In 2000, Turkey had 1.5 million university students at 71 universities, whereas today, it has a much broader field of higher education with a university student population of over seven million at more than 200 universities. Although this quantitative expansion has brought some advantages, it has also created several problems, the most significant of which have emerged in terms of "quality". Whether quality increases in parallel with this expansion is an essential issue to consider. This paper emphasizes that HE institutions need to focus on "competition" to support the quantitative expansion in the field of Turkish HE with qualitative improvement. For this purpose, first, the state of the Turkish HE was overviewed from past to present. Next, the importance of "competition" for Turkish HE was highlighted and the two fundamental theories of competition were discussed by reviewing the related literature. Finally, a theoretical model based on the factors obtained through an assessment of how these theories can be applied to HE was presented.

No teaching method has evolved as much as distance education, in the state of Amazonas this would not be different, especially in higher education. Distance Education is a modality where the student is separated from the teacher and uses several communication technologies around all his learning. The methods used were bibliographic, documentary and quantitative. The researched environment was the capital city of Manaus and the municipality of Maués, with the application of the closed questionnaire aimed at higher education students. Our objective was to question certain nuances as their benefits and challenges for those who study Distance Education in the different locations of the State of Amazonas. The result was the realization that among its many advantages in the execution of education, time is considered the main one, and the loss of deadlines its greatest disadvantage, besides the concept of distance education is already well known by university students. Thus, it is well known that with the passing of time and with the progress of the state's modernization, distance education is gradually becoming the most practical means of teaching.

Nowadays, there are several phenomenons of suicide in-between university students whom are doing their thesis in Indonesia. One of the sources of suicide is emotional distress. Emotional distress is an uncomfortable state which can cause several lose, usually marked by depression and/or anxiety symptoms. There exist a few anti-stress variables to help coping process toward emotional distress, two of which are self-esteem and locus of control. This experiment’s goal is to figure out the state of the three variables on university students currently doing their thesis, while figuring out the relations of the anti-stress variables to emotional distress in the process of doing so. The participants in this experiment is 163 university students from X University currently doing their thesis, with age between 20-24 years old. From the data analysis, there are two conclusions. First, emotional distress is higher in university student doing thesis than common individual. Second, emotional distress can be predicted by self-esteem; furthermore, self-esteem is predicted by locus of control. The experiment is hoped to be able to provide insight in preventing emotional distress, specifically in university student struggling with their thesis. In 2015, South African university student protests drew critical attention to the state of higher education in the country. Newspaper reports of the student protests were pervasive. Reports of the violence that characterised parts of the protests dominated the news despite the students’ impact on the positive changes in higher education. Using a thematic analysis, this article interrogates student representation in newspapers from the inception of the protests to the end of the 2015 academic year. Four themes were identified: students as destructive vandals, violators of the rights of others, law-breakers, and agents of transformation. Results indicate that newspaper reports of the violence overshadowed reports of the positive changes that the student protestors catalysed, and in so doing, newspaper reports during this time delegitimised the students as agents of change.

In a highly technological post-industrial society the quality of education is an important factor in providing such a level of life and professional competency of a person that would satisfy both the demands of an individual and the state. The quality of the whole higher education is influenced by the quality of students' knowledge which is acquired at educational classes. Development of studactive classes has brought forward the problem of research of their efficiency, in particular in the aspect of potential quality of knowledge. The results of the experiment are outlined, the main aim of which was to identify the effect of studactive classes on knowledge quality of university students. Monitoring of quality of students' knowledge at studactive classes is realized. It is revealed that students who were taught in a studactive way have better features of knowledge quality (fullness, deepness, system character, operative character and flexibility) comparing with those who were taught in a traditional way. It is proved that knowledge quality of university students can be improved through implementing studactive classes into the pedagogical process. The study was conducted in Ukraine.

Introduction: The current COVID-19 pandemic has sequelae reverberating around Malaysia, particularly in university students, as Malaysian university students are isolated in their university campuses in semi-quarantine status. This article seeks to review the existing literature on the specialized issue of university student-related psychological sequelae of COVID-19, and seeks to offer some recommendations through the process. Methods: Existing literature demonstrates that COVID-19 has affected university students psychosocially, with the rate of anxiety and depression markedly increased. There have been significant alterations of lifestyle related to education, in accordance with the new normal, resulting in isolation and feelings of disengagement with education. Moreover, with the current uncertainties regarding their studies and possible financial depression postpandemic, the future is deeply worrying and will adversely affect their mental health. Results: Quantitatively, recent findings indicate 33.3% of the undergraduates in a higher education institution are noted to be in stress. Therefore, multiple interventions have been implemented; a customized ultra-brief psychological module, an online tele psychiatry hotline (COVID Cares) and tele-counselling, which have received universally positive feedback. Conclusion: In conclusion, the review demonstrates that undergraduates’ psychological health is an aspect that needs urgent attention as it is not merely limited to the fear of COVID-19, but also related to the social aspects of the pandemic. Multiple interventions have been seen to be efficacious in reducing the psychological sequelae.

The article discusses the problem of the formation of the design culture of a university student in conjunction with project activities. The urgency of the problem is determined by the analysis of the state of higher education in the preparation of students of construction specialties. The authors of the research of scientific views on the problems of design culture have proposed their own interpretation of this concept, which consists in the fact that the design culture of a student at a technical university is an integrative characteristic of a person that implies stable values, the ability to analyze and predict the design process, rationally solving professional problems.

Abstract Since 2011, millions of Syrian people have had to leave their country and seek shelter in neighbouring countries and in Europe. Forced migration or displacement creates multiple vulnerabilities while trying to settle in a new environment. Socioeconomic, cultural and psychological vulnerabilities hinder them from participating actively in society. Higher education is one of the main ways that refugees and displaced people cling to hope for a better life. Their access to and participation in higher education has been a challenging route for many reasons both for themselves and also for the higher education systems and universities in their host countries. Turkey has a unique place in regard to Syrian refugees. It hosts the largest refugee population in the world with 3.6 million Syrians and 500,000 asylum seekers from other countries, such as Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Turkey has a young population with the 5–17 age group comprising 21% of the population, but the Syrian population is much younger as its rate is 30%. Turkey is also the country with the largest student population in the European Higher Education Area. The incomparable magnitude of the situation, among others, plays a crucial role in developing new integration policies. In spite of the ongoing difficulties and challenges, the past nine years proved a success story in protection, social cohesion and integration of these newcomers. Turkey has been suffering from some challenges, such as a supply and demand imbalance in higher education. Demographic factors, shortcomings of the higher education system and the unemployment rate among university graduates have been some long-term challenges for Turkish higher education. Moreover, a common misconception in public opinion, that Syrian refugees are admitted to Turkish universities without fulfilling the requirements, adds new challenges for future policies. Both the sheer number of migrants and also the emergency of the situation during this migration flow necessitated some action to be taken in the area of higher education. In a country like Turkey, where there is high competition between students to pass the nationwide university selection exam each year, encouraging Syrian students to access higher education seems to be an area for discussion. This paper is based on the fieldwork of research conducted in the context of the Hopes-MADAD project entitled “Elite Dialogue II- Dialogue with Syrian Refugees in Turkey through Syrian Academics and Students” in 2019. The main research subject is which types of vulnerabilities Syrian university students face, and how they can integrate into society in Turkey. New approaches and definitions are needed to touch the actual needs of the refugees to be actively involved into society. Nevertheless, research on the higher education practices of vulnerable groups in general, and of Syrian students in particular, is largely missing.

The day-to-day activities of a higher education institution usually involve the implementation of its institutional mandate. The achievement of the organizational objective in the direction of its Roadmap is also a common priority. It is misleading that the administration lies only on the shoulder of the President of the State College as the chief manager and head of the institution. The administration also takes place in the institution, however, as soon as the staff enters the institution. Institutional administration by the President of the State College is also based on guiding principles and philosophical administrative thought. This philosophy will be explored in this paper and will be interpreted through a well-managed higher education institution. This paper will provide an explanation of the philosophical administrative thought of the President of Bulacan Agricultural State College in the field of institutional administration. This paper will also generate a philosophic/theoretical model that will describe the current philosophy as the president, being in the top management of the organization, practicing leadership and management at the state college.

The European Higher Education Area has marked a milestone in Higher Education. Consequently, teaching methodologies have experienced several transformations and their focus has turned to the incorporation of ICT in socio-educational environments. Thus, it can be stated that digital competences development is a paramount element for university students’ training, as they need to be digitally competent. This study explores the degree of knowledge and training about digital competences that students pursuing undergraduate or postgraduate studies in Educational Sciences have. The questionnaire "University Student’ Basic Digital Competences 2.0" (COBADI/ Trademark 2970648) was applied to students of Early Years Education, Primary Education, Social Education and postgraduates of the Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from the Universities of Seville and Huelva (Southwestern Spain). Results show that digital competence in university students needs to be improved. There is, therefore, a definite need for transversal and organized training allowing students to master digital contexts efficiently.
