AbstractNear Killarney, Canada, three raised beaches of former Great Lakes stages have cultural material in circumstances indicating contemporaneity with the construction of the beaches 7000 B.C. and A.D. 1. The physical conditions demonstrating this contemporaneity are set forth in detail, with illustrations of artifacts in situ in gravels. The several components of two sites are distinguished, and a workshop with most of the artifacts in unfinished condition is described and illustrated. The geology, which involves Postglacial uplift of the Lake Huron basin along with rising and lowering levels, is fully outlined.

AbstractBetween 10,500 and 9000 cal yr BP, δ18O values of benthic ostracodes within glaciolacustrine varves from Lake Superior range from − 18 to − 22‰ PDB. In contrast, coeval ostracode and bivalve records from the Lake Huron and Lake Michigan basins are characterized by extreme δ18O variations, ranging from values that reflect a source that is primarily glacial (∼ − 20‰ PDB) to much higher values characteristic of a regional meteoric source (∼ − 5‰ PDB). Re-evaluated age models for the Huron and Michigan records yield a more consistent δ18O stratigraphy. The striking feature of these records is a sharp drop in δ18O values between 9400 and 9000 cal yr BP. In the Huron basin, this low δ18O excursion was ascribed to the late Stanley lowstand, and in the Lake Michigan basin to Lake Agassiz flooding. Catastrophic flooding from Lake Agassiz is likely, but a second possibility is that the low δ18O excursion records the switching of overflow from the Lake Superior basin from an undocumented northern outlet back into the Great Lakes basin. Quantifying freshwater fluxes for this system remains difficult because the benthic ostracodes in the glaciolacustrine varves of Lake Superior and Lake Agassiz may not record the average δ18O value of surface water.

Species–area relations of vascular plants and the effect of nesting colonies of gulls on plant species composition were investigated for 77 islands in Georgian Bay and Lake Huron in the Great Lakes region of Canada. The percentage of plant species classed as alien, annual, or biennial was significantly greater on islands with gull colonies. The slope of the species–area curve was significantly steeper on islands supporting gull colonies compared with islands lacking gull colonies. The expected decline in species richness with increased island remoteness was not detected statistically using multiple regression analysis. The difference in species–area slopes does not appear to reflect a lower propagule immigration rate to islands with gull colonies, because gulls are important in the dispersal of alien plant species to these islands. Larger islands with gull colonies tended to have richer floras than islands of similar size without gull colonies. It is suggested that on these larger islands the presence of gull colonies produces a gradient of soil nutrient and disturbance regimes, thus increasing habitat heterogeneity and species richness.

Abstract Barrier dams, traps, and lampricides are the techniques currently used by the Great Lakes Fishery Commission to control sea lampreys {Petromyzon marinug) in the Great Lakes. To augment these control techniques, a sterile-male-release research program was initiated at the Lake Huron Biological Station. Male sea lampreys were sterilized by intraperitoneal injection of the chemical sterilant P,P-bis(1-aziridinyl)-Nmethylphosphinothioic amide (bisazir). An analytical method was needed to quantitate the concentration of bisazir in water and to routinely verify that bisazir (>25 μg/L) does not persist in the treated effluent discharged from the sterilization facility to Lake Huron. A rapid, accurate, and sensitive liquid chromatographic (LC) method was developed for determining bisazir in water. Bisazir was dissolved in Lake Huron water; extracted and concentrated on a C18 solid-phase extraction column; eluted with methanol; and quantitated by reversed-phase LC using a Cis column, amobile phase of 70% water and 30% methanol (v/v), and UV detection (205 nm). Bisazir retention time was 7-8 min; total run time was about 20 min. Method detection limit for bisazir dissolved in Lake Huron water was about 15 μg/L. Recovery from Lake Huron water fortified with bisazir at 100 μg/L was 94% (95% confidence interval, 90.2-98.2%).

Archaeological accounts of the spread of agriculture tend to favor either (im)migration/demic diffusion or in situ development/stimulus diffusion. Having moved away from the early twentieth-century's community-wide migration model for Iroquoian origins in the Lower Great Lakes region and southern Ontario in particular, orthodox archaeological belief over the past half-century had come to place Northern Iroquoian speakers in the area since at least 2,000 years ago and likely much earlier. In what appear to be modified versions of the older migrationist arguments, contemporary thought within archaeology once more seems to allow that wholesale relocations were responsible for bringing farming into the region. It has been suggested, for example, that Northern Iroquoian speakers entered southern Ontario as recently as the early or middle centuries of the first millennium A.D. In this paper, I recount the routes this debate has taken and show that the appearance of maize (Zea mays) agriculture, alongside a few other materials, has come to be bound up with documenting the arrival of Northern Iroquoian-speaking communities. I conclude by reiterating the cautions advised by a number of researchers for how we read past ethnicity from archaeological materials and the role this plays in contemporary political discourse between First Nations and others.

Crystallization via particle attachment was used in a unified model for both classical and non-classical crystallization pathways, which have been widely observed in biomimetic mineralization and geological fields. However, much remains unknown about the detailed processes and driving mechanisms for the attachment. Here, we take calcite crystal as a model mineral to investigate the detailed attachment process using in situ Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) force measurements and molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that hydration layers hinder the attachment; however, in supersaturated solutions, ionic bridges are formed between crystal gaps as a result of capillary condensation, which might enhance the aggregation of calcite crystals. These findings provide a more detailed understanding of the crystal attachment, which is of vital importance for a better understanding of mineral formation under biological and geological environments with a wide range of chemical and physical conditions.

Satellite sensor systems for soil moisture measurements have been continuously evolving. The Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission represents one of the latest advances in this regard. Thus far, much of our knowledge of the accuracy of SMAP soil moisture over the Great Lakes region of North America has originated from evaluation studies using in situ data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service Soil Climate Analysis Network and/or the U.S. Climate Reference Network, which provide only several in situ sensor stations for this region. As such, these results typically underrepresent the accuracy of SMAP soil moisture in this region, which is characterized by a relatively large soil moisture variability and is one of the least studied regions. In this work, SMAP Level 2‒4 soil moisture products: SMAP/Sentinel-1 L2 Radiometer/Radar Soil Moisture (SPL2SMAP_S), SMAP Enhanced L3 Radiometer Soil Moisture (SPL3SMP_E), and SMAP L4 Surface and Root-Zone Soil Moisture Analysis Update (SPL4SMAU) are evaluated over the southern portion of the Great Lakes region using in situ measurements from Michigan State University’s Enviro-weather Automated Weather Station Network. The unbiased root-mean-square error (ubRMSE) values for both SPL4SMAU surface and root zone soil moisture estimates are below 0.04 m3 m−3 at the 36-km scale, with an average ubRMSE of 0.045 m3 m−3 (0.037 m3 m−3) for the surface (root-zone) soil moisture against the sparse network. The ubRMSE values for SPL3SMP_E a.m. (i.e., descending overpasses) soil moisture retrievals are close to or below 0.04 m3 m−3 at the 36-km scale, with an average ubRMSE of ~0.06 m3 m−3 against the sparse network. The average ubRMSE values are ~0.05‒0.06 m3 m−3 for high-resolution SPL2SMAP_S soil moisture retrievals against the sparse network, with the skill of the baseline algorithm-based soil moisture retrievals exceeding that of the optional algorithm-based counterparts. Clearly, the skill of SPL4SMAU surface soil moisture exceeds that of the SPL3SMP_E and SPL2SMAP_S soil moisture retrievals.

Ancient and modern marine carbonate hardgrounds offer unusual opportunities to study the evolution of communities from the Early Cambrian into the Holocene. Throughout this time the general physical conditions of a hardground community have been similar. The substrate is hard so sessile organisms must either attach to its surface, nestle in cavities, or bore into it for occupation. These organisms are thus preserved in situ. Since space is often the limiting physical resource, organisms must have ways of obtaining and defending it, and these competitive hierarchies are often preserved in the spatial relationships of the species. Scouring and/or burial in sediment usually marks the end of the brief habitation.
