SummaryFive hundred and ten patients receiving long-term in-patient care for schizophrenia were examined in terms of their current mental state, cognitive functioning, neurological status and behavioural performance. The abnormalities of these areas of their present state were related to historical factors, personal details, the features of the illness at its worst and physical treatment received. Significant associations between the present state and historical factors were few and mainly concerned time and the features of the illness at its worst. Current abnormalities were not related to past physical treatment, but highly significant correlations were found between the impairments of the four areas of the present state. It is concluded that these impairments are likely to be an integral part of the disease.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the mental state and the disposition of those who have fallen on hard times during the recent financial crisis and have had their homes foreclosed on or their automobiles repossessed. It also proposes an alternative process for dispossessing individuals that preserves the mental health of such individuals and the banks’ reputation. Design/methodology/approach This study uses the hermeneutics approach to analyze the predicament of those whose homes have been foreclosed on or whose properties have been repossessed by financial institutions to better understand their predicament. Findings Those whose homes have been foreclosed on or whose properties have been repossessed by financial institutions are traumatized. They feel victimized, bitter, helpless and hopeless and have poor mental state. The study draws on theories in counseling psychology to propose an alternative approach to making loans that take long time to be repaid (long-term loans), and for repossessing personal properties such as automobiles and for foreclosing on real property (homes). Research limitations/implications As a qualitative study based on a small sample, the findings of the study are limited to only those who have been studied. A further study that leads to a generalized result will be useful. Practical implications The study develops a practical framework that could be useful to financial institutions in making long-term loans and to foreclose on delinquent loans (i.e. to dispossess individuals). Social implications The proposed strategy, if implemented, could have a significant positive impact on the mental well-being of those who have fallen on financial hard times. Originality/value To the best of the knowledge, this is the first marketing paper that has explored the mental health of those who have defaulted on loans, and has proposed an alternative approach to making long-term loans that not only preserves the mental health of banks’ customers, but also protects the reputation and market share of banks.

This chapter focuses on Georges Gilles de la Tourette’s poetical pursuits. A man of many talents, these poems provide insight into yet another facet of Gilles de la Tourette’s personality. As well, they may provide some clue to his mental state as he suffered from the long-term effects of syphilis. It is difficult to know whether these poems should be taken as initial signs of Gilles de la Tourette’s disease or whether they are a simple manifestation of his imagination and the pleasure he took in writing. His poetry can be found at the family archive in Loundun.

SynopsisA group of 72 long-term patients, who were retained in Friern Hospital until the final stage of its closure programme, underwent a comprehensive psychiatric and social assessment shortly before moving to other hospitals. These patients were then compared with the rest of the long-stay patients who were considered suitable for community placement. The residual group consisted of younger patients with shorter duration of stay, compared with the rest of the hospital population. Although not excessively disabled functionally or physically, the residual patients were slightly more disturbed in mental state in comparison with the rest, with notably higher levels of subjective anxiety.A range of 13 problem behaviours were designated by staff as a direct impediment to placing a patient in a community setting. Most common problem areas were aggressiveness, non-compliance with medication and inappropriate sexual behaviour. Fourteen per cent of the residual group had none of these special problems. Some other patients have remained in hospital solely because they refused to leave. It is argued that a distinction should be made between the residual patients who were actually transferred to other hospitals, and a core group of extremely disturbed patients for whom further hospitalization is likely to be the only alternative.

Abstract: The fitness centers are now places where partners perform «controlled» physical activity, which improves their physical and mental state, and where they socialize with other partners of all ages. These centers have been typically managed by people without training in this subject and with the only interest of obtaining partners without taking into account the long-term impact. This problem, together with management problems of the center and personal problems of the members, have meant that there are high desertion rates in this type of indoor facilities, with the consequent increase in expenditure on marketing and a non-sustainable profitability. We propose a program of physical activity that could improve the rate of loyalty, being the central point of management of sports centers today, the satisfaction and loyalty to the fitness centers.Key words: Loyalty, Senior, Fitness Centres, Physical Activity Programs Through Objectives.

The article discusses the problems of the development of play activity, as a reflection of harmonious and disharmonious mental development, starting from an early age. 4030 preschool children (2720 boys and 1310 girls) were examined. For the long-term observation, 150 people (92 boys and 58 girls) were selected. Methods: clinical-psychopathological, neurological, psychological, using the concept of leading activity, focused on the “zone of proximal development”. The article analyzes the role of toys as material objects used by children of different ages and clinical conditions, in the structure of which disorders of the mental state and play activity were found. The clinical picture of mental disorders was determined by disorders of the neurosis-like, affective level in combination with individual schizotypal stigmas, and behavioral disorders within the autism spectrum disorders. Conclusions are made about the possibility of an adverse effect of certain forms of play and play objects on the mental state and development of schizo- typal disorders and autism spectrum disorders.

Eighty chronic schizophrenic and 16 manic-depressive psychotic patients conforming to Research Diagnostic Criteria were examined in terms of their mental state, cognitive functioning, current behaviour, and neurological status. They comprised out-patients, day-care patients, and long-stay in-patients belonging to two mental hospitals with different social conditions. Assessed deficits were not significantly related to record variables such as age, duration of Illness, duration of hospitalisation, or treatment received. Analysis of the different groups of patients reveals that long-term hospital care has had little effect on the deficits of chronic schizophrenia, and suggests that these are integral features of the disease process.

The admission records of 271 long-stay chronic schizophrenic patients, resident in a large psychiatric hospital, were examined in order to identify those who had presented in stupor at the onset of their illness. Twelve patients were found (ten men and two women). When compared, in terms of current mental state and behaviour, with a similar sample of schizophrenics in whom stupor had been absent, significant differences between the two groups were detected, with those presenting in stupor demonstrating a less favourable outcome.
