Temperature-dependent domain configurations were studied for both unpoled and poled [110]C-oriented 0.63Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–0.37PbTiO3 (PMN–0.37PT) single crystals by polarized light microscopy (PLM).

Pyrene single crystals have been grown from zone refined material by sublimation and from the melt. The absorption edge has been measured for thick and thin crystals at room temperature. Thin crystals have been successfully cooled below the phase transition temperature (123 °K) without cracking. The sharp absorption peak at 376 nm vanishes at this temperature while the fluorescence spectrum remains unchanged. Using polarized light below 50 °K, a band with a maximum at 410 nm appears whose intensity increases with decreasing temperature. It is concluded that this band is due to ground-to-excimer state absorption in the ground state equilibrium distance of the pyrene molecules. The consequences of this finding for excimer-exciton transport is discussed.

The electronic absorption spectra of single crystals of toluene, dibenzyl, diphenylmethane, and biphenyl have been photographed at 20 °K. using polarized light in the range 3000 to 2500 Å. The fluorescence spectrum of biphenyl has also been examined. This is the first time that the excited states of biphenyl analogous to the B2u state of benzene have been observed. The main features of the spectra are similar for all four compounds, and the differences may be understood in terms of the weak coupling between the benzene rings of the "double molecules".

RE2Ti2O7 (RE = Y, Yb, Ho, Er) pyrochlores are very interesting as potential candidates for host materials for applications in transition-metal ions lasers. Y2Ti2O7 crystals were grown by the optical floating zone (OFZ) method. The shape of the growth interface is of paramount importance for the growth of single crystals. As striation and the growth interface have the same shape, we observed the striations in as-grown crystals under polarized light. The degree of overheating of the molten zone influences the shape of the growth interface. An increase of power supplied to the molten zone combined with a decrease of both, thermal conductivity and the amount of heat dissipated by the seed-rod, causes an increase in the degree of overheating of the floating zone. Under a high degree of overheating, the interface of the crystal grown is less convex, with smaller curvature. With the speed of rotation of these crystals decreasing from 30 to 7 rpm, the curvature of striations decreases and the shape of the growth interface changes from convex to less convex, and finally to concave.
