AbstractCabin placement layout is an important part of ship cabin layout design. A good cabin placement layout can improve the efficiency of the ship’s cabin arrangement. However, optimisation of the layout of cabin placement is not widely studied and more often relies on the experience of the staff. Thus, a novel methodology combining systematic layout planning and a genetic algorithm to optimise the cabin placement is presented in this paper. First key elements are converted by a systematic planning method that is often applied in factory layout, and a preliminary cabin placement layout model is established according to these key elements. Then the circulation strength and adjacency strength are taken as sub-objectives to establish a mathematical model, and an improved genetic algorithm is used to optimise the model. The result of the optimisation is compared with the initial schemes to verify the validity of the algorithm. Finally, the human factors are introduced according to the actual situation. The AHP method is used to select the layout scheme of the cabin that is most likely to be applied in the actual cabin layout.

To enlarge production to meet the market demand, its nessasery to improve the present facility layout for MTO (Make-To-Order) manufacturing enterprises. This paper tries to design a optimization method based on genetic algorithm for the facility layout of MTO enterprises. Firstly, SLP (systematic layout planning) was applied to analyze the material and non-material flow interrelation of the workshop. Secondly, a relatively optimum layout was determined after using fuzzy hierarchy estimation to evaluate the schemes. Then the scheme was optimized with genetic algorithm. The result shows that the optimized logistics transport load is obviously less than before. This design method based on genetic algorithm (GA) is proved feasible and effective in the optimization of facility layout.

In this paper, we analyze the disadvantage of common generating test paper algorithm. An improved genetic algorithm (IGA) is proposed and used in auto-generating examination paper algorithm. We design the mathematical model of auto-generating test paper algorithm and improved the traditional GA fitness evaluation form. A computational study is carried out to verify the algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate that the performance of IGA can work efficiently than traditional ones.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to plan the layout of the production area of an industrial kitchen of a theme restaurant through the application of the systematic layout planning (SLP) methodology and the establishment of layout indicators with a specific application in the restaurant business. Design/methodology/approach – The authors applied the SLP methodology in the industrial kitchen of a theme restaurant in order to plan and develop layout alternatives. Such layout alternatives were then evaluated according to a set of specific indicators consolidated based on a literature review. Finally, a multi-criteria decision-making tool was used to support the selection of the best layout alternative and suggest to the case study area. Findings – The main results could be highlighted as: first, an area, previously unexplored, of approximately 5.40 m² ended up being used as a productive area for the operations; second, 40 percent reduction in work-in-process by removing the refrigerators of groceries and the freezer from the production area; third, indirect indicators, such as customer satisfaction and the employee’s workplace environment, have increased their performance, since customers were better served and working environment became more conducive to a good employee performance. Originality/value – Most research in layout planning is typically developed in productive industrial areas, and this paper contributes to the understanding the differences of implementing SLP methodology in a food service business, such as restaurant, and proposes the utilization of specific layout indicators.

Abstract – Unplanned layout and inefficient material flow between work units can lead to increased cost. PT Transplan Indonesia's current material flow path is inefficient with material flow distance 115.5 meters and material handling cost that has not been taken into account. This study aims to find out how big the role of facility layout design in cutting the distance of material transfer and pressing the cost of material handling. The method used in this research is Systematic Layout Planning (SLP) approach, which is comparing the distance of material transfer between initial layout with proposed layout. The results of this study indicate that the distance of the material flow path on the production floor with proposed layout changed to 71,7 meters, with material handling cost per meter reduced from Rp. 1,105,954 to Rp. 712,402 or decrease as much as 35%. Based on the results of the research, the layout of the proposal is considered more effective and efficient because it can reduce the distance of material transfer and reduce the cost of material handling on the packing/shipping floor. Keywords: Layout Design; Material handling cost; Systematic Layout Planning (SLP)

The driving safety of heavy-haul train is affected by the train’s traction weight, the length of train, the line profile, the line speed limit, and other factors. Generally, when the train is running on a continuously long and steep downgrade line, it needs using the circulating air braking to adjust speed. When it is braking, the brake wave is transmitted non-linearly along the direction of the train. When it is relieved, it must be ensured that there is sufficient time for the train to be inflated. Therefore, it is difficult to ensure the safe operation of the heavy-haul train. In this article, a new method of the train’s driving strategy based on improved genetic algorithm is proposed. First, a mathematical model for the operation of heavy-haul train is established with multiple parameters. Then, according to the improved genetic algorithm and the mathematical model of the heavy-haul train, the driving strategy of the chromosome of the train is studied. Finally, the driving curve which can ensure the safe running of the heavy-haul train can be obtained. By comparing the simulated driving curve with the actual one, the results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

In this paper a magazine layout optimization model with performance constraints is described and the objective function and its constraints of magazine layout are established. A multiobjective optimizations layout model based on polygon method is put forward. The model deals with a series of constraints such as geometry constraints, in-and-out point position optimization, magazine capacity and system reliability and safety. An improved genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed in this paper based on the new encoding scheme and logical mutation operator. The algorithm solved the problem of multiobjective layout design with performance constraints.

One of the most common problems encountered in the manufacturing process is improper layout. About 30% of production time is wasted on transporting materials and products. The causes of this waste are problems in the disposition of stock and machines in production, that is, in the factory layout production of school desks became more efficient with the use of the cell layout. The result found was that with the implementation of the cell layout, there was an increase in the number of wallets produced and a reduction in the waste of materials. It is concluded that the. In this context, the production line based on the cellular layout has been an excellent ally, since the cells of this layout can improve the use of available space, without increasing costs due to major renovations or constructions. To prove such improvements, through the implementation of the cell layout, the PSL method (Systematic Layout Planning) was used, which follows steps such as data collection, analysis of necessary and available space, and factory limitations. With these stages of knowledge and analysis of the factory, it becomes possible to discard layouts that do not fit the characteristics of the company, whether related to financial resources, available space, and factory culture. Using the Chi-Square test for statistical analysis, it was possible to verify that the cell layout is an efficient optimization tool in the school desks production process, as it brought numerous benefits to the factory under studies, such as increased productivity, greater organization, and flexibility in the processes.

This article aims to address the importance of proposing the appropriate location and the best plant layout for a small coffee factory. The focus of this article is directed to the planning of the factory plant, respecting the standards required by governmental agencies. For the sizing of the factory and determination of its physical arrangement, the qualitative approach was adopted in what concerns the understanding of the particularities of the layout, as well as the quantitative approach with regard to information on machines and labor. While bibliographical and documentary research supported the collection of data. The Systematic Layout Planning (SLP) method provided guidelines for layout design, and with the help of Autocad software, the plan was outlined. As a result, it is expected that the layout developed will meet the actual needs of the factory under study to meet the basic requirements of legislation, safety, ergonomics and productivity.
