Protreptikos - the Exhortation for Scientific TourismThe presented paper focuses primarily on the tourism activities of teaching staff at universities and other research institutions. This applies in particular to travel during which the principal purpose is, inter alia, various exploratory internships, conferences, trips as a guest professor or a visiting professor under the auspices of the Erasmus and Erasmus Mundus programs. These peregrinations require extra effort, not only with regards to teaching and research duties, but also present opportunities to confront, test and evaluate one's own research results and outlook with new listeners in new locations in different environments. This travel especially applies to the foreign environment, a situation that presents high degrees of professional, scientific and linguistic challenges, resulting in increased contributions and activity to the specific field of science. Regardless of the workload and the difficulties of the discussed travel, such travel can also bring about much personal satisfaction: a) due to a sense of a well done job as a result of meeting expectations of the employer and the host placed on the ‘messenger of science’ and b) due to the pleasure associated with those tourist experiences having autotelic and pragmatic (instrumental) overtones.

Across higher education, teachers have been inspiring themselves (and others) to apply pedagogical innovations grounded in a unifying intention: to prepare students for labour markets and societal challenges. Research-based education has been funded to promote pedagogical innovations with valuable impact on the students' academic success and/or the teachers' academic growth. However, there is still few documented research-based evidence that highlight how long-lasting and/or how embedded are the pedagogical innovations in academic practices, particularly when the funding period comes to an end. The purpose of this article is to discuss the extent to which funded national research-based education projects, developed in public Portuguese higher education institutions (universities and polytechnic institutes), have considered the sustainability of research results (e.g., pedagogical innovations), after funding ends. Based on a qualitative research approach, data collection included: document analysis of 39 projects’ materials and conceptions collected with 9 coordinators and 17 key participants from selected projects, through interviews and questionnaires, respectively. Content analysis of data collected showed that there are key factors that contribute to enhance and/or limit the sustainability of research results (e.g., funding and institutional support to maintain innovation). Results and recommendations are put forward to inform educational policies, funding agencies and involved actors (e.g., institution leaders, researchers, and teaching staff) to increase the sustainability of research results.

This chapter introduces the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Virtual Library as a tool for linking researchers and agricultural research results. The CGIAR is a strategic alliance of countries, international and regional organizations, and private foundations supporting 15 international agricultural centers that work in partnership with national agricultural research institutions and societies. The research results generated are numerous and cover a wide range of subject fields. While these are properly documented, locating relevant and timely information across the system’s 15 centers is a long and tedious process as individual databases have to be searched. The CGIAR virtual library (CGVLibrary) project of the CGIAR Libraries and Information Services Consortium (CGIARLISC) was created in 2005 to address the difficulty of information retrieval across the various centers. It is now available via the WWW (http://vlibrary.cgiar.org/) and knowledge generated by the CGIAR can now be retrieved with a few mouse clicks.

The paper focuses on the digital teaching and research practices which make an indispensable integral component of upscale education. The authors compare traditional approaches to education against the much demanded by the society, promising approaches which heavily rely on the digital engines. Most relevant –education-wise –features of centennials / millennials, also referred to as “digital natives”, are taken into account. The digital teaching practices and digital research practices that can be used in teaching are outlined; teaching and research potential of some digital engines is examined. Corpus-based experiment along with the analysis of search engine results, cultural-linguistic research through Google and Yandex searching, Tropes Zoom’s content analysis and some other methodological novelties that can be used in the classroom as well as facilitate and substantiate the research results are analysed.

You have reached the mandatory retirement age of 65 and gave your farewell lecture on 6 June last. High time to have an interview with you! After Itinerario was founded by George Winius and you in 1976, you yourself did many of the interviews. Interviews were and still are rather uncommon in scholarly journals. Why did you start them?It was a mixture of egoism and curiosity. We meant the journal to be a research journal, so apart from publishing articles we had two things in mind: to speak with prominent people active in the field and also to do special reports on archives and research institutions. George and I loved to ask colleagues about their backgrounds, their personal interests and their approaches to teaching and research. The interviews worked out well, but it turned out to be very difficult to find people who were willing to write about their experiences in foreign archives.

The article reveals the experience of implementing the educational and scientific program “Professional Education” for applicants of the third (educational and scientific) level of higher education specialty 015 Professional Education (by specializations) at Alfred Nobel University. Features and purpose of the educational and scientific program “Professional Education”, as well as its structure (educational and scientific components) are described. The volume of the educational component of the educational and scientific program is given – 45 ECTS credits, of which the cycle of general (18 ECTS credits) and professional (27 ECTS credits) training, including the discipline of free choice of applicants (12.5 ECTS credits). Particular attention in the educational and scientific program is paid to the content of competencies sufficient to solve complex problems in the field of professional and / or research and innovation in the field of education. A brief description of the content of the scientific component of the program, which provides for the implementation of their own basic and / or applied research with the appropriate design of the obtained scientific results in the form of a dissertation, testing of research results. Methodological approaches (systemic, competence, activity, andragogic, student-centered, personality-oriented, participatory, environmental, integrative) and principles (systematization, scientificity, systematicity and consistency, clarity, integration of theory and practice, consciousness and activity) are substantiated and defined. Independence and activity of subjects in training, interdisciplinary connections, a positive emotional background of training, maintenance of unity of educational, developmental and educational functions are put into practice in the educational and scientific program. The main types of classes, methods and means of teaching future doctors of philosophy are identified. Emphasis is placed on the peculiarities of graduate research activities of graduate students. Ways of realization of individual educational trajectory for each postgraduate student are demonstrated (drawing up of the individual curriculum; a choice of the block of disciplines from a selective component at one’s own will, choosing the subjects of scientific and practical research works according to the interests of applicants of higher education; the organization of independent work of applicants by means of educational computer programs and electronic textbooks; certification courses for the formation of additional professional competencies; distance education; drawing up an individual schedule of graduate students; types of communication between research and teaching staff with applicants; participation in various extracurricular activities). Emphasis is placed on the scientific achievements of higher education seekers (publications in professional journals, collections of scientific papers, reporting the results at annual scientific and practical conferences, publication of research results in a foreign language in periodicals, participation in the research work of the Department of Innovation Technologies in Pedagogy, Psychology and Social Work, scientific and pedagogical internship, etc.).

Recently cloud computing has offered attractive solutions for academic and research institutions due to several reasons. In this chapter, the authors present a study of how cloud computing can be used for research and teaching activities in higher educational and research institutions in developing countries. Instead of focusing on cloud computing offering for basic IT infrastructures used in daily work of these institutions, the authors concentrate on the use of cloud computing for satisfying ad hoc needs of computing resources in research and teaching activities. Thorough analyses of research and teaching activities, requirements for cloud computing, benefits of utilizing cloud computing, and adoption barriers for these activities are also included. The authors then present the selected challenges in tackling these barriers and discuss possible approaches for solving these challenges and report lessons learned and experiences in utilizing and developing cloud computing solutions for teaching and research activities in Vietnam.

PurposeThis paper aims to design a collaborative model amongst faculty and librarian to support teaching and research congruent with the Vietnamese context.Design/methodology/approachThe mix-method research is used in three stages to (1) study the situation and problems of faculty-librarian collaboration by using semi-structured interviews with 29 participants, (2) survey factors influencing the collaboration from 455 samples, (3) evaluate and arrange the influence level of factors from 18 experts' perspectives.FindingsThe research results show that in order to enhance the quality and gain goals of the collaboration, it is necessary to meet three elements, in which universities must (1) meet essential conditions and factors, (2) identify collaborative objectives and activities, collaborative process/guidelines, and evaluating collaboration; and (3) clarify the participation and support of stakeholders to achieve common outcomes.Research limitations/implicationsThis study carried out with representatives for key informant group at four universities in Vietnam, thus, the research results could not cover all current situation of the faculty–librarian collaboration at universities.Originality/valueThis paper provides the detail picture of faculty–librarian collaboration practices and factors having influence this activity at Vietnamese universities. Then, the findings help administrators, faculty and librarians understand and deploy a reasonable plan in accordance with the university's features to enhance the effectiveness and success of the faculty–librarian collaboration.
