Abstract This paper summarizes results from a recent program of tire-vehicle system research, using simulation techniques to identify the influence of tire characteristics on the vehicle response functions of yaw rate and lateral acceleration. Tire characteristics such as cornering stiffness, cornering stiffness-wheel load dependency, self-aligning torque, and dynamic tire behavior were varied with respect to a control tire. Computer simulations of vehicles undergoing a steering wheel pulse input were carried out using ADAMS full vehicle models and the Magic Formula tire model. Frequency responses were obtained from these vehicle handling simulations. The Four Parameter Evaluation Method of Lateral Transient Response was used to judge the vehicle handling performance. The influences of tire characteristic properties on the vehicle lateral transient response are explained by this method.

Vehicle’s steering wheel angle pulse input performance was an representative test of handling and stability, it characterizes vehicle’s handling and stability by the transient response of the steering wheel angle pulse input. Taking a car for example, in the ADAMS software, vehicle dynamics model was established. According to GB/T6323.3—94 standards, the steering wheel angle pulse input virtual test was carried out, and then applied the QC/T 480—1999 limit vehicle handling and stability indices and assessment methods to evaluate the results of the simulation, the result is 66.2247 points, among that, the resonant peak level is 36.0973 points, indicating the vehicle's steering transient response ability is poor, should be improved.

This paper uses AMESim software to establish simulation model of SGA170 mine truck full hydraulic steering system, and validates the correctness of the proposed model. Through the joint simulation, vehicle steady circular test, double lane change test and steering wheel angle input test are verified. By changing the initial alignment parameters of front axle, vehicle handling performance are tested through the same simulation test, and yaw velocity, and the curves of lateral acceleration and vehicle roll angle describing vehicle handling stability are obtained, which provides a reference for the design and improvement of the similar mine truck selection.

Accurate full vehicle handling prediction can be used to evaluate the vehicle dynamic performance. This paper presents the prediction and correlation of full vehicle handling with ADAMS/Car. After building the initial model, major flexible component, steering friction and damping was introduced to optimize the model that makes the model much more accurate. The model will be used to run four major vehicle handling events; the predicted results are compared with measured data. The correlation includes time history of steering wheel angle, steering torque, lateral acceleration, side slip angle, roll, yaw etc. It also includes the derivates such as understeer gradients, steering gradients, side slip gradients, roll gradients etc. It is shown that good correlations are obtained in handling;

The objective of this study was to develop a product evaluation method applicable to virtual prototypes and to apply the method to automobile interior design. Considering that virtual reality-based product prototypes could represent design alternatives comparable to physical prototypes, prototypes developed in virtual reality environments were employed as design alternatives. After a procedure to evaluate virtual prototypes was developed specifically for a virtual reality environment, the procedure was applied to the problem of automobile interior design. 34 subjects evaluated 32 different virtual prototypes generated from the combination of design element variations. Four categories of subjective impression were used to evaluate the 32 virtual prototypes: luxuriousness, comfort, harmoniousness, and controllability. ANOVA and multiple linear regression analysis were performed to specify design elements critical to customer preference and to interpret the relationship between design elements and subjective impressions. As the result, the shapes of frontal area including crash pad and center fascia, door trim and steering wheel were selected as important variables related to subjective impressions. The proposed evaluation method for virtual prototypes could be utilized as an alternative way of identifying the relationship between subjective impressions and design elements.

Ergonomics is an important validation content in vehicle product development. The traditional evaluation method of ergonomics adopts physical mockups or prototypes, which is very costly, and is inconvenient to modify, and usually cause prolonged development cycle-time. In this paper, in conjunction with enterprise’s requirements, an ergonomic validation equipment system, which has adjustable main parts, was developed. Firstly, requirements were analyzed, and target model cars ranges were determined, and ergonomic contents which can be validated using this equipment were clarified. The packaging characteristic of the passenger car was analyzed, and the reference fiducial marks system used for packaging design were determined. Based on the requirement of occupant accommodation, anthropometries of target population were statistically analyzed. By using revised SAE J1517 H-Point curves models, the drivers’ seating space was designed, as well as the requirement of the driver seat track travel. Based on the analysis of packaging data of passenger cars, and considering the possible changes, controls such as steering wheel, pedals, sticks, etc., were packaged.

Abstract Much progress has been made over recent years in understanding many aspects of driver-vehicle interactions, for example, linked to ergonomics/comfort of the cabin, influence of improved safety systems, interactions with ITS systems etc. However, in more dynamic situations, similar levels of understanding have not been achieved. Such dynamic events range from whole body motions such as vehicle handling and ride to component behaviour including, in particular, steering wheel feel and gearshift quality.

It is very important to simulate driver's manipulation for people - car - road closed loop simulation system. In this paper, the driver model is divided into two parts, linear vehicle model is used to simulate the driver's driving experience, and closed-loop feedback is used to characterize the driver's emergency feedback. The lateral acceleration of vehicle is used as feedback in closed loop control. Simulation results show that the smaller lateral acceleration requires the less closed-loop feedback control. The driver model can accurately track the target path, which can be used to simulate the manipulation of the driver. The driver model can be used for people - car - road closed loop simulation to evaluate vehicle handling stability.

In this paper, we proposed a method of monitoring human driver by reconstructing trajectories which transportation vehicle followed. For safety and management of logistic transportation, it is important to monitor the states of driving behavior through the whole course of path. Since many accidents occur due to the reckless driving of the driver every year, continuous monitoring of the status of commercial vehicles is needed for safety through the entire path from start point to the destination. To monitor the reckless driving, we tried to monitor the trajectory of the vehicle by using vehicle's lateral acceleration signal. Using the correlation between steering angle and lateral acceleration, we could find the relationship between steering angle and acceleration, and finally it is possible to estimate the global direction of vehicle maneuvering. We conducted experiments to find the history of vehicle position on the curved road using Kalman Filter, and classified steering wheel condition (over-steering, and under-steering). The method is applied to central safety management system for safety control of vehicles transporting toxic gases.

In present work, the distribution of electric field strength on the surface of work piece was analyzed through ANSYS and theoretical equation. Moreover, the attractive force acting on particles that disperses in ER polishing fluid was calculated. A series of basic experiments were conducted, it is aimed to find out the effective process parameters on the surface roughness using the work piece as electrode. Vehicle handling directional stability has been more and more important, experiments for steering wheel corner step input response, steering oil tank response property, steady state turning and steering angle of all steering wheels were conducted in this paper, the experimental results show that multi-wheel steering system can fulfill its function very well and reach target angle, it provides a new method for researching for the vehicle handling directional stability.
