One of the learning methods in Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University is Small Group Discussion (SGD), which comes in the form of discussions, with 10 until 13 students participating. Satisfaction of group members in cooperating with each other makes SGD run more effectively. Therefore, satisfaction becomes an important factor. SGD creates interactions among group members, while the quality of the interactions is influenced by social intelligence of the group members. This research aims at finding out the correlation between social intelligence and satisfaction of students in cooperating during SGD, as well as finding out how satisfied the students are in doing SGD. The subjects of this research are 274 students of Medical Science Program, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University. The instruments of this research are Social Intelligence scale with reliability coefficient 0,871 and Satisfaction of Group Cooperating scale with reliability coefficient 0,938. The results from the analysis of product moment correlation indicates correlation number of 0,215 with significance level of 0,000 (p<0,05), which means there is a significant correlation between social intelligence and satisfaction of students in cooperating during SGD participated by the students of Medical Science Program, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University. Higher social intelligence results in higher satisfaction level of students in cooperating, and vice versa. Keywords: social intelligence, satisfaction of group members in cooperating, Small Group Discussion

In the traditional classroom, talk is usually considered noise that must be controlled, but there is mounting evidence that talk is vital to learning and education. Implementing a change from the traditional classroom to one that values talk is not a simple matter. Computer technology may provide a solution. However, our understanding of how computer-mediated communication systems affect patterns of interaction is severely limited. Research into the nature of interaction demonstrates that interaction does not normally consist of a succession of disconnected remarks but is a collaborative effort. Consequently, it is important for participants to be able to identify not only for whom a message was intended but also the position of that message in an ongoing sequence of messages. A major disadvantage of current CMC design is that it can be structurally difficult to relate previous messages. Therefore, the primary purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a redesigned user interface on the structure of interaction between group members in a small-group discussion. It was found that a graphic-based interface significantly reduced isolate messages as well as increasing sustained multichannel interaction.

Introduction: Physiology has traditionally been taught through lectures, but other methods are now being tried. One of these, the small group discussion (SGD), is considered to be more tuned to learners’ needs compared to the lecture. Aim: This study was undertaken to determine learner perceptions on the lecture and the SGD as teaching/learning methods in physiology. Methods: Ninety-seven first MBBS students were taught Physiology in both lecture and SGD formats for a whole year. Feedback was then obtained from the students using a validated and structured questionnaire. Data was entered in Excel sheet and analyzed using SPSS software. Results and Discussion: Learners felt that both the lecture and the SGD helped them understand basic principles well (93.4 and 93.3%), contributed effectively to the learning process (84.6 and 90%) and fostered critical thinking skills (64.9 and 68.9%). For delivery of basic concepts, learners preferred the lecture for its systematic presentation. SGDs were perceived to promote active participation of learners (85.6%), encourage facilitator-learner interaction (87.8), and retain student interest better (62.2%).Overall, learning was better-stimulated by the SGD (73.4%) rather than the lecture (35.2%). Conclusion: In the teaching/learning of physiology, appropriate use of both the lecture and the SGD will serve to nurture and sustain learner interest effectively. The problems always occur in teaching and learning English as a foreign language, and these depend on teachers and students as the center of that process. The teachers have to use appropriate strategy in order to engage the students to achieve their aims of learning. In teaching writing, the teachers always use conventional way such as give the topic and ask the students to write and collect it. There is not any feedback from teachers to students’ work. Small group discussion plays important role since it helps the students to help one another to produce good quality of writing product. It also helps the students to have confidence, and the students will get sense of social values in their life.
