Background: Ischemic tolerance has been evaluated by the balloon test occlusion (BTO) for cerebral aneurysms and tumors that might require parent artery occlusion during surgery. However, because of its invasiveness, a non-invasive evaluation method is needed. In this study, we assessed the possibility of virtual test occlusion using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) as a non-invasive alternative to BTO for evaluating ischemic tolerance. Methods: Twenty-one patients who underwent BTO were included in the study. Virtual test occlusion was performed using CFD analysis, and the flow rate (FR) and wall shear stress (WSS) of the middle cerebral artery on the occlusion side were calculated. The correlations between these parameters and examination data including the parameters of computed tomography perfusion during BTO were assessed and the cutoff value of CFD parameters for detecting the good collateral group was calculated. Results: The FR was strongly correlated with mean transit time (MTT) during BTO and moderately correlated with collateral flow grade based on angiographic appearance. The WSS was moderately correlated with collateral flow grade, mean stump pressure (MSP), and MTT. Furthermore, the FR and WSS were strongly correlated with the total FR and the diameters of the inlet vessels. The cutoff value of FR for detecting the good collateral group was 126.2 mL/min, while that of the WSS was 4.54 Pa. Conclusion: The parameters obtained through CFD analysis were correlated with collateral flow grade and MSP in addition to MTT. CFD analysis may be useful to evaluate ischemic tolerance as a non-invasive alternative to BTO.

In order to evaluate the performance of airfoils with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools, modelling of transitional region in the boundary layer is very critical. Currently, there are several classes of transition-based turbulence model which are based on different methods. Among these, the k-kL- ω, which is a three equation turbulence model, is one of the prominent ones which is based on the concept of laminar kinetic energy. This model is phenomenological and has several advantageous features. Over the years, different researchers have attempted to modify the original version which was proposed by Walter and Cokljat in 2008 to enrich the modelling capability. In this article, a modified form of k-kL-ω transitional turbulence model has been used with the help of OpenFOAM for an investigative CFD analysis of a NACA 4-digit airfoil at range of angles of attack.

Brush seals are a mature technology that has generated extensive experimental and theoretical work. Theoretical models range from simple correlations with experimental results to advanced numerical approaches coupling the bristles deformation with the flow in the brush. The present work follows this latter path. The bristles of the brush are deformed by the pressure applied by the flow, by the interference with the rotor and with the back plate. The bristles are modeled as linear beams but a nonlinear numerical algorithm deals with the interferences. The brush with its deformed bristles is then considered as an anisotropic porous medium for the leakage flow. Taking into account, the variation of the permeability with the local geometric and flow conditions represents the originality of the present work. The permeability following the principal directions of the bristles is estimated from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) calculations. A representative number of bristles are selected for each principal direction and the CFD analysis domain is delimited by periodicity and symmetry boundary conditions. The parameters of the CFD analysis are the local Reynolds number and the local porosity estimated from the distance between the bristles. The variations of the permeability are thus deduced for each principal direction and for Reynolds numbers and porosities characteristic for brush seal. The leakage flow rates predicted by the present approach are compared with experimental results from the literature. The results depict also the variations of the pressures, of the local Reynolds number, of the permeability, and of the porosity through the entire brush seal.

Introduction: Intracranial atherosclerotic steno-occlusive disease (ICAS) is a major cause of stroke worldwide and portends a high risk of recurrence. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a novel technique developed to solve and analyze the dynamic effects of fluid flow. We aimed to analyse hemodynamics across ICAS using CFD on processed CTA images and explore the correlation between the degree of arterial stenosis and hemodynamic flow status. Methods: We recruited patients with symptomatic ICAS from Acute Stroke Unit, Prince of Wales Hospital. All patients received CTA and DSA as vascular workup. Using CFD analysis of processed CTA images, we first defined the hemodynamic parameters, including pressure difference, pressure ratio, pressure gradient, shear strain rate ratio (SSR), wall shear stress (WSS) ratio and velocity ratio, across the stenosed vessels, and then we correlated the severity of stenosis as defined by DSA, with these parameters. Results: Among the 53 recruited patients (mean age 62.9 years, 69.8% males), 45 (85%) had lesions in the anterior circulation. The severity of stenosis showed a weak-to-moderate correlation with pressure difference (rs=0.392, p=0.004), pressure ratio (rs=-0.429, p=0.001) and pressure gradient (rs=0.419, p=0.002). There was no significant correlation between the severity of stenosis with SSR ratio, WSS ratio and velocity ratio. Among patients with anterior circulation stroke or TIA, the severity of stenosis showed a weak to moderate correlation with pressure difference (rs=0.381, p=0.01), pressure ratio (rs=-0.426, p=0.004) and pressure gradient (rs=0.407, p=0.005). For patients with posterior circulation stroke or TIA, the severity of stenosis was strongly correlated with pressure difference (rs=0.714, p=0.047) and pressure ratio (rs=-0.714, p=0.047); and very strongly correlated with velocity ratio (rs=0.833, p=0.01). Conclusions: The severity of ICAS showed only weak-to-moderate correlation with hemodynamic parameters across the culprit lesion. Thus, risk stratification and treatment based solely on stenotic severity may be inadequate. Our findings may guide further research in estimating stroke risks and selection of high-risk patients who may benefit from adjunctive treatments.

The performance of a Rotor-Casing Assembly is influenced more by the internal air leakages than by any other thermo-fluid aspect of its behaviour. The pressure difference driving the air along a leakage path varies periodically and does so in a manner that may not be the same for every leakage path. So the distribution of leakage through the various leakage paths within the machine is important for the improvement of its performance. The total volume of air leakage and the distribution of the leakage among the different paths depend on the rotor-rotor and rotor-casing clearances as well as the geometry of the rotors’ lobes. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis was carried out using the FLUENT. Geometry definition, mesh generation, boundary and flow conditions, and solver parameters have all been investigated as the part of the numerical analysis. This analysis was conducted for static rotors at different positions. The results indicate that the size of the clearances as well as the geometry of the rotors’ lobes can have a significant effect on the total volume of the air leakage as well as the distribution of the leakage among the three main leakage paths. The results can be used to ascertain the proper levels of clearances to be used and the best rotor lobes geometry to be used for the practical reduction of air leakage.
