Abstract Global change-type droughts will become more frequent in the future and threaten forest ecosystems around the globe. A large proportion of the Estonian forest sector is currently subject to artificial drainage, which could probably lead to negative feedbacks when water supply falls short because of high temperatures and low precipitation during future drought periods. In this short article, we propose a novel research perspective that could make use of already gathered data resources, such as remote sensing, climate data, tree-ring research, soil information and hydrological modelling. We conclude that, when applied in concert, such an assembled dataset has the potential to contribute to mitigation of negative climate change consequences for the Estonian forest sector. In particular, smart-drainage systems are currently a rare phenomenon in forestry, although their implementation into existing drainage systems could help maintain the critical soil water content during periods of drought, while properly fulfilling their main task of removing excess water during wet phases. We discuss this new research perspective in light of the current frame conditions of the Estonian forest sector and resolve some current lacks in knowledge and data resources which could help improve the concept in the future.

In 1980 work began on one of the most intensive and comprehensive marine research and development projects—the German Ship of the Future. The main task was the reduction of the operational costs of a vessel. After five years of work the project was successfully finished with the maiden voyage of the first SdZ prototype ship. The paper describes first the R&D project itself. The organizational structure, the financial background and some examples of development topics are explained. The second part deals with the conversion of the outcomes of the R&D project into the reality of a containership. The third part gives, by example of some focal points of the newly developed ship service technique, a broad description of the HDW-SdZ prototype ships and their economy. A short outlook to further developments concludes the paper.

In this short article the author indicates the present stages of development of variety evaluation, testing, certification, production and marketing of quality seed—of cereals, industrial crops, pasture plants and vegetables—in major geographical regions of the world and draws attention to some of the underlying problems which must be faced in the future if further progress is to be made.

Over several decades during the second half of the last century, the Romanian-born Parisian intellectual E. M. Cioran penned a series of uneasy works whose despondent obsession with God is matched only by their utter disavowal of the reality of the divine. Wrestling pessimistically with nihilism in a world forged by chronic insomnia, illness, nicotine, and despair, Cioran confronts the theologian with a particularly radical articulation of unbelief hard-won at the “verge of existence,” and existence suffered as an “accident of God.” This short article explores the form and substance of Cioran’s biting and aphoristic expression of modern unbelief in an attempt to discern something of its theological significance. Perhaps theology would do well to receive this work as a necessary ascesis of its inapt and faithless contentment and ease with the world. And could it be that theology stands to be schooled in the near impossibility and profundity of hope by the cynicist’s surprising confession that, “Each time the future seems conceivable to me, I have the impression of being visited by Grace”?

The purpose of this research is to contribute initiative ideas to improve the hajj management professionalism through dynamic governance. This research uses qualitative type with descriptive approach. The research results with concern to the culture and capability of the Ministry of Religious Affairs formulate that thinking ahead can be executed by analyzing and projecting what will be facing in 10 or 20 years into the future based on the tendency toward national and global change, political constellation, and socio-economic of the community. Thinking again can be done by reviewing again whether policies, strategies and programs that are running are appropriate and able to meet the needs of pilgrims. And Thinking across, can be applied by learning from the experiences of other countries that also regulates the organization of the Hajj.

The forest sector plays a key role in meeting the climate change challenge. Forest products and renewable materials are masterpieces in achieving this role. This editorial destails the benefits of these forest prodcuts and celebrates the contributions of the authors who submitted their work to this special edition of Forests journal. This edition presents 11 papers, which include the characterization of a new fiber supply, the description of advanced materials and their environmental impact, and an examination of structural products, wood protection, and modifications.
