The article deals with the meaning of intertextual reading of "The Master and Margarita". The text of the novel is considered as a model of counterculture, from the standpoint of which the author chooses those literary codes from which his own model of literary behavior is built. These dominant codes are manifested in the course of decoding as a result of correlation of intertextual borrowings. This takes into account not only external borrowings, but also the relationship within the novel and the relationship of the novel with other Bulgakov’s texts. Special attention is paid to such signs of borrowing as a suit and money. As the keys to the novel, "The Inspector General", "The Covetous Knight" and "The Count of Monte Cristo" are updated, and the novel itself represents the act of retaliation of the author and the implementation of his inner freedom. Besides, the novel affirms the priority of genuine art over reality.

The article deals with the semantic field of the theater in "The master and Margarita", which extends to all novel chronotopes and can be structured as a two-level one. Considering different cases of theatricalization of space and different signs of theatricality in the novel, the authors correlate the real theater (theatre as a historical reality ) and the literary theater (the art of acting ) and actualize the confrontation of literature and historical reality in "The Master and Margarita". The text of the novel is considered as a model of counterculture, from the standpoint of which the author chooses those literary codes from which his own model of theatrical behavior is built. At the same time, special attention is paid to the actualization of the metaphor "theater - court" and the semantics of exposure, and the novel itself is an act of vengeance of the author and the implementation of his inner freedom. As an example of such an artistic concept of the relationship between art and life, the film "Once upon a time... in Hollywood" by Tarantino is considered.

The purpose of this paper is to present the description of Woland as one of the main characters of the novel by Bulgakov 'The Master and Margarita', after gaining experience connected with the work on a new translation of this book. The study was conducted on the basis of an in‑depth analysis of the text. The author distinguishes the roles in which Woland appears in relationships with other characters, as well as mental and physical transformations which he undergoes. A lot of remarks concern the changes in stylistic register of his utterances. Moreover, the analysis includes numerous names, which the narrator himself uses in reference to the character. Finally, analogies with other authors are presented (Goethe, Gogol, Poe). The paper is an attempt at reconstructing the viewpoint represented by Woland, including the multitude of elements referring to particular philosophical, political and ethical doctrines. It all leads to the conclusion that Bulgakov’s devil is a multidimensional and ambiguos character, which doesn’t conform to any traditions and explicit interpretations.

Настоящая статья посвящена исследованию особенностей прагматической адаптации разговорной лексики при переводе на английский язык романа М. А. Булгакова «Мастер и Маргарита». Проблема перевода разговорной лексики рассматривается в статье как разновидность межкультурной коммуникации. В работе рассмотрены примеры перевода разговорных и просторечных выражений, использованных в романе. Анализ примеров проводится на основе рассмотрения двух популярных версий перевода романа «Мастер и Маргарита» на английский язык - Майкла Гленни и Ричарда Пивера и Ларисы Волохонской. Актуальность исследования обусловлена тем фактом, что роман М. А. Булгакова остается популярным в англоязычных странах. Исследователи переводов романа М. А. Булгакова, как правило, уделяют основное внимание трудностям перевода реалий, в частности советизмов, как самой отличительной особенности стиля Булгакова. Перевод разговорной и просторечной лексики, как правило, остается за пределами интереса исследователей, хотя именно эта лексика представляет сложности для перевода и создает общий фон романа. В статье анализируются примеры перевода разговорной лексики и устанавливаются наиболее успешные способы перевода. Анализ материала показал, что не существует единого способа передачи лексических просторечий при переводе на английский язык. Значительная часть найденных единиц при переводе передана с помощью относительных эквивалентов и аналогов. This article is devoted to the study of the features of the pragmatic adaptation of colloquial vocabulary when translating the novel “The Master and Margarita” by M. A. Bulgakov into English. The problem of translating colloquial vocabulary is considered in the article as a kind of intercultural communication. The paper considers the examples of the translation of colloquial words and colloquial expressions used in the novel. The analysis of the examples is based on the consideration of two popular versions of the translation of the novel “The Master and Margarita” into English - by Michael Glennie and Richard Peaver and Larisa Volokhonskaya. The relevance of the study is due to the fact that the novel by M. A. Bulgakov remains popular in English-speaking countries. Researchers of translations of the novel by M. A. Bulgakov, as a rule, pay special attention to the difficulties of translating realia, in particular Sovietisms, as the most distinctive feature of Bulgakov’s style. The translation of colloquial vocabulary, as a rule, remains beyond the interest of researchers, although it is this vocabulary that presents difficulties for translation and creates the general background of the novel. The article analyzes the examples of the translation of colloquial vocabulary and identifies the most successful ways of translation. The analysis of the material showed that there is no single way to transfer lexical colloquialisms when translating into English. A significant part of the found units is transmitted during translation using relative equivalents and analogues.

Anthroponyms in the novel “The Master and Margarita” reveal to us the special world of the novel. Each name, each form of name and context are regular and full of the deepest meaning. The article compares the names in the Turkish translation of the novel. The means of the translating language are a fundamental factor in the equivalence of the translation of names from a linguopragmatic point of view.

The author explores the different stages and artistic devices of Bulgakov’s work on these images in the context of the creative history of the novel. The article, based on an extensive archival research in the Manuscript Collection of Russian State Library, follows the development of the space of light and darkness through a textual analysis of the whole corpus of manuscripts of this novel

When The Master and Margarita first appeared some five years ago in the journal Moskva and soon after in the English translations, it caused the sensation appropriate to long-withheld Russian literary works. On all sides it was hailed as a literary event of broad implications. American and British reviewers, introducing Bulgakov to their reading public, stressed the significance of this thirty-year-old novel in relation to progressive tendencies in contemporary Soviet literature. The novel was also generally assessed as a work of major literary importance in its own right. But there were reservations. Rich in conception and striking in form, The Master and Margarita seemed to many somehow flawed in the execution. These readers found the book extremely attractive on various levels, yet felt, along with the novel's British translator, Michael Glenny, that the keystone had just missed being slipped into place.
