Classical librarianship drowns in the sea of change. in the United States our profession had indicated a profound change -especially in the last 20 years. Until 1976, 15 schools or departments of librarianship had been closed, and the rest had undergone a serious transformation. During the last 20 years, library education became no more homogeneous as it was in the past. New educational programs show vast diversity. The scope of the mission of library services became enlarged. Type of students, ways of teaching had also indicated a substantial change. On the other hand, the librarian of today requires lifelong self­education.

Em Ciência da Informação, áreas de atuação distintas exigem profissionais distintos. Se por um lado, a formação generalista do bibliotecário lhe garante um amplo mercado de trabalho, por outro, a falta de especialização pode ser um obstáculo para uma vaga de emprego. Áreas como as Ciências da Saúde exigem competências não desenvolvidas na graduação, com raras exceções. Com o intuito de qualificar, capacitar e suprir defasagens dos cursos de Biblioteconomia e Ciência da Informação foi criado o Programa de Aprimoramento em Documentação e Informação em Ciências da Saúde, um curso de pós-graduação lato sensu, que atualmente encontra-se em fase de implantação e avaliação. AbstractIn Information Science different fields of work seeks for different professional backgrounds. If, on the one hand, the generalist background of the librarian assures him/her a broad labor market, on the other hand, the unskilled professionals may find difficulty to fill a vacant position. With a few exceptions, fields such as Health Sciences require a competence model not achieved in undergraduate courses. The Improvement Program in Documentation and Information on Health Sciences was implemented with the purpose to provide qualification and professional skills, and to fill the gap of academic courses in Library Science and Information Science. Currently, this program is in the process of being settled and evaluated.

Nowadays, information is one of the main resources for an individual’s development and wellbeing, therefore distributing and using information must be a top priority for society. This entails establishing strategies so people can learn to use this resource. Furthermore, scientific progress and present-day educational paradigms stress trans-disciplinary learning. Information and communication sciences are complementary by nature –one focusing on the medium and the other on the process– so there must be greater clarity and conceptual consistency in a number of key shared areas. This document is an effort, from the perspective of library science and information science, to identify some possible meeting-points between these disciplines, regarding the study and development of the necessary competencies to handle information adequately.La información se constituye, en la época actual, en uno de los principales recursos para el desarrollo y bienestar de los individuos, por lo que su distribución y aprovechamiento debe constituirse en una prioridad social. Por ello, es necesario establecer estrategias para que las personas aprendan a utilizar estos recursos. Por otra parte, el avance científico y los paradigmas educativos actuales hablan de la importancia de la transdisciplinaridad; las ciencias de la información y las de la comunicación son por naturaleza complementarias, una se enfoca al medio informativo y la otra al proceso comunicativo; es deseable, por ende, que exista una mayor claridad y consistencia conceptual en algunos temas de relevancia común. Este trabajo constituye un esfuerzo, desde la perspectiva de la bibliotecología y las ciencias de la información, para identificar algunos posibles puntos de encuentro entre estas disciplinas, en lo que respecta al estudio y desarrollo de las competencias necesarias para manejar adecuadamente la información.

The forgotten now concept of the scientific library by D.D. Ivanov, the theorist and practical expert of librarianship, was not approved by the scientific community in 1970’s, as his views differed significantly from those accepted in library science at that time. Since D.D. Ivanov distinguished two processes in library activities (collecting books and assisting the reader), he represented the scientific library not as a static formation (library-institution), but as a process (librarianship), associated with scientific work. Therefore, he considered the library work in the scientific library to be an “intrascientific” system promoting knowledge and development of science. He also urged to abandon the term “library” in favor of the term “library work”. However, the idea by D.D. Ivanov about the interconnectedness of science and library (he declared it one of the first in the domestic library science) is of doubtless scientific and historical interest for library scientists: on the one hand,  a clear idea of structure of the concept of “scientific library” is not yet developed; on the other hand, his  views are consistent with today’s interpretation of the concepts of library and science as social institutions.

Stromatoporoids are the principal framebuilding organisms in the patch reef that is part of the reservoir of the Normandville field. The reef is 10 m thick and 1.5 km2in area and demonstrates that stromatoporoids retained their ability to build reefal edifices into Famennian time despite the biotic crisis at the close of Frasnian time. The fauna is dominated by labechiids but includes three non-labechiid species. The most abundant species isStylostroma sinense(Dong) butLabechia palliseriStearn is also common. Both these species are highly variable and are described in terms of multiple phases that occur in a single skeleton. The other species described areClathrostromacf.C. jukkenseYavorsky,Gerronostromasp. (a columnar species), andStromatoporasp. The fauna belongs in Famennian/Strunian assemblage 2 as defined by Stearn et al. (1988).

(Ed. note:Encouraged by the success of the more informal approach in Christy's presentation, we tried an even more extreme experiment in this session, I-D. In essence, Kraft held the floor continuously all morning, and for the hour and a half afternoon session, serving as a combined Summary-Introductory speaker and a marathon-moderator of a running discussion on the line spectrum of cepheids. There was almost continuous interruption of his presentation; and most points raised from the floor were followed through in detail, no matter how digressive to the main presentation. This approach turned out to be much too extreme. It is wearing on the speaker, and the other members of the symposium feel more like an audience and less like participants in a dissective discussion. Because Kraft presented a compendious collection of empirical information, and, based on it, an exceedingly novel series of suggestions on the cepheid problem, these defects were probably aggravated by the first and alleviated by the second. I am much indebted to Kraft for working with me on a preliminary editing, to try to delete the side-excursions and to retain coherence about the main points. As usual, however, all responsibility for defects in final editing is wholly my own.)

Pecker:The topic to be considered today is the continuous spectrum of certain stars, whose variability we attribute to a pulsation of some part of their structure. Obviously, this continuous spectrum provides a test of the pulsation theory to the extent that the continuum is completely and accurately observed and that we can analyse it to infer the structure of the star producing it. The continuum is one of the two possible spectral observations; the other is the line spectrum. It is obvious that from studies of the continuum alone, we obtain no direct information on the velocity fields in the star. We obtain information only on the thermodynamic structure of the photospheric layers of these stars–the photospheric layers being defined as those from which the observed continuum directly arises. So the problems arising in a study of the continuum are of two general kinds: completeness of observation, and adequacy of diagnostic interpretation. I will make a few comments on these, then turn the meeting over to Oke and Whitney.

A new 24-inch/36-inch//3 Schmidt telescope, made by C. Zeiss, Jena, has been installed since 30 August 1962, at the N. Copernicus University Observatory in Toruń. It is equipped with two objective prisms, used separately, one of crown the other of flint glass, each of 5° refracting angle, giving dispersions of 560Å/mm and 250Å/ mm respectively.

Abstract Michael Tomasello explains the human sense of obligation by the role it plays in negotiating practices of acting jointly and the commitments they underwrite. He draws in his work on two models of joint action, one from Michael Bratman, the other from Margaret Gilbert. But Bratman's makes the explanation too difficult to succeed, and Gilbert's makes it too easy.

AbstractWe have developed a model for theH2OandOHevolution in a comet outburst, assuming that together with the gas, a distribution of icy grains is ejected. With an initial mass of icy grains of 108kg released, theH2OandOHproductions are increased up to a factor two, and the growth curves change drastically in the first two days. The model is applied to eruptions detected in theOHradio monitorings and fits well with the slow variations in the flux. On the other hand, several events of short duration appear, consisting of a sudden rise ofOHflux, followed by a sudden decay on the second day. These apparent short bursts are frequently found as precursors of a more durable eruption. We suggest that both of them are part of a unique eruption, and that the sudden decay is due to collisions that de-excite theOHmaser, when it reaches the Cometopause region located at 1.35 × 105kmfrom the nucleus.
