Abstract This study evaluated the behavioural response and weight of broiler birds at the 4th and 6th week of age when raised under incandescent (ICD) and compact fluorescent light (CFL). At 2 weeks of age, a total of 216 Arbor Acres birds were randomly allotted into 3 treatments: Control (no artificial light), ICD (60 watts, 800 lm) and CFL (40 watts, 2000 lm). Artificial lighting was provided from 8 p. m. to 4 a. m. daily. Data collected were subjected to One-way ANOVA using Minitab 17 through a general linear model (GLM) procedure and means were separated using Tukey’s test software. At 4 weeks of age, the presence of light significantly increased (P < 0.05) the weight, as well as the occurrence of feeding, drinking, sitting, standing, walking, running and jumping behaviour. ICD and CFL had similar effects on feeding and jumping behaviour. At 6 weeks of age, the presence of light had no significant effect (P > 0.05) on the frequency of drinking and jumping behaviour. However, the weight, the frequency of feeding, standing, walking and running behaviour increased (P < 0.05) under the two light sources compared to the control. Also, birds raised under CFL displayed a higher frequency (P < 0.05) of inactive/resting and locomotor behaviour compared to birds reared under ICD which had a higher frequency of drinking behaviour. From this study, the use of CFL throughout the production stages is encouraged in poultry facilities due to the resultant increase in the activity levels of broilers and the reduced energy cost.

As a solid electroluminescent source, white light emitting diode (LED) has entered a practical stage and become an alternative to replace incandescent and fluorescent light sources. However, due to the increasing integration and miniaturization of LED chips, heat flux inside the chip is also increasing, which puts the packaging into the position to meet higher requirements of heat dissipation. In this study, a new interconnection material—nanosilver paste is used for the LED chip packaging to pursue a better optical performance, since high thermal conductivity of this material can help improve the efficiency of heat dissipation for the LED chip. The bonding ability of this new die-attach material is evaluated by their bonding strength. Moreover, high-power LED modules connected with nanosilver paste, Sn3Ag0.5Cu solder, and silver epoxy are aged under hygrothermal aging and temperature cycling tests. The performances of these LED modules are tested at different aging time. The results show that LED modules sintered with nanosilver paste have the best performance and stability.

<p>In this case study, two polycrystalline solar modules were installed outdoors (irradiated by sunlight) and indoors (irradiated by artificial lights). The solar cells in both cases were installed using different color filters that allowed the passage of certain light frequencies. The amount of energy produced by each module were measured and compared to a reference module with no filter. The results indicated the variable response of polycrystalline solar cells to natural and artificial light sources, being more responsive in both cases to red band color as could be deduced from their % current outputs (72.5% sunlight radiation; 84.38% artificial light sources). Other colors, including yellow, green, orange and violet afforded acceptable outputs. The results indicated that electrical outputs of indoor solar cells decreased when colored filters were used, but red filter in general afforded the maximum outputs, for both the artificially radiated indoor and naturally radiated outdoor solar cells. The case study suggests the possible complementary advantage of using indoor mounted solar cells for the production of electricity during artificial illumination period of the day.</p>

Our previous findings suggested the existence of stressor-specific behavioural and cognitive responses in rats. In the present study, restraint stressor (immobilization, IMO) and restraint stressor combined with partial immersion of rats into water (IMO+C) were applied for 1 hour to Wistar male rats and their spontaneous behaviour was examined in the open field test. The classic behavioural parameters were recorded: crossing, rearing, and resting. When tested 1 and 4 hours after IMO+C, animals exhibited strong suppression of locomotor and exploratory activity (crossing and rearing); partial inhibition of both behavioural variables was found after IMO. Thus, substantial differences were observed in dependence on the length of period between the end of stressor application and the start of testing. In testing performed one week later, the locomotor and exploratory activity levels of both IMO and IMO+C animals corresponded to the control ones. These data suggest a differential behavioural response to both used stressors that may result from their different proportion of psychical and physical components. In conclusion, our results provide other data for the support of differential effects of two types of restraint stressors on spontaneous behaviour of animals exposed to a novel environment.
