Abstract: when adopting a Vygotskian approach to teacher education, it is believed that social interaction between an experienced teacher and a novice one has the potential to propel teacher development as the former provides mediation that is responsive to the latter’s current needs. With this in mind, the present study is aimed at investigating how a novice English as a foreign language teacher develops her understanding regarding the teaching of listening as she is mediated by a more experienced other who uses the teacher’s manual suggestions as a starting point to inquire into her practice. To do so, the study counted on nine classroom observations which were followed by interviews in which a more experienced peer mediated the teacher towards a better understanding of her teaching, using the teacher’s manual to elucidate the pedagogical concepts behind the textbook activities. Results indicate that responsive mediation provided to the teacher led her to revisit her practice, imbue it with meaning, and consequently (re)conceptualize it as the teacher’s professional activity seemed to have become closer to a communicative one – in consonance to the teacher’s manual suggestions – both her actions and justifications reverberating the moments of interaction with the more experienced teacher. In short, the study illustrates how interaction with a more experienced peer may potentially allow teachers to (re)conceptualize their teaching and, consequently, develop in the profession. Keywords: social interaction; responsive mediation; teacher development; teaching listening.

This article provides arguments for incorporating bottom-up practice activities into listening instruction at university EFL classroom. It begins with a brief overview of the current research into listening, followed by a review of main processing components involved in speech comprehension. Also, the paper discusses Ukrainian pre-service teachers’ major listening difficulties and reasons which prevent them from developing listening fluency in English. The role of the speech processor in the process of teaching listening comprehension has been determined. Psycholinguistic peculiarities of its development are discussed. It is proved that a well-developed L2 speech processor will ensure adequate perception of foreign speech and auditory self-control of one’s own articulation. Activities for enriching Ukrainian university students’ L2 perceptual experience (transcribing, noticing exercises) and training their L2 pronunciation (reading aloud, shadow reading) are suggested. Finally, it is concluded that improvement in speech perception makes listening process increasingly automatic, which in turn makes the development of top-down listening skills more effective.

Phonetics is the study of sounds to read letters correctly. It can also be defined as the ease of communication, if theory and practice both agree about the communicative function when learning a foreign language. Drama has been used in language teaching as a creative tool that motivates and lowers the anxiety level of the learners. This paper seeks the effectiveness of using drama in the teaching of phonetics in an EFL setting. After using drama in education in the teaching of pronunciation, the results show that students are more successful in acquiring the sound system compared with traditional teaching.   Keywords: Phonetics, EFL, ELT, drama, learning through drama.

This article deals with the special fork of speech activity - listening (hearing). The focus is on the receptive nature of this component of learning a foreign language. Based on the methodology of studying the problem, in this study, listening is understood as the internal form of the human activities associated with many aspects of mental properties of the person. Noting the multidimensional nature of hearing, the authors emphasize the involvement in the processes of perceptual (perception), thinking (analysis, synthesis, induction, deduction, etc.) and mnemonic activity (the formation of certain images, the ability to learn and recognize them as the result of pattern matching in memory). Studying the direct relationship of listening comprehension with verbal communication within the communicative approach to foreign language learning, the authors argue the need for the development of listening skills, without which the process of communication in the language impossible. The formation of listening skills promotes thinking by using visual and sound images, helping to recreate a complete picture of what is happening. Based on my own pedagogical experience, the study authors believe it is necessary to pay attention to non-verbal supports in the process of communication and perception of information aurally much attention, such as gestures, facial expressions, touch and other, which are designed to reinforce auditory sensation, and to facilitate the process of perception and information processing.

The essential role of the listening competence in Second Language Teaching, and the new rhythm of advancement in the new Internet epoch call for a paradigmatic reform of teachers’ roles, contents and functions in teaching listening skill in order to guarantee a successful forward-looking process. Considering this context, this study highlights an innovative academic experience in Albania consisting of a special class website integrated in teaching English listening skills to Albanian university students as well as creating and implementing a demanding listening curriculum at an FCE level; this project and the analysis of its results follow a comparative approach at all stages. This paper aims at examining the efficiency of website compared with traditional means of teaching listening in English, by analyzing and assessing the difference between the level of the experimental group’s performance and that of the control group during the listening practice. The actual comparison of results, which involves the assessment of their scores in two special tests, one taken before the project and one after its completion, shows that both learning environments have their merits in helping them progress with their listening competence. However, the amount of progress made by the students of the two groups is not identical, as there is a significant difference in favour of the experimental group, which, as our statistical analysis carried out by the help of the SPSS program shows, is ample proof of the advantage that the use of websites brings to the process of developing one’s listening competence in a foreign language.
