation to the prostate gland. Our aim is to compare the treatment outcomes in terms of RT-related acute toxicities and PSA kinetics of PC patients (pts) undergoing radical intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) with or without image-guidance. Methods: A cohort of 21 consecutive pts treated by IGRT (I) from January 2010, when the IGRT system was introduced in our institution, was compared with an immediately precedent cohort of 21 pts receiving IMRT without image-guidance (Non-I). The prescription dose (76Gy in 38 fractions) and the treatment margins were the same between the 2 groups (gps). In the I gp, daily online verification and correction of treatment position was performed with reference to image registration of the daily pre-treatment on-board imaging with the corresponding digitally reconstructed radiographs, based on three-dimensional matching of three intra-prostatic fiducial markers. Androgen deprivation therapy was not used in both gps. Acute toxicities were scored weekly during the course of RT according to the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events Version 4.02. The pre- and the post-RT PSA within 6 months after completion of RT were obtained. The PSA halving time (PSAHT) was calculated by first order kinetics. Results: There was no statistically significant difference regarding the baseline clinical characteristics (age, PSA at diagnosis, Gleason score, T staging) between the gps. No grade 3 or 4 acute genitourinary (GU) or gastrointestinal (GI) toxicities was encountered in either gps. Acute grade 1 or 2 GI toxicities were significantly less frequent in the I gp (23.8% vs 81.0%, p=0.001), and their median duration of such toxicity were also significantly shorter (0.33 week vs 1.38 week, p=0.004).The frequencies of acute grade 1 or 2 GU toxicities were comparable between both gps (66.6% vs 81.0%, p=0.45).The I gp had a shorter median PSAHT than the non-I gp (3.36 week vs 5.49 week, p=0.09). Conclusions: IGRT is effective in reducing acute GI toxicities in treatment of PC, and may have more favorable PSA kinetics.

This paper presents a comprehensive study of the effect of shroud design in axial turbine aerodynamics. Experimental measurements and numerical simulations have been conducted on three different test cases with identical blade geometry and tip clearances but different shroud designs. The first and second test cases are representative of a full shroud and a nonaxisymmetric partial shroud geometry while the third test case uses an optimized partial shroud. Partial shrouds are sometimes used in industrial application in order to benefit from the advantage of shrouded configuration, as well as reduce mechanical stress on the blades. However, the optimal compromise between mechanical considerations and aerodynamic performances is still an open issue due to the resulting highly three-dimensional unsteady flow field. Aerodynamic performance is measured in a low-speed axial turbine facility and shows that there are clear differences between the test cases. In addition, steady and time resolved measurements are performed together with computational analysis in order to improve the understanding of the effect of the shroud geometry on the flow field and to quantify the sources of the resultant additional losses. The flow field analysis shows that the effect of the shroud geometry is significant from 60% blade height span to the tip. Tip leakage vortex in the first rotor is originated in the partial shroud test cases while the full shroud case presents only a weak indigenous tip passage vortex. This results in a significant difference in the secondary flow development in the following second stator with associated losses that varies by about 1% in this row. The analysis shows that the modified partial shroud design has improved considerably the aerodynamic efficiency by about 0.6% by keeping almost unchanged the overall weight of this component, and thus blade root stresses. The work, therefore, presents a comprehensive flow field analysis and shows the impact of the shroud geometry in the aerodynamic performance.

Purpose The present study aimed to evaluate the impact of vitrification on the viability of follicles using a three-dimensional (3D) in vitro culture. Methods Bovine ovarian tissue samples (n = 5) obtained from slaughterhouses were utilized. The cortex was cut into small fragments of 2 × 3 × 0.5 mm using a tissue slicer. From these fragments, secondary follicles were first isolated by mechanical and enzymatic methods, then encapsulated in alginate gel and individually cultured for 20 days. Additional fragments of the same ovarian tissue were vitrified in a solution containing 25% glycerol and 25% ethylene glycol. After warming, the follicles underwent the same follicular isolation process that was performed for the fresh follicles. Results A total of 61 follicles were isolated, 51 from fresh ovarian tissue, and 10 from vitrified tissue. After the culture, the vitrified and fresh follicles showed 20% and 43.1% survival rates respectively (p = 0.290), with no significant differences. At the end of the culture, there were no significant differences in follicular diameter between the vitrified (422.93 ± 85.05 µm) and fresh (412.99 ± 102.55 µm) groups (p = 0.725). Fresh follicles showed higher mean rate of antrum formation when compared with vitrified follicles (47.1% and 20.0% respectively), but without significant difference (p = 0.167). Conclusions The follicles were able to develop, grow and form antrum in the 3D system after vitrification, despite the lower results obtained with the fresh tissue.

Drama instruction is one of the methods recommended in EFL literature. This study aimed to investigate the impact of drama instruction on EFL fifth graders’ reading comprehension. It also explored the students’ and the teacher’s perceptions of the use of drama in reading lessons. A total of 74 randomly selected students participated in the study and formed the control group and the experimental group. The study followed the mixed quasi-experimental design. A pre- and posttest reading test was administered to examine the impact of drama on reading comprehension. A questionnaire was implemented to explore students’ perceptions of drama. Semi-structured interviews were also conducted to probe students’ and teacher’s perceptions of drama. The results were quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed. They showed no significant difference in reading comprehension between the control group and the experimental group. However, the experimental group performed better in the posttest than the control group although their mean scores in the pretest were lower. The participant teacher and students responded positively towards the use of drama in reading lessons. They reported that drama activities were exciting and made them love reading.

The author is a clinical psychologist whose entire career has been in the field of the education and the psychologic testing of children with impaired hearing. He discusses many of the special problems arising in the rearing of a child with a hearing loss, and gives a good deal of sound advice on a variety of subjects: importance of parental attitudes in child training, discipline, speech training, vocational selection, etc.

Issues regarding assessment of the deaf and hard-of-hearing (D/HH) child with developmental language disorder (DLD) have implications for the assessment of the child with DLD who is not D/HH. Of note are suggestions regarding literacy, the potential for semantic fluency assessment to contribute to the identification of DLD, the use of standardized protocols to support assessment at the conversational level, and the necessary skills of those completing assessments. Similarly, issues in assessment and identification of children with DLD who are not D/HH have implications for practice with children who are D/HH. These include the shift from exclusionary approaches to identification and recognition of co-occurring conditions, addressing the impact of development over time and considering the contribution of dynamic assessment. This chapter is a joint discussion of key items related to the assessment of deaf and hearing children with a developmental language disorder that were presented in Chapters 5.1 and 5.2.
