Okra fruit contains phenolic compounds as natural antioxidant. The aim of this research was to analyze the effect of different types of fertilizers on production and quality of two okra varieties. The experiment was conducted in October 2017 to February 2018 at Bogor Agricultural University experimental field at Leuwikopo, Darmaga, Bogor (-6033’49.3”SL, 106043’30.7’’EL). The experiment used nested randomized complete block design with 2 factors and 4 replications. The first factor consisted of two okra varieties with different colour (red and green okra). The second factor was fertilizer types consisted of no fertilizer, organic (cow manure), combination of organic + inorganic, and inorganic fertilizer. The results showed that fertilizer types significantly affected plant height and fruit N content but did not affect fruit production. Red okra had a higher plant height, lower number of leaves and leaf K content than those of the green okra. The interaction effect of both factors was significant on total phenolic content in fruit and P content in leaf. The highest total phenolic content in fruit was showed by red okra with inorganic fertilizer, although it was not significantly different to those of red okra with combination organic + inorganic fertilizer, and also to green okra with organic fertilizer. The highest P content in leaf was found in red okra without fertilizer, however it was not significantly different to red okra with combination organic + inorganic fertilizer, green okra with organic fertilizer, and green okra with inorganic fertilizer. Keywords: inorganic fertilizer, leaf nutrient, organic fertilizer, phenolic compound

Implications of dietary phenolic compounds for human health and disease prevention have been indicated by a body of literature. A greenhouse pot study was performed to investigate the impacts of fertilizer source and preventive insecticide application on phenolic compound levels in pac choi [Brassica rapa (L.) cv. Mei Qing]. A two-way randomized complete-block design with five replications was used in this experiment. Fertilizer source consisted of two levels: conventional fertilizer (pre-plant application of Osmocote slow-release fertilizer), and organic fertilizer (pre-plant application of vermicompost and fertigation with compost tea and fish emulsion). Insecticide application consisted of three levels: organic (pyrethrin) vs. conventional (permethrin), and a plain water control. At harvest, total phenolics and individual phenolic compounds in pac choi leaves (blades) were analyzed by Folin assay and HPLC, respectively. Head weight of pac choi was significantly higher under conventional fertilizer treatment, while it was not affected by insecticides. Total phenolic content of pac choi was significantly increased by organic fertilizer treatment. HPLC results indicated that organic fertilizer treatment resulted in significantly higher levels of individual phenolic compounds, including chlorogenic acid and ferulic acid. In contrast, preventive insecticide application showed little effect on the phenolics in pac choi. Correlation analysis excluded the influence of plant size (head weight) on phenolic content in pac choi. Differential N-forms, rates of nutrient release, and/or variable nutrient content in organic and conventional fertilizer treatments may contribute to elevated phenolic content in organically fertilized pac choi.

Five shallot varieties namely ‘Bauji’, ‘Bantaeng’, ‘Tuk Tuk’, ‘Rubaru’, and ‘Palasa’ were examined for their leaf pigment, total phenolic content, leaf tissue nutrient analysis, and green shallot production. The experiment was conducted in in Cikabayan greenhouse, IPB University, Dermaga, Bogor, arranged in a randomized complete block design with single factor (variety) and three replications. The observations were carried out three times in the maximum vegetative period, consisting of 20, 30, and 40 days after planting. The result showed that ‘Palasa’ had the highest leaf pigment content, such as chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll, and carotenoid, while the anthocyanin content fluctuated between the varieties and observation times. ‘Palasa’ also had the highest sulfur content in the leaf tissues. On the contrary, ‘Palasa’ had the lowest production compared to other the varieties. Meanwhile, ‘Bantaeng’ had the highest green shallot production, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus content in the leaf tissues. Total phenolic content fluctuated in the five varieties and observation times. The highest total phenolic content was in ‘Tuk Tuk’, observed 20 days after planting. The principal component analysis (PCA) showed that the five shallot varieties formed three clusters. The first was ‘Palasa’, the second cluster was ‘Bauji’, ‘Tuk Tuk’, and ‘Rubaru’, while the third cluster was ‘Bantaeng’. ‘Palasa’ had the highest content of leaf pigment, while Bantaeng had the highest leaf production. Leaf pigment and total phenolic content changed along with the increasing plant age in all varieties.

Antioxidants and flavonoids are beneficial compounds used in the pharmaceutical and food industries that are derived from natural sources. A two-year field experiment was undertaken to investigate the effect of agricultural management practices on the trigonelline content, antioxidant activity measured with DPPH (2,2-Diphenyl-1-Picrylhydrazyl) and FRAP (Fe+++-Reduction, Ferric reducing antioxidant power), total phenolic content, total flavonoids content, and specific flavonoid contents of fenugreek seeds. The treatments examined were sole fenugreek (Sole F) and three intercropping ratios with buckwheat (B) (F:B = 2:1, 1:1, and 1:2), each with three types of fertilizer (chemical fertilizer, integrated fertilizer, and broiler litter). The highest trigonelline content of fenugreek seeds was obtained in F:B = 2:1 fertilized with broiler litter. Compared to Sole F, the fenugreek seeds harvested in the intercropped treatments had higher antioxidant activity, total phenolic content, vitexin, isovitexin, orientin, and isoorientin. The treatment F:B = 2:1 enhanced the antioxidant activity and the content of bioactive compounds. Overall, the addition of organic manure to fenugreek seeds was highly effective at promoting all compounds analyzed in both the sole and the intercrop systems. Our study found that harvested fenugreek seeds from plants that were intercropped with buckwheat and with the application of organic fertilizer enhanced the seed content of antioxidants and flavonoids.
