AbstractLoss of fish biodiversity, especially in the inland and coastal areas, is a major concern in sustainable fish production. Indiscriminate fish catch, climate change and many other anthropogenic activities synergistically affect fish biodiversity. To formulate a sustainable fish biodiversity conservation plan, fish biodiversity in the Andharmanik River, a 40-km-long Hilsa shad sanctuary in the southern part of Bangladesh, was assessed. The study was conducted to understand the status of fish species diversity through sampling in three sampling stations between December 2014 and November 2015. A total of 93 fish species were found belonging to 66 genera, 45 families and 14 orders. Perciformes (27.65%) was found to be the most dominant order, followed by Cypriniformes (20.21%), Siluriformes (21.28%) Clupeiformes (7.45%) Mastacembeliformes (4.26%) and Channiformes (4.26%). Out of the 93 fish species of the river, the percentage compositions of the vulnerable, endangered, critically endangered and not threatened were found to be 14%, 11%, 6% and 59%, respectively. Four population indices viz. Shannon-Wiener’s diversity index (H), Simpson’s dominance index (D), Simpson’s index of diversity (1-D) and Margalef’s index (d) were applied to demonstrate species diversity, richness and evenness of fish species in sampling areas, and the overall values of the indices were 2.70-3.51, 0.10-0.12, 0.88-0.90 and 7.84-8.19, respectively. The main threats to fish biodiversity were reviewed and the measures for fish biodiversity conservation of the river recommended. Indiscriminate fishing using biodiversity destructive gears, as well as losing hydrological and ecological connectivity with the surrounding habitats, were identified as major threats to biodiversity in the Andharmanik River. Effective sanctuary-based co-management, immediate actions for habitat enhancement to conserve and improve fish biodiversity in the river were recommended. Necessary steps to improve hydrological and ecological connectivity for habitat protection and elimination of all destructive fishing gears in order to conserve biodiversity in the Andharmanik River were also suggested.

Ghodaghodi Lake is an ox-bow perennial lake of Ghodaghodi Lake Complex, situated in Kailali district. The present study was conducted to understand the fish diversity, community structure and distribution pattern in Ghodaghodi Lake. A total of 13 fish species were recorded from the different section of Ghodaghodi Lake, belonging to five order, eight family and eleven genera. According to fish catch the dominant order and family of Ghodaghodi Lake were found to be Cypriniformes (40%) and Cyprinidae (40%) respectively. The dominant fish species of Ghodaghodi Lake was Labeo gonius followed by Mystus tengara, Nandus nandus and Channa striatus. The highest diversity index (2.46), species richness (6.14) and evenness (0.96) of fish were recorded from station III during the month of January. Lowest diversity index (1.75) and evenness (0.90) was found in station II and during the month of October (2.25 and 0.88). Similarly, lowest species richness was found in station I (3.91) and during the month of July (5.82). Fish diversity and number in Ghodaghodi Lake were found to have decreased. The Cyprinidae fish family is a family of freshwater fish with the largest number of species and its presence is widespread almost all of the world. The main habitat of this family is the river's ecosystem, river damming changing the environmental conditions between the ecosystems before and after the dam's watergate. Such as Colo Dam that dammed Bengawan Solo River that allegedly affects the diversity of species of Cyprinidae fish. So this study was conducted in order to determine the diversity and kinship of the Cyprinidae fish family in the ecosystem before and after the Colo Dam watergate. Sampling was conducted September-October 2017 at Sukoharjo Colo Dam by Purposive sampling method. Identify fish species used Kottelat identification books. The diversity of fish species was calculated by Shannon Wiener's diversity index. The correlation between abiotic factor and fish diversity was analyzed by a regression test. The kinship of the fish was analyzed by the Ntsys cluster method (2.02i). The results showed that the Cyprinidae fish species that live in the Colo Dam ecosystem contain 10 species, the diversity of Cyprinidae fish in the fast-water ecosystem of station I is higher (0,96) then the slow-water ecosystem of station II, III, and IV (0,47; 0,73, and 0,58). Abiotic factors of current velocity affect the level of fish diversity reaches 91%. The Cyprinidae fish kinship rate has a coefficient of resemblance between 60% - 85%, fish with the same genus and many similarities in morphological characters and their behavior is categorized as having a close kinship.

Fish diversity depends both on various physicochemical parameters and the biological components of the riverine ecosystem. During the study period from January 2017 to December 2019 the highest fish diversity and density were observed in post-monsoon and lowest in pre-monsoon season in the Kangsabati River, Purulia District of West Bengal. Twenty five fish species, associated with 19 genera, 10 families and 5 orders have been identified. It was recorded that the Cyprinidae was the predominant family, which represented 56% of the entire fish catch.

Estuaries are critical aquatic environments that are used by many fish during their life cycle. However, estuaries often suffer from poor water quality as a result of anthropogenic activities. Fish diversity studies in estuaries are common, although few have examined whether correlations exist between water quality, metal contamination and fish assemblages. In the present study we investigated the effect of abiotic conditions, heavy metals and estuary characteristics on the abundance, diversity and composition of fish in four intermittently open estuaries along the Illawarra coast of south-eastern Australia. The heterogeneity of environmental conditions was reflected in the fish assemblages in each estuary. Environmental variables predicted fish species composition, and estuaries in particularly poor condition contained few species (estuarine residents) in high abundance, indicating their ability to acclimatise and survive in conditions that are hostile to other species. Overall, these findings demonstrate that estuarine fish assemblages may be useful indicators of estuary condition and reveal the importance of managing anthropogenic activities in the surrounding catchment to improve water quality so that biodiversity of fish can be restored in these estuarine environments.

We evaluated fish diversity in three tributaries of the São Francisco River, one of the largest watercourses in Brazil. The study site is in the sub-basin of the Carinhanha River [Carinhanha, Cocos (I and II) and Itaguari Rivers], located in the South region of the Bahia state. These rivers are crossed by bridges of the federal highway BR-135. After sampling, upstream and downstream from each bridge, during drought and rain seasons, 3,520 specimens of fish (57 species, 21 families) were captured. The species with highest occurrence were Astyanax cf. taeniatus, Serrapinnus heterodon, Astyanax bimaculatus and Astyanax cf. rivularis. During drought season, the number of specimens captured was higher, leading to an increase of species dominance. In the rainy season, species diversity was higher with a greater distribution of individuals among species. The data indicate the maintenance of the fish faunal structure despite anthropogenic activities on the studied areas.

The fish community and physico-chemical properties at five sites of Melamchi River were studied monthly from January 2011 to December 2013.    Melamchi River is one of tributaries larger Indrawati River basin, originates from the high snowy Jugal Mountain (5,875 m asl). Eleven fish species within two orders and five families were recorded.   Cypriniformes  was  found  to  be  the  most  dominant  order  with  ten  fish  species. Schizothorax plagiostomus  was the most common fish species followed by  Neolissochilus hexagonolepis, and  Psilorhynchus pseudecheneis.  Shannon Wiener fish diversity index and species richness recorded were highest at site 2 and lowest at site 5, whereas, evenness index was highest at site 3. The cluster analysis revealed  that  similarity  between  fish  species  decreased  as  the  distance  between  the  sites  increased.  Fish species were found distributed among four groups with respect to the significant habitat characteristics in the redundancy analysis (RDA). River water was found well-oxygenated and alkaline at all sites. However, high level for turbidity (43.25/ NTU) was observed at site 5, which exceeded compliance levels of WHO indicating the influence of intensive agriculture and deforestation along river area. Quantitative surveys of fish-species diversity were undertaken at 10 m and 20 m water depth on the outer reef at Aldabra Atoll, southern Seychelles, between November 1999 and May 2003. No significant changes in total fish-species diversity, numbers of families represented by these species, or numbers of pomacentrid or chaetodontid species were seen, contrary to fish-diversity changes seen on coral bleaching-impacted reefs elsewhere. The lack of additional anthropogenic pressures at remote Aldabara may make this system, and others like it, more tolerant of bleaching-related population changes.

Fish species, fishing gear and crafts in the most polluted river Buriganga were inventorial. During December, 2012 to November, 2013, a total of 56 fish species belonging to 20 families and 9 orders were recorded. Cypriniformes observed to be the most dominant order with 18 species (32%). The highest fish diversity was recorded during monsoon season, and lowest during winter. Maximum diversity variance (7.616 ± 2.76 Sd) observed in the monsoon season for 56 species (220 individuals). Also 12 different types of gears of two categories (active and passive) and two types of crafts were observed to be used for fishing in the study area. The highest number of species of fishes (n = 56) recorded in August and lowest (n = 3) in April and May 2013. Strong correlation between water depth and number of fish species (r = 0.74) and fishing activities (r = 0.96) was observed.Bangladesh J. Zool. 45(1): 11-26, 2017

Sungai Siak merupakan salah satu Sungai besar yang mengalir di Provinsi Riau yang memiliki banyak fungsi salah satu dari fungsi tersebut adalah usaha penangkapan ikan. Kegiatan penangkapan ikan di Sungai Siak menggunakan alat tangkap yang bersifat tradisional dan dilakukan secara kelompok atau perorangan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui jumlah dan jenis alat tangkap jenis ikan, kelimpahan relatif, dan keanekaragaman jenis ikan yang ada di perairan Sungai Siakpada tahun 2008. Pengambilan data dilakukan di perairan Sungai Siak mulai dari Kuala Tapung sampai Muara Mandau. Pengambilan data alat tangkap dilakukan terhadap nelayan yang sedang mengoperasikan alat tangkap tersebut, sedang pengambilan data jenis dan hasil tangkapan ikan dilakukan secara langsung di lapangan. Pengumpulan data bulanan jenis dan hasil tangkapan dibantu oleh nelayan setempat sebagai enumerator. Hasil penelitian menunjukan terdapat delapanjenis alat tangkap yang beroperasi di Sungai Siak mulai dari Kuala Tapung sampai Muara Mandau yaitu jaring, rawai, tajur, luka, pengilar, belad, dan jala. Alat tangkap jaring dan jala jumlah dan sebarannya paling banyak ditemukan di sepanjang Sungai Siak mulai dari Kuala Tapung sampai Muara Mandau, lalu disusul alat tangkap belad. Untuk jenis ikan ditemukan 60 jenis ikan yang tertangkap dari berbagai jenis alat tangkap, ikan tersebut berasal dari 12 famili dan satu jenis krustacea yaitu udang galah (Macrobrachium rosenbergii), dari 12 famili tersebut kelimpahan relatif didominansi oleh famili Cyprinidae dan Engraulidae baik pada bulan Juni, Agustus, dan Oktober. Jika dilihat dari nilai Indeks keanekaragaman pada beberapa stasiun Sungai Siak mempunyai nilai indeks berkisar antara 0,5-3,0. Siak River one of the biggest river at Riau Province has a multipurpose function including fisheries. Fishing activity at the river used a traditional gear which was operated by individual or group fisherman. A study aimed to investigate number and type of fishing gears, fish species caught, relative abundance and fish diversity of the Siak River was conducted from Kuala Tapung until Muara Mandau in 2008. Data of fishing were collected from the fisherman operated the fishing gears. Monthly data on fish species caught and fish yield were collected directly by enumerator. Results of the study showed that eight kinds of fishing gears, namely gillnets, long line, hand line, traps (luka, pengilar, and belad), filtering device, and cast net were operated. The dominant fishing gear operated was gillnet and cast net and filtering device in the next. About sixty fish species from the twelve families and giant freshwaters prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) were caught using those fishing gears. During June, August, and October, the relative abundance of the fish species was dominated by family of Cyprinidae and Engraulidae. The fish diversity index of the Siak River ranged from 0.5-3.0.

Fisheries production in the mainland waters of Mappi Regency is larger (27.48%) compared to marine fisheries (8.53%).  Edera District is one of the districts in Mappi District which contributes to the potential of fisheries specifically for mainland waters. This study aims to determine the diversity of fish species in the Digoel River, Edera District, Mappi Regency. The fishing gear used is gill nets, stocking nets, fixed lines, fishing rods and spoon nets (tanggo).  The study was conducted in August - October 2017 using the survey method. The variables analyzed were the species diversity index, evenness index, dominance index and relative abundance index.  The results of the study obtained 28 species of fish which were divided into 8 orders of 20 families and 28 species. The value of the diversity of fish species is moderate, the Evenness value is relatively stable and evenly distributed, the type of dominance in Di shows that there is no dominance of species and the relative abundance of Kr is medium.
