Switchable Electrohydrodynamic Capillary Bridges

<p>The deformation of sessile droplets and capillary bridging in a parallel-plate capacitor under DC fields has been the subject of several scientific studies. Coaxially located droplets on opposing electrodes experience an attraction in the presence of an electric field. Application of a suitably large field will lead to either the droplets forming a liquid bridge or oscillation between bridged and de-bridged (i.e. droplet) states. We explored the bridging behavior of a variety of liquids in air. Among the liquids and droplet geometries that could form a stable field-induced bridge, only a limited set could reversibly make and break the capillary bridge by switching the electric field on and off. The ability to form a switchable liquid bridge is a function of both the liquid’s properties, including surface tension, electric conductivity, and dielectric constant, and external conditions such as electrode separation, droplet volume.</p>

A short introduction to the subject of the meeting, IAU Symposium No. 167, New Developments in Array Technology and Applications is given. CCD and Array detectors have become the detectors of choice at optical observatories all over the world. Direct imaging, photometry and spectroscopy are all vastly improved as a result. Thirteen IAU Commissions joined in sponsoring this meeting which indicates the wide interest in this subject. In the five days of the symposium the following topics were discussed: New Developments in CCD Technology, New Developments in IR Detector Arrays, Direct Imaging with CCDs and Other Arrays, Spectroscopy with CCDs and Other Arrays and Large Field Imaging with Array Mosaics. A few papers concerning Astrometry with CCDs were given in the poster sessions. Scientific results were also presented in the poster sessions.


The subject of inquiry appointed by the Croonian Institution, has been greatly elucidated at different times by ingenious members of this learned Society. A large field, however, still remains open; and, respecting future investigations, I shall have occasion to offer a fresh proof of the aid to be derived from comparative anatomy, in ascertaining the structure of parts which, from their minuteness and situation in the human body, admit with much difficulty of being explored. The principal object of the present lecture is to communicate a discovery of the structure of the membrana tympani; which, in some respects, affords a new and very curious instance of the application of muscular action, and may conduce to account for certain phaenomena in the sense of hearing, in a more satisfactory manner than has hitherto been proposed.

In the paper the concept of conductive particle rotation in DC electric field with including the Lorentz force providing generation of electric dipole moment of the particle is for the first time discussed. Some models of the torque transfer to spherical and cylindrical particles based on of the Hall effect at usual geometry and with additional electric field application and also in the case of implementation of the photoelectromagnetic effect are presented.

The present paper is written with no pretence at finality, and consequently some excuse is due for its publication at the present time. The author was induced to write it since the results so far obtained by him do not seem to agree, in all points, with the work previously done on the subject, and tend to show that there is much scope for future work both on this matter and also on a matter of much greater general importance, namely, on the influence of external conditions on a quantitative character.
