In a field study, three equally sized sales teams used one of three head-sets—left, right, both ears—for a day's selling of insurance by telephone. This had no effect on sales In a retrospective study of records, daily sales performance including the percentage conversion rate for sales divided by the number of calls and the number and duration of calls was related to preference for type of head-set. Sales were markedly influenced by the choice of head-set. People who chose to wear the left earpiece significantly out-sold the others wearing right and stereohead-sets. Neither the number of incoming calls nor the time spent on the telephone were influenced by the choice of head-set. When sales are analysed in terms of individual differences in personal preference for type of head-set, those who chose the left ear had an advantage. Forced use of the left, versus right ear or both ears for one day had no effect.

In this field study, the impacts of influent loadings and drying-wetting cycles on N2O emission in a subsurface wastewater infiltration (SWI) system were investigated. N2O emitted under different operation conditions were quantified using static chamber and gas chromatograph techniques. N2O conversion rate decreased from 6.6 ± 0.1% to 2.7 ± 0.1% with an increase in hydraulic loading (HL) from 0.08 to 0.24 m3/m2·d. By contrast, N2O conversion rate increased with increasing pollutant loading (PL) up to 8.2 ± 0.5% (PL 4.2 g N/m2·d) above which conversion rate decreased, confirming that N2O production was under the interaction of nitrification and denitrification. Taking into consideration the pollutants (chemical oxygen demand (COD), NH4+-N, NO3−-N and total nitrogen (TN)) removal ratio and N2O emission, optimal loading ranges and drying-wetting modes were suggested as HL 0.08–0.12 m3/m2·d, PL 3.2–3.7 g N/m2·d and 12 h:12 h, respectively. The results revealed that in SWI systems, conversion ratio of influent nitrogen to N2O could be between 4.5% and a maximum of 7.0%.

Abstract Background Multi Drug Resistance (MDR) Tuberculosis (TB) is a global risk. Several suboptimal results were noticed which resulted to introduction of a standardised short regimen of 9-12 to optimise favourable outcomes. This new intervention has not been evaluated for effectiveness since inception in the Eastern Cape Province. Objective: T o evaluate multidrug resistant tuberculosis conversion rate following initiation on short regimen. Methods A retrospective study using a descriptive design was used to collect data from conveniently sampled 71 documents at Nkqubela TB and Duncan Village Day hospitals. Data were collected using a self-designed structured questionnaire and analysed using Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24. Results Sixteen percent (n=19) of 71 records had no consecutive smear results. Demographic findings showed that the majority of the affected age group was between the ages of 36-45 years in both genders (34.7%, n=47) with males being highly affected more than females. The majority of participants were unemployed (51.7%), people living with HIV/AIDS (62.7%), use alcohol and smoking. Conversion rate was 68, 5%. Conclusion There is a need to review EDR web to accommodate sputum results irrespective of TB treatment start date. An extensive, ongoing counselling, support and health education needs to be provided for patients and families until the completion of treatment to emphasize the importance of monthly sputum collection and importance of treatment adherence. Clinicians need to strengthen their counselling and education skills. The introduction of short regimen to treat MDR has shown an improved sputum conversion rate in RR/MDR TB.

Data from a field study were used to assess the relationship between two individual differences variables, (a) rigidity, (b) self-esteem, and beliefs and attitudes toward the introduction of a computer-based information system. Multiple regression and correlation analyses showed that rigidity was negatively related to computer-related beliefs and attitudes. Further, the data indicated that self-esteem was not related to either computer-related beliefs or attitudes. Implications of these results for dealing with resistance to computerization are discussed.

48 Ss were given 20 control trials and 10 trials under competitive conditions on a number facility test (NF). After the administration of NF Ss were divided into 2 groups on the basis of their n-Ach score on the Edwards Personal Preference Schedule. The 24 highest Ss on n Ach were assigned to the high n-Ach group, the other 24 being designated the low n-Ach group. The NF performance of the high group was consistently above that of the low n-Ach group, although this difference was not significant under either control or competitive conditions. A significant learning effect was found over trials. The implications are discussed.

Background: Laparoscopic appendectomy is gaining its popularity as it has better patient compliance. Despite of not being “gold standard”, laparoscopic appendectomy is widely practiced in emergency setting and has become patient’s as well as surgeon’s choice of treatment. Our aim is to acknowledge the advantage and importance of laparoscopic appendectomy at emergency in a retrospective study. Our main objective was to study the efficacy of laparoscopic appendectomy, patients’ demographic profile as well as conversion rate of laparoscopic appendectomy to open appendectomy.Methods: This hospital based retrospective study was carried among 54 patients who had undergone emergency laparoscopic appendectomy at B. P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) between March and April, 2016. The patient’s file was collected from medical record section, studied and analyzed.Results: During the study, it was observed that most of the patients were female (62.97%) and the patients were mostly between 20 to 40 years of age (Mean age 27 years±10.88 SD). Most of the patients presented within 24 hours of onset of symptoms, most commonly with pain in lower abdomen associated mostly with vomiting. Out of 54 patients, 48 patients (88.89%) were diagnosed with acute appendicitis. Frankly speaking, laparoscopic appendectomy was associated with shorter hospital stay (around 3 days) and also has less conversion rate (11.11%). There were minimal post-operative complications without any case of redo and mortality.Conclusions: Laparoscopic appendectomy is safe and efficient procedure with shorter hospital stay and less post-operative complication.

Abstract. In vitro conversion of C19-[3H]androstenedione and C21-[3H]pregnenolone steroids to oestrogens was studied in tissue cultures prepared from bovine cotyledons collected 10–240 min after natural parturition. A total of 17 cows was used, 15 had normal parturitions and 2 cows required assistance due to weak and prolonged labour. At collection of tissues, blood samples were drawn from the cows and peripheral plasma oestrogen levels were determined by radioimmunoassay. Percentage conversion to unconjugated and conjugated oestrogens was estimated for each cow from 6 tissue culture replicates for each precursor. The steroids were extracted with toluene and separated by phenolic extraction and column chromatography. The repeatability of conversion rate was very high. Incubation with androstenedione yielded consistently higher conversion rates than incubation with pregnenolone. Independent of precursor the conversion rates, within cows, ranked unconjugated Oe1 > conjugated Oe1 > unconjugated Oe2 > conjugated Oe2. The conversion rates decreased significantly with increasing intervals from parturition to collection of material. Lower conversion rates were found for cultures of tissues from the 2 cows with weak labour when compared to cultures from normally calving cows. The sire of the foetus had an influence on conversion rate in the tissue cultures. The plasma oestrogen concentrations of the cows decreased significantly with an increased interval from parturition to blood-sampling. With the exception of one cow, the tissue culture conversion rates and the plasma oestrogen levels of the cows were significantly correlated.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to test the effects of subordinates’ individual differences or traits and their performance behavior on the formation of leaders’ LMX, based on leader-member exchange (LMX) theory, thus proposing that both who subordinates are and what they do may affect supervisors’ LMX perceptions.Design/methodology/approachTwo studies were conducted. The first was a non-experimental field study and the second was a laboratory experiment.FindingsStudy 1, a non-experimental field study, HLM, showed that subordinates’ self-reported characteristics predict their leaders’ LMX ratings; Study 2, a laboratory experiment, showed that subordinate performance causes leaders’ LMX perceptions while holding subordinate’s individual differences constant.Originality/valueThe current research was the first to demonstrate experimentally that LMX develops over multiple interactions. Additionally, it demonstrates that task-oriented behavior (i.e. job performance) and personality characteristics (i.e. internal locus of control and self-efficacy) are predictors of LMX.
