On the Island of Vulcano (Aeolian Archipelago, Italy) the temperatures of fumarole emissions, have ranged from about 700 °C to the boiling point. Since the end of the last eruption (1890 A.D.), many periods of increased heating of hydrothermal systems, underlying the La Fossa area have been identified, but an eruptive condition has not yet been reached. The time variation of the high temperature fumaroles has been tracked by the network of sensors located at a few discrete sites on the summit area of La Fossa cone. The same continuous monitoring network has been working for more than 30 years. The time series shows that a natural cyclic modulation has repeated after almost 20 years, and its periodicity yet has to be discussed and interpreted. The statistical approach and the spectral analysis could provide an objective evaluation to reveal the timing, intensity, and general significance of the thermodynamic perturbations that occurred in the hydrothermal circuits of La Fossa caldera, during the study period. The continuous monitoring data series avoid unrealistic interpolations and allow promptly recognizing changes, which perturb the hydrothermal circuits, highlighting—possibly in near real time—the transient phases of energy release from the different sources (hydrologic/magmatic).

New experimental evidence of self-motion of a confined active suspension is presented. Depositing fresh semen sample in an annular shaped microfluidic chip leads to a spontaneous vortex state of the fluid at sufficiently large sperm concentration. The rotation occurs unpredictably clockwise or counterclockwise and is robust and stable. Furthermore, for highly active and concentrated semen, richer dynamics can occur such as self-sustained or damped rotation oscillations. Experimental results obtained with systematic dilution provide a clear evidence of a phase transition towards collective motion associated with local alignment of spermatozoa akin to the Vicsek model. A macroscopic theory based on previously derived self-organized hydrodynamics models is adapted to this context and provides predictions consistent with the observed stationary motion.

In the Vicsek Model (VM), self-driven individuals try to adopt the direction of movement of their neighbors under the influence of noise, thus leading to a noise-driven order–disorder phase transition. By implementing the so-called Vectorial Noise (VN) variant of the VM (i.e. the VM-VN model), this phase transition has been shown to be discontinuous (first-order). In this paper, we perform an extensive complex network study of VM-VN flocks and show that their topology can be described as highly clustered, assortative, and nonhierarchical. We also study the behavior of the VM-VN model in the case of "frozen flocks" in which, after the flocks are formed using the full dynamics, particle displacements are suppressed (i.e. only rotations are allowed). Under this kind of restricted dynamics, we show that VM-VN flocks are unable to support the ordered phase. Therefore, we conclude that the particle displacements at every time-step in the VM-VN dynamics are a key element needed to sustain long-range ordering throughout.

In order to research dynamic network astringency reaching uniformity, this paper perfects the Vicsek model and puts forward improving dynamic network astringency efficiency by weighted model. We prove that the convergence rate of weighted model is faster than the classic Vicsek model and it can optimize dynamic network.

According to its inner property, a crisis in the financial market can be considered as a collective behavior phenomenon. Through the prism of collective behavior, the crisis does not happen if the companies are independent of each other. In this work, cooperative movement processes in a stock market are investigated in a manner similar to that Vicsek first described collective behavior for self-propelled entities. To this end, a phase space is defined as the one in which the return of volume of transactions versus return of price is represented with each share in each day corresponding to a unique point in the space. The findings of the observation show that during times of crisis, the phase space is limited with the vector velocity of shares in the same direction. In contrast, on a regular day, the phase space is entirely accessible, with vector velocity aligned randomly. Moreover, in line with the Vicsek model, an order parameter is introduced, which evaluates the cooperative effects for the shares so that the higher the value of this parameter, the stronger the collective behavior of the shares.

The present study investigates how combined information from audition and vision impacts group-level behavior. We consider a modification to the original Vicsek model that allows individuals to use auditory and visual sensing modalities to gather information from neighbors in order to update their heading directions. Moreover, in this model, the information from visual and auditory cues can be weighed differently. In a simulation study, we examine the sensitivity of the emergent group-level behavior to the weights that are assigned to each sense modality in this weighted composite model. Our findings suggest combining sensory cues may play an important role in the collective behavior and results from the composite model indicate that the group-level features from pure audition predominate.
