This article suggests that over recent decades Catalan literary criticism has paid too little attention to the aesthetic attributes of Catalan literature and emphasised the social, political and cultural at the expense of discussions of narrative poetics. Through an analysis of Montserrat Roig’s metaphorical use of the city in her first novel Ramona, adéu, I put forward the view that the aesthetic features of Catalan literature need to be re-claimed. This article provides a critical analysis of the aesthetic importance of Roig’s representation of the city in her first novel and argues that she uses Barcelona as a critical tool through which to explore questions of both female emancipation and aesthetic freedom. Following a detailed discussion of Roig’s descriptions of how her female characters interact with particular urban spaces, I examine how Roig makes subtle shifts in her semantic register during these narrative accounts when her prose moves into the realm of the poetic. I conclude that this technique enables us to read her accounts of urban space as metaphors for aesthetic freedom and are inextricably linked to her wider concerns on the importance of liberating Catalan literature from the discourse of political nationalism.

Abstract The purpose of this study is to discuss the originality of the Catalan literature at its beginnings in relation to the poetry of the Occitan troubadours, and to explain why some Catalans today do not feel connected to the Castilian heritage. The paper presents the Occitan-Catalan political and cultural relations in the time between 993 and 1213, with particular emphasis on the 12th century when the Great Occitan War took place. The historical Occitania at that time was divided into numerous principalities affected by constant internal struggles. That unstable political situation encouraged powerful neighbours – as the rulers from the House of Barcelona – to attain their domination over the region. The successful military and diplomatic engagements of the Catalan sovereigns allowed them to create a relatively homogeneoas Occitan-Catalan community based on cultural similarity and feudal dependence.

Resum: El present treball analitza comparativament els principals tòpics retòrics presents als pròlegs de textos hagiogràfics bizantins i catalans. El punt de partença és la consolidació del gènere hagiogràfic com a tal en la literatura grega tardo-antiga i d’època bizantina i la seua influència sobre el desenvolupament de l’hagiografia en Occident, primer en llatí i després en les llengües romàniques a partir de l’Edat Mitjana. En aquest sentit, podrem observar l’ús d’un mateix repertori de caràcter retòric per presentar i embellir el text i analitzarem l’explicació d’aquest fenomen i les perspectives d’estudi a explorar.    Paraules clau: hagiografia, literatura bizantina, literatura catalana, vides de sants.   Abstract: This article is aimed to compare the main rhetorical topoi of the prologues of both Byzantine and Catalan Hagiographical texts. The starting point is the consolidation of Hagiography as a literary genre in Late Antique Greek and Byzantine literature and its influence on the development of Hagiography in the West, first on Latin and then on Romance texts from the Middle Ages. Resum: A l’antiga Grècia i Roma els epitalamis actuaven com a preludi eròtic de la nit nupcial. Claudià, a l’antiguitat tardana, va tractar el motiu del desflorament com a pugna amoris amb lasciu refinament. A partir del Quattrocento italià, l’Europa moderna va reprendre amb profusió aquesta tradició laudatòria d’erotisme estilitzat amb cants consagrats a la unió de les famílies il·lustres. El poeta barroc Francesc Fontanella (1622-1682/83) va compondre quatre magnífics epitalamis dedicats a les noces d’un enigmàtic personatge: el ‘galant Alba’. Diversos estudis han intentat, sense èxit, desvelar-ne la identitat. En aquestes composicions, Fontanella va emprar un llenguatge refinat i metafòric per descriure gradualment els estadis que porten a la unió carnal entesa com a lluita amorosa: els versos, rics en imatges florals i minerals, s’han de reconvertir al seu sentit concret a través d’una doble lectura. L’estudi inclou l’edició crítica dels textos i la contextualització del cicle dins del corpus epitalàmic europeu, així com una argumentació sobre la possible identitat dels protagonistes. Paraules clau: literatura catalana moderna; poesia barroca; epitalami; Francesc Fontanella Abstract: In ancient Greece and Rome, epithalamia acted as an erotic prelude to the wedding night. In Late Antiquity, Claudian explored the theme of deflowering as pugna amoris with lascivious refinement. As of 15th century Italian poets, modern Europe recommenced this laudatory tradition of stylised eroticism with songs devoted to the union of illustrious families. The Baroque poet Francesc Fontanella (1622-1682/3) composed four magnificent epithalamia dedicated to the wedding of an enigmatic character: ‘gallant Alba’, of whom several studies have tried, unsuccessfully, to reveal his identity. In these compositions, Fontanella employed refined, metaphorical language to gradually describe the stages of carnal union understood as a love battle: the verses, rich in floral and mineral imagery, must be transformed into their particular meaning through double reading. The study includes the critical edition of the texts and a contextualisation of the series within the European corpus of epithalamia, as well as an argument on the possible identity of the protagonists. Keywords: Early modern Catalan literature; Baroque poetry; epithalamium; Francesc Fontanella

Resum: Curial e Güelfa (Milà-Nàpols, ca. 1445-1448), novel·la cavalleresca escrita en català i atribuïble al gran camarlenc del Nàpols d’Alfons el Magnànim, Enyego d’Àvalos, conté una suggerent càrrega culturalista (mites ovidians tergiversats satíricament; teofanies i decorats neoplatònics; remissions explícites i/o implícites Cèsar, Macrobi, Plató, Apuleu...), que no resulta en absolut supèrflua i prescindible, com argumentà algun crític del segle passat. Al contrari: la manera d’evocar-hi els clàssics i de re-presentar-los no s’explica sense considerar els contactes de l’hipotètic escriptor amb l’humanisme llombard i napolità. D’altra banda, el repertori de clàssics greco-llatins documentats en la variada biblioteca personal del mateix D’Àvalos, la segona més rica del sud d’Itàlia, evidencia la coincidència de gustos i lectures d’aquest amb l’anònim del Curial i convida a ratificar la referida atribució. Paraules clau: Curial e Güelfa, Enyego d’Àvalos, literatura catalana medieval, novel·la cavalleresca, cavalleria humanística.   Abstract: Curial e Güelfa (Milan-Naples, ca. 1445-1448), a chivalric romance written in Catalan an attributable to the great chamberlain in the Naples of Alfonso the Magnanimous, Enyego/Inico d’Àvalos, contains a suggestive cultural burden (Ovid’s myths satirically distorted; theophanies and Neo-platonic sets; explicit and/or implicit references to Caesar, Macrobius, Plato, Apuleius...), which is not absolutely superfluous nor dispensable, as some critic from the last century explained. Just the opposite: the way to recall the classics and re-present them cannot be explained without considering the contacts of the hypothetical writer with the Lombard and Neapolitan Humanism. On the other hand, the catalogue of Greek-Latin classics recorded in the varied personal library of D’Àvalos himself, the second richest in the south of Italy, demonstrates the coincidence of his taste and readings with the anonymous writer of the Curial and invites us to ratify the aforementioned attribution. Thirty years after the death of Franco, Catalan literature written in the various Catalan-speaking territories remains divided. This article analyses the causes of the fragmentation of Catalan literature during the years of political transition and reflects upon the liquidationist obstinacy of Spanish nationalism and the weakness—possibly congenital—of Catalan culture.

The publisher Edicions del Mall made the first attempt to translate the most important poets of the 20th century into Catalan language, and suffered a clear setback, as this happened after 35 years of dictatorship in which Catalan literature was not allowed to be published officially. The publisher tried to recover normality within the literary tradition. In this context, they published the translation of an author of Lemberg, who had emigrated to Palestine and who writes in Hebrew, David Rokeah. The editor was Eduard Feliu, a prestigious translator of Hebrew and also of English and who had already translated to poets such as W.H. Auden in that same collection.The relevance already acquired by the publisher and by the translator at the time of publishing Rokeah facilitates the reception of this unknown author by the general public. The way in which the publisher is presented, as well as the para-texts, the translator’s work and the use of specific language for translation indicate that we are dealing with a case of literary translation in which the invisibility not only of the translator is fictitious, since the translated text must respond to a more literary-social action and must have a specific role within the new literary system.
