Between 1986-1997, large butterfly and moth fau-na was examined in the Lake Baláta Nature Reserve (So-mogy county). In 1987, a light trap was operated for a year in Kanizsaberek, the closest settlement to the protected area, and the further faunistic investigation was carried out by light-ing in the other three points of the protected area. The but-terflies were collected along forest roads, the narrow-gauge railway and deforestation area. During the investigation, 68 butterfly and 401 moth species were found. 8190 specimens were collected by the light trap, which belonging to 367 spe-cies. According to cited literature and the present study, the number of species known from the area is 504 (73 butterflies, 431 moths). The fauna is characterized by the high number of birch and alder consumer species, which can be related to the the moorland. The number of protected species is 43 and 5 species of Natura 2000 (Lycaena dispar, Maculinea naus-ithous, Maculinea teleius, Proserpinus proserpina, Euplagia quadripunctaria) were found.

A list of flowering plants has been compiled for the Augrabies Falls National Park, which occupies an area of approximately 18 600 ha. This list of 364 species represents 210 genera and 74 families. The Monocotyledonae are represented by 76 species (20.9 of the total number of species) and the Dicotyledonae by 288 (79.1 ). Approximately 54 of these species occur only in the Augrabies Falls National Park and not in one of the other conservation areas with which it was compared. According to the life form spectrum, the Augrabies Falls National Park is a therophyte-hemicryp- tophyte area. Five of these spesies are endemic to the Southern African floristic region. One of them is a rare species.

Suphisellus shorti sp. n. is described from “Los Llanos”, Venezuela, which brings to six the number of species includedin the Noteridae genus Suphisellus Crotch, 1873 recorded in this country. Specimens were collected in The Plains regionin Venezuela (Apure and Guarico states) using either a light trap or a net. Description and illustration of the new speciesare provided along with a discussion of its systematic position. The new species can be distinguished from the other spe-cies of the genus by the following main characters: crease at posterolateral angle of pronotum weakly marked; numerous setae covering entire surface of prosternal process and medial part of prosternum; shape of male genitalia.

Abstract Wetlands, in which peat lands are included, as valuable ecosystems are strongly dependent of water that should be saved. On the other hand, peat is a valuable resource e.g. used in gardening. In this paper hydrologic research for evaluation of influence of excavation sites on the water conditions in raised bog have been presented. One of the Polish peat mines is directly adjacent to the natural raised bog that is a protected nature reserve and situated in the area of Natura 2000. The first attempts of industrial peat excavation, in the area, took place in 1970 (more than 40 years ago). Research on groundwater level, peat moisture and precipitation has been carried out. It has been proved that raised bogs of meaningful environmental values situated in the vicinity of the excavation site preserve their ecological value. The study shown that it is worth to protect raised bog even in such inconvenient situation. Some recommendation to preserve the natural value of the raised bog has been given.

It was not until the late Middle Ages that the sea penetrated far into the interior of The Netherlands, thus flooding three quarters of a million hectares of land. Since then half a million hectares have been reclaimed from the sea. The Dutch Government chose to preserve the remaining quarter of a million hectares of shallow sea with mudflats of the Waddensea as a nature reserve. The management objectives are at one hand to preserve all characteristic habitats and species with a minimal interference by human activities in geomorphological and hydrological processes, and at the other hand to guarantee the safety against the sea of the inhabitants of the adjacent mainland and islands and to facilitate certain economic and recreational uses of the Waddensea without jeopardizing the natural qualities. These objectives are being elaborated in managementplans.

Cores and chopping tools are very numerous at Windmill Hill, Avebury Down, Grime's Graves, and Cissbury. They are characteristic of the industry. In the main they differ markedly from the cores of the prism industries. True prisms are rare in the one and numerous in the other; the one shows comparatively broad, the other comparatively narrow facets and flakes; the flakes of the latter being on the whole thinner and finer. It is noteworthy that when the flints of both industries have lain near the surface, those of the one in Herts., Wilts., Sussex, Norfolk, and Suffolk are almost invariably white or light blue; whilst those of the other range from light blue, through dark blue, to unchanged black or grey; with a partial exception, easy of explanation, on the coast of Cornwall. The “lumps” may be divided into a number of species. Some were cores only, others were tools for chopping, cutting, scraping, pecking, boring, or clearing out split marrow bones; some were cores first and tools afterwards.
