A heat transfer and solidification model of slab continuous casting process was developed, and the nail-shooting experiments were carried out to verify and improve the prediction accuracy. The comparison between the simulation and the measurements results showed that, there exists difference between the model predicted liquid core length and the calculated liquid core length according to the measurement results of the solidification shell thickness. In the present study, the value of constant a in the heat transfer coefficient calculation formula was corrected through back-calculation, results showed that, the suitable value of a is 31.650, 33.468 and 35.126 when the casting speed is 0.8m·min-1, 0.9m·min-1 and 1.0m·min-1 respectively, which can meet the liquid core length of the measurement results. The developed model built a foundation for the application of dynamic secondary cooling, and dynamic soft reduction.

Based on the conception of integration and optimization of process, mechanical, electric and hydraulic system, the advanced CISDI packaged soft-reduction technology for slab continuous casting with our full intellectual property rights has been developed successfully, which consists of the metallurgical process models with strong function and advanced arithmetic, the segment equipments with optimized structure and high strength, the basic automation program with full inspection and control function, the reliable stable hydraulic system and automatic system. It contains two control modules, viz., the static soft-reduction function & dynamic soft-reduction function, and three gap-adjustment modes, viz., the position-control mode, pressure-control mode & soft-clamping mode. From the opinions of equipment protection and production safety, some functional mechanism such as segment ordinal action, gap self-adapting adjustment, forced protection for breakout prediction, and etc., have been adopted. The whole system has been put into the industrial practice on the No.6 slab caster of Liusteel China, which has shown the smooth caster operation, the steady running of system, and the good metallurgical effects on improvement of internal quality of slab like center segregation and center porosity. The industrial application of CISDI soft-reduction technology has brought the rising of output proportion of high-class steel grades and the increasing of qualified rate for slab quality inspection, which has resulted in the distinct economic benefits for Liusteel group.

A mathematical model coupled with electromagnetic field has been developed to simulate the transient turbulence flow and initial solidification in a slab continuous casting mold under different electromagnetic stirring (EMS) currents and casting speeds. Through comparing the magnetic flux density, flow field with measured results, the reliability of the mathematical model is proved. The uniform index of solidified shell thickness has been introduced to judge the uniformity of the solidified shell. The results show that a horizonal recirculation flow has been generated when EMS is applied, and either accelerated or decelerated regions of flow field are formed in the liquid pool. Large EMS current and low casting speed may cause the plug flow near the mold narrow face and a suitable EMS current can benefit to the uniform growth of solidified shell. Meanwhile, an industrial test exhibits that EMS can weaken the level fluctuation and number density of inclusion. Overall, a rational EMS current range is gained, when the casting speed is 1.2 m/min, the rational EMS current is 500–600 A.

An inner-outer coupled cooling technology of molten steel for 1240×200mm slab continuous casting, that is to set an inner cooler—U shape pipes in the mold, is put forward in order to enhance the efficiency of transmitting heat and improve inner structure of billet. The flow status and solidification status of molten steel under coupling flow field and temperature field in inner-outer coupled cooling mold are simulated by using fluid dynamics software, and compare with those in traditional mold. It is found that setting inner cooler in the mold can make molten steel flow status even, which is favorable to floating up of the inclusion, quickening the solidification of steel liquid and improving the quality of billet.
