AbstractThe results of studies of the effect of different amounts of the Fe-Ti inoculant on structure and selected mechanical properties of High Chromium Cast Iron (conventionally abbreviated as HCCI) are presented. The main purpose of the inoculation is structure refinement and hence the improvement of casting properties. Generally considered a strong carbide-forming element, titanium is an effective inoculant for the high chromium cast iron. However, there is an optimal amount of titanium addition beyond which the mechanical properties begin to deteriorate. The studies enabled determining the amount of Fe-Ti inoculant optimal for the cast iron of a given chemical composition.

The type, shape and distribution of carbide take directly effect on the mechanical properties of high chromium castings. Vanadium is able to stabilize the structure of carbide in high chromium cast iron, meanwhile the hardness of carbide containing vanadium can reaches about 2800HV. In some cases, vanadium can also refine the microstructure. Rare-earth is able to change the shape of carbide in cast iron, refine the grain size of ferrite and improve the mechanical properties of castings. In this experiment, intention of adding vanadium and rare-earth is modification of mechanical properties with the proper heat treatment technology. With the help of SEM, the characteristics of carbide, such as shape, distribution and quantity can be observed and mechanical properties have been improved for better wear-resistance.

The solidification process of a high chromium cast iron grate bar used for sinter machine was simulated, and high temperature oxidation resistance was also investigated. The simulation result shows that sequence solidification can be achieved and no shrinkage cavity and porosity were observed. Based on the analysis of the microstructure, it could be known that the grate bar was well protected by the Fe3O4、Fe2O3 and Cr2O3 oxide films at temperatures lower than 800°C.
