Abstract Purpose To show for which publication-citation arrays h-type indices are equal and to reconsider rational h-type indices. Results for these research questions fill some gaps in existing basic knowledge about h-type indices. Design/methodology/approach The results and introduction of new indicators are based on well-known definitions. Findings The research purpose has been reached: answers to the first questions are obtained and new indicators are defined. Research limitations h-type indices do not meet the Bouyssou-Marchant independence requirement. Practical implications On the one hand, more insight has been obtained for well-known indices such as the h- and the g-index and on the other hand, simple extensions of existing indicators have been added to the bibliometric toolbox. Relative rational h-type indices are more useful for individuals than the existing absolute ones. Originality/value Answers to basic questions such as “when are the values of two h-type indices equal” are provided. A new rational h-index is introduced.

A dichotomy often frequent in the context of geographic studies concerns the dualism between propagation and induction models-based phenomena, inherent in variables and factors characterizing contiguous areas, and research relating to homogeneity between geographically not closed areas. In the wake of the latter research, this contribution proposes a model that exploits the potential of graph theory for the evaluation of common dynamics relating to non-contiguous areas. The assumption underlying the model envisages configuring the reality being studied in terms of a network whose nodes and branches are respectively representative of entities distant from each other and of their related affinities. The proposed approach focuses on some Italian industrial districts. The value of the proposed approach is twofold, on the one hand regarding the specific industrial district topic with both scientific and practical implications, and on the other hand it aims to provide a method that can be replicated in similar scenarios in which it is interesting to evaluate the similarity between neighboring areas analytically.

Purpose Conflict is inevitable in organizational life. On the one hand, it can bring creativity and enhance problem-solving. On the other, it can hinder effective problem-solving, increase defensiveness and member dissatisfaction, and create a destructive work environment. This paper aims to outline four important components of harmonization that help to enhance conflict-management capability. Design/methodology/approach Based on Nguyen and Belk’s (2013) harmonization framework, the author adds their own comments and places in the context of resolving conflict in organization. Findings The harmonization process synthesizes multiple goals and balances differences to achieve better solutions without discounting any of these elements. Harmonization provides better understanding of important issues and why they are critical to each party. Each party will feel better about the situation after having heard the other side’s position. There might be anger, anxiety, or frustration at the beginning. However, when people successfully go through the harmonization process, they feel happy, connected to others and proud of the results they get. These processes require communicating with others, learning others’ perspectives, understanding and empathizing with others, and being willing to adjust. Practical implications The paper outlines four skills in which organizations can train their employees to improve conflict management. Originality/value Harmonization process is applied to conflict management in organization.

This article analyses Br’er Rabbit, a trickster character in African-American folklore. As a trickster Br’er Rabbit possesses a paradoxical nature. On the one hand, Br’er Rabbit acts as a hero but on the other hand, he constantly plays tricks on others and by doing so, he is also violating the prevailing values. These two opposing aspects of trickster’s nature offer an interesting subject for the research. The questions considered worth focusing on in discussing the subject are: How can trickster character be described? What values are represented by trickster character? Is there any shift in the description and represented values in different media and over time? The study presented in this article was aimed at investigating the transformation of how the trickster is characterized and values represented by trickster Br’er Rabbit in Uncle Remus’ folktale version of “The Wonderful Tar Baby (1881) and The Laughing Place” (1903) written by Joel Chandler Harries and the same trickster character in the same stories featured in Disney’s “Song of the South” (1946). By comparing and contrasting both narratives in different media and eras, it is uncovered that there are some changes on the depiction and nature as well as values represented by Br’er Rabbit, the trickster character. The study presented in this article was aimed at investigating the transformation of values represented by trickster Br’er Rabbit in Uncle Remus’ folktale version of “Tar Baby and The Laughing Place” (1879) written by Joel Chandler Harries and the same trickster character in the same stories featured in Disney’s “Song of the South.” The research questions of this study are answered by applying Barths’ theory and method in studying headlines news. This model of research enables the researcher to understand and interprete values represented by the trickster character in different times and media.

Two motivations underlying punishment can be distinguished. On the one hand, the retributive motivation prescribes that punishment should be proportional to the moral offense caused. On the other hand, according the utilitarian perspective, punishment should be aimed at protecting society by reducing the likelihood of similar infractions. Previous research did not examine whether individual differences could lead to a preference for one of the two motivations. We propose that high need for closure could be associated with higher utilitarian motivation because of its general concern for group related consequences of violations. In support of our hypothesis, in Study 1 we found that individuals high in need for closure endorsed to a greater extent a zero-tolerance policy rather than a proportional one. Study 2 further showed that closed-minded individuals sought more information related to the utilitarian, rather than the retributive perspective, when judging a violation. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Purpose – This paper aims to propose a system for settlement of obligations of those who, on the one hand, serially owe someone and, on the other hand, are creditors to other persons. Serial Commitments Clearance (SCC) system provides the necessary arrangements for this purpose. Design/methodology/approach – Theoretical discussions of serial chain of debits and credits were conducted by considering the laws and regulations of commitment clearance. Findings – By considering laws and regulations of commitment clearance and introducing theory of serial chain of debits and credits, this system proposes an algorithm for recognition of serial commitments. Research limitations/implications – This process is set in connection to the Collateral Registration System and Mortgage Securitization System in Rastin Banking, while considering the legal and operational problems. Accordingly, banks, notary offices and other authorized authorities can clear serial obligations of persons due to their requests and agreements and release their collaterals and guarantees as far as the debts of the persons are equivalent. Practical implications – This system will cause financial release and efficiency of many economic firms. In addition, banks will gain commission for rendering this service. Social implications – SCC is a model that can be used in all countries, especially those which have more uncertainties and traders need more pledges for their transactions. Originality/value – This study fulfils an identified need to solve practical legal problems in vindication of rights.

Abstract. The aim of this research was to analyse the relationship between beliefs and perceptions held by adolescent footballers on success in the categories of U16 (under 16) and U18 (under18) leagues, as well as exploring the possible differences between sporting categories and their team’s ranking. The sample included 512 individuals belonging to 12 clubs in the city of Zaragoza (M=16,01; DT: 1,465). The main means used were Perception of Success Questionnaire (POSQ) translated into Spanish by Cervelló, Escartí y Balaguer (1999) as well as Beliefs About the Causes of Sport Success Questionnaire (BACSSQ), created by Castillo, Balaguer y Duda (2002). The results showed a correlation, on the one hand, between attitudes towards the task and beliefs in success based on effort and motivation, and on the other hand, of attitudes towards oneself and both the accurate self-assessment of performance and the use of cheating methods, taking into account significant differences between the competitive level and the qualifying rank. Some practical implications can be deduced for coaches and instructors to bear in mind for their athletes who aim to acquire a more adaptive and self-determined behaviour in the attainment of sporting results.

The research purpose was to examine the problems of companies in implementing Activity-Based Costing and, in particular, to analyze the differences in assessing the level of these problems perceived by organizations using the system, considering its implementation, those which had not considered it, and those which had rejected it. The research showed that the problems with ABC implementation seen by adopters were considerably smaller compared to the other groups. A similar difference was noted between enterprises that were considering the implementation of the ABC system (and not considering it at all) and those that rejected it. The last group perceived implementation problems to be bigger than was the case in the groups which were still considering implementation or had not considered it at all. The findings seem to support the view that companies are making ABC implementation decisions rationally. On the one hand, when the problems perceived during implementation are relatively small, the company adopts ABC. On the other hand, when a company perceives the implementation problems as being quite significant, it rejects the implementation. In the middle of the scale are companies considering the implementation of ABC and others that are not thinking about it at all. They assess the perceived problems as moderate and are not in a position yet to decide for or against ABC implementation. There could also be an alternative explanation for the research results. It may be the case that companies, which have not implemented ABC overestimate the implementation problems.

This study examines the cybersecurity insurance market in the United States (U.S.) in order to reveal if an “invisible hole” of services and information exists in this market. This is performed by mapping the cybersecurity insurance services, offered by insurance companies, to cope with cybersecurity risks, and finding in which way these services are exposed, visible and comprehensive, in the insurance companies' websites. The research questions examined the extent cybersecurity insurance services offered by the main U.S. insurance companies; the visibility of such services on their websites; and the types of services offered. The sample included 44 insurance companies based upon nine lists of the top U.S. insurance companies. The findings present that most companies (68%) offer cybersecurity insurance services, while only a few (26.92%) expose such information in a visible way. Moreover, on the one hand, the insurance companies use general terms for services, which may be blur and ambiguous, while on the other hand, there is a widespread of specific services, most of them (81%) provided only by few companies. These findings may derive due to insufficient understanding of cybersecurity insurance clients' needs and may reflect the lack of maturity of the cybersecurity insurance market, as matured marketplaces are mostly more standardized. This study demonstrates that there is a long way to advance until the insurance market for cybersecurity risks will be mature, customers (businesses and organizations) will understand the needs for such insurance, and insurance companies will develop and offer relevant insurance services.

Contemporary social science with its Western-origin represents a challenge for Muslim scholars and researchers in various aspects, including the issue of terminology. To meet this challenge various attempts have been made under different titles, such as Islamization and establishing Islamic foundations. Such attempts has faced stiff opposition from advocates of identification with Western thought, on the one hand, and criticism from within the Islamic Circle itself on the other hand, because of what was seen as imbalance and deficiencies. Media is one of the fields of social science, in which the terminology is still a problem in building Islamic perspective and establishing Islamic foundations of the field. This study discusses the term "Islamic media", its epistemological problems, and practical implications; that makes the term unable to perform the desired function, especially in the construction of knowledge and using it to achieve Islamic objectives in the contemporary human society.

This paper focuses on the Mediterranean coastal monitoring actors (i.e. maritime signaling instruments) such as lighthouses, lights, traffic lights. A twofold motivation behind this choice: on the one hand the 110th anniversary - that will be celebrated in 2021 - of the transfer of the management of the lighting service of the coasts from Italian Ministry of Public Works to the Navy. On the other hand, the willing to illustrate how the Systemic Design methodology can represent a strategic element for the enhancement of a coastal Cultural Heritage such as the one represented by lighthouses.
