Abstract The MgGa2O4 ceramics co-doped with Mn2+ and Eu3+ ions were synthesized via a high-temperature solid-state reaction technique. The samples with various Eu3+ concentrations were characterised using high-resolution photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The PL spectra show weak matrix emission in a blue spectral region with dominant excitation band around 380 nm. Manganese ions are highly excited deeply in UV region and exhibit emission band peaked at 502 nm. The Eu3+ ions show characteristic f-f excitation and emission lines. The energy transfer between host defects and activator ions was observed. Luminescence decay curves of Mn2+ and Eu3+ emission showed complex kinetics with both Eu3+-ion concentration and excitation wavelength changes.

Eu3+or/and Sm3+co-doped glasses based on TeO2-ZnO-ZnCl2-Li2O are prepared using the melt quenching technique and the effects of co-doping on the emission spectra of these glasses are examined. The Sm3+doped glass under 403 nm excitations show emission bands around 561, 598 and 642 nm corresponding to the transitions of4G5/2→6H5/2,4G5/2→6H7/2and4G5/2→6H9/2respectively. Whereas, in Eu3+doped glass under 397 nm excitation emission bands appear around 553, 586, 613, 650 and 699 nm that corresponds to the transitions of5D1→7F2,5D0→7F1,5D0→7F2,5D0→7F3and5D0→7F4. In addition, the emission spectra of the Eu3+/Sm3+co-doped glass under 482 nm excitation consists of five bands in which three are contributed by Sm3+at 561, 598 and 642 nm and two by Eu3+at 613 nm and 699 nm respectively. Surprisingly, the emission bands of Eu3+are still observed in the emission spectra of Sm3+for the Eu3+/Sm3+co-doped glasses despite the absence of the excitation wavelength 482 nm in the absorption and excitation domain of Eu3+. This observation is attributed to the partial resonance transfer of the absorption energy from Sm3+to the Eu3+ions.

Abstract. Excitation and emission spectra under UV and X-ray excitations, as well as the luminescence decay kinetics of Gd3Ga5O12: Bi single crystalline films were studied. The emission spectra observed in the spectral region 350-700 nm at room temperature consist two elementary bands peaked at 446 and 521 nm. The influence of growth conditions on the luminescent properties of Gd3Ga5O12: Bi3+ garnet have been revealed. The integral and relative intensities of the luminescence bands depend on the excitation wavelength. The Bi3+ decay curves of all investigated films show non-single exponential behavior at room temperature.

High quality thin epitaxial films of Lu3(Ga,In)5O12:Eu3+ were grown by liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) method from Bi2O3-based flux. Excitation and emission spectra as well as luminescence decay kinetics of Lu3(Ga,In)5O12:Eu3+ epitaxial films were studied under UV excitation. The photoluminescence spectra of Eu3+ ions in Lu3(Ga,In)5O12:Eu3+ are characteristic to the f→f transition in the Eu3+ ions that occupied dodecahedral sites in the garnet structure. The efficient energy transfer between Bi3+→Eu3+ is observed at the excitation of Lu3(Ga,In)5O12:Eu3+ films in Bi3+ excitation band with maximum at 288 nm. The Eu3+ decay curves of all investigated films show non-single exponential behavior at room temperature.

An automated method is described, using standard continuous flow techniques, for the determination of urine fluoride ion concentration using a fluoride ion selective electrode. It is shown that the kinetics of the electrode response to changes in fluoride ion can be used for the accurate measurement of fluoride ion concentration in urine, and that equilibration of the electrode response is not a prerequisite for the measurement of fluoride ion. Recovery experiments are in the range 83 to 90%; in-batch precision is between 0·9 and 1·6% and carryover 2·5% or less.

Pure TiO2, Eu3+and Sm3+co-doping TiO2composite nanoparticles have been prepared by sol-gel method and characterized by the techniques such as XRD, SEM and DRS. The photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution was used as a probe reaction to evaluate their photocatalytic activity. The matrix distortion of TiO2nano-particles increases after co-doping of Eu3+and Sm3+and a blue-shift of the absorption profile are clearly observed. The results show that co-doping of Eu3+and Sm3+inhibits the phase transformation of TiO2from anatase to rutile, decreases the diameter of TiO2nano-particles and significantly enhance the photocatalytic activity of TiO2. The Eu3+and Sm3+co-doped into TiO2nano-particles exert a synergistic effect on their photocatalytic activity.
