Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the inter-relationship of dimensions for consumer-based brand equity and brand loyalty with customer satisfaction as a mediator for oral care segment with special reference to Delhi and connecting areas. Design/methodology/approach For achieving the objective of this study, the theoretical model was tested through structural equation modelling. Research scales from the literature were modified for suitability. Data were collected from 250 respondents. Findings The results indicate that for the oral care segment, customer satisfaction is significantly related to the perceived quality, brand trust, perceived value of cost and lifestyle congruence. Moreover, customer satisfaction partially mediates the relationship of perceived quality and perceived value of cost with brand loyalty, whereas it fully mediates the relationship of lifestyle congruence and brand trust with brand loyalty. Thus, even for low-involvement products, consumer purchases are based on the attributes of the brand rather than being merely habitual. Originality/value The literature supports the direct influence of brand equity on brand loyalty. However, no other study has investigated the mediating role of customer satisfaction on the relationship between brand equity and brand loyalty for low-involvement products.

Tourist engagement in marketing activities for destinations has been seen as a new driving force for the sustainable development of such destinations and as an effective way to improve their brand equity. Based on the theory of value co-creation and the theory of consumer-based brand equity for destinations, this paper examines the antecedents of brand engagement and the causal paths among them and compares the estimated values of different paths with brand image, brand awareness, and brand quality as the independent variables; brand value and brand trust as the mediating variables; and brand engagement as the dependent variable, taking Shandong Province as an example. The final results show that brand image, brand awareness, and brand quality are all key antecedents of brand engagement; however, they play different roles. The total effect of brand quality is the largest, the total effect of brand awareness follows, and the total effect of brand image is the smallest. Furthermore, the mediating effect of brand value is larger than the mediating effect of brand trust. The results provide empirical support for promoting the management of brand equity for similar destinations and encouraging tourists to participate in value co-creation activities.

Sales promotion is known for providing additional benefits to the consumers and these benefits may have an impact on the development of consumer-based brand equity. Although previous studies have reported a positive influence of sales promotion on brand equity, but the impact of sales promotion’s benefits (i.e., hedonic and utilitarian benefits) on brand equity is less understood. This study examined the possible influence of sales promotion’s hedonic and utilitarian benefits on four components of brand equity (i.e., brand awareness, brand association, perceived quality and brand loyalty). A model is proposed to show the relations between sales promotion’s benefits and component of brand equity. This study includes a sample of 265 consumers of fast-moving consumer goods from Madhya Pradesh state in India. A covariance based structure equation modelling technique was used for data analysis and interpretation. Research findings revealed that the utilitarian benefit of sales promotion has maximum impact on brand loyalty, while the hedonic benefit of sales promotion has maximum impact on brand association. It provides a way of utilizing the benefits of sales promotion to create and support brand equity. Hedonic benefits of sales promotion can be utilized to make consumers associated with the brand, while utilitarian benefits of sales promotion can be utilized to enhance a repeat purchase of the brand.
