Correct seeding of crops under various systems of basic tillage in the crop rotation

Studies conducted at the Tambov Research Institute of Agricultural Research have found that the systems of basic tillage had a significant impact on the contamination of cultivated crops in crop rotations. The use of a permanent surface tillage system in technological complexes of crop cultivation increases the contamination of crops. The traditional multi-depth dump and combined (dump-free) systems of basic tillage in crop rotations are the most effective agrotechnical techniques in clearing fields of weeds.

Buckwheat research has been carried out within the long-term crop rotation stationary that was established in 1969 as a part of the Research institute of Agriculture. Buckwheat proportion within the partcular crop rotations went up to 22%. The highest buckwheat yields were obtained from the buckwheat variants that where cultivated after winter rye, and within the buckwheat monoculture experimental plots. A considerable yield decrease was observed when cultivating buckwheat after potatoes. Weeds in the buckwheat sowing were effectively brought under control by the herbicide Butisane 400 (1.5 l ha-1), applied immediately after sowing and Betanal AM 2.5 l ha-1 after seedling in 2-3 leaves stage.

Nowadays in domestic arable farming sown crop (weed) vegetation is among the leaders as to the harmfulness for agricultural crop yields. Weeds are an annually acting factor which reduces the yields of economically-valuable output in all the regions of Ukraine. It is to be mentioned that in arable farming of the country the yield losses of agricultural crops, caused by weeds, are growing constantly. A serious decrease of public target financing to protect cultivated crops from pests, diseases and weeds resulted in the violation of farm practices in agricultural crop cultivation all over the country. Namely, in all agro-climatic regions of Ukraine well-balanced scientifically-grounded crop rotations were reduced to 3–4 field rotations with 60–70 % share of grain crops. And, without a proper expertise of the farm machinery available at the farms, minimal or zero tillage is used. For example, reduced crop rotation with a dominating share of grain crops led to the increased load, caused by annul application of the same herbicides, and this, in turn, resulted in the appearance of resistant weed kinds in agro-phytocoenoses; the term violation of the weed control measures (first of all, chemical thinning) caused the decrease of their efficiency, particularly in controlling root-sprout weeds. Secondly, climate warming resulted in the increase of weed infestation of the agricultural crop fields due to the fact that most of the weeds survived during winter time and those typical for southern regions moved to the north (barnyard grass, amaranth, nightshade black, milkweed sharp, mallow runty and others). At the same the migration of northern kinds to the south was not recorded. One of the leading measures to regulate a weed component in agro-phytocoenoses is mechanical tillage. The updated tillage system has to be based on the principles of minimization which envisage the reduction of a mechanical effect on the soil aimed at the increasing of its erosion resistance and the optimization of soil fertility indicators. One of the ways to minimize mechanical tillage is to substitute moldboard tillage for mould boardless one, and also to decrease its depth and the number of cultivations. Purpose of the research is to estimate weed infestation of the fodder beet fields when various tillage systems are used. The experiments in five-field crop rotation were carried out in accordance with the theme of the research in a stationary field trial of SPC of Bila Tserkva NAU in 2009-2011. Four systems of tillage were studied. Three-fold replication and compact placing of replications are used; plots of the first order (tillage) are placed in one layer, gradually, systematically. Farm practices of fodder beet cultivation, used in the experiment, are typical to the ones applied in the research institutions and at the advanced farms of the zone. Machines, equipment and mechanisms, which are available at SPC BTsNAU and advanced farm enterprises are equipped with, are used when growing fodder beets. The methodology and organization of the technique of performing the trial facilitated this. Lowing at 30-32 cm depth was done with plow PLN –3–35, mouldboardless tillage – at 30–32 cm depth with subsurface cultivator KPG –250, shelling – at 10–12 cm depth with stubble plow PL – 5–25 and disc harrow BDV –3.0. The largest amount of weed raw mass was recorded under regular tillage with a subsurface cultivator. When differentiated and continuous shallow tillage was done, this indicator was the highest, as compared with the control, in the first year of the trial, and a reverse regularity was recorded in the last year of the trial. The raw mass of one sown crop was the highest under regular mouldboardless tillage, and under differentiated and continuous shallow tillage it was at the level of the control. Under continuous mouldboard, regular mouldboardless, differentiated and continuous shallow tillage this indicator was 3.67; 4.06; 3.71 and 3.73 g in 2009 and 3.37; 3.82; 3.34 and 3.34 g in 2011. A determinative factor, which weed infestation of agricultural crop fields depends on in the period of their vegetation, is light condition of the soil surface in the field. The latter is determined by the peculiarities of plant morphology, their development and sowing practice. In the structure of weed infestation the highest percentage – 20.7 % belongs to amaranth, 15.7 %– to Setaria pumila, 14.2 % – to barnyard grassand 11.1 %– to quinoa white. Under the effect of crop rotation weed grouping is changed (succession) in the period of germination of fodder beets which is connected with both the effect of a forecrop and a fertilization system of crop rotations and variants of tillage. Various ecological and biological factors, including the composition of grass mixtures in crop rotation, affect the state of agrophytocenosis. The purpose of the research was to reveal the regularities of changes in the botanical composition of crops in forage agrophytocenoses depending on the duration of perennial legume-cereal grasses cultivation. The experiment was conducted according to B. A. Dospekhov’s “Methods of field research” on the experimental field of the Mari Research Institute of Agriculture, a branch of the FSBSI “Federal Agricultural Research Center of the North-East” in 2013–2018. In a two-factor field experiment, we studied the botanical composition dynamics in three six-field grain-grass crop rotations and goat-rump grass mixture (Factor A) with and without nitrogen fertilizing against the background of phosphorus-potassium fertilizers (Factor B). Soil of the experimental plots – sod-podzolic mid loamy. The meteorological conditions of the growing seasons were often unfavorable; therefore, the crops were strongly suppressed. The most drought-resistant species (sunflower, winter rye, alfalfa and barley with a mass fraction of 55 %, 97 %, 20 % and 96 %, respectively) had an advantage over weeds in grass mixtures by weight in the spring-summer period during the third rotation of the studied crop rotations. Plants of red clover and white mustard in the catch crop were strongly suppressed by drought. The clover-alfalfa-timothy grass mixture was replaced by forbs from 36 % in mass in the first year of use with a step of 23 % in subsequent years. After the 15-year usage, the second component in the grass mixture monocrop (Galega orientalis Lam. + Bromus inermis Leyss) completely dropped out. Non-sown grasses faster replaced the crop components of the herbage on the fields without nitrogen fertilizing. Thus, the crop rotation fields with the richly diverse crops composition and the nitrogen application were infested with fewer weeds (4.0–10.6 % by mass).

In the light of recent developments, the use of biological techniques in crop cultivation technologies needs to be expanded. The role of crop rotations with a high proportion of legume grasses, green manure crops and intermediate crops is increasing. The purpose of the research is to study soil fertility dynamics in terms of the main nutritional elements and determine their balance for the development of the adaptive landscape farming system in the North-Eastern region of the European part of Russia. Experiments were carried out on the experimental plots of the FARC of the North-East in 2002–2009. Soil – sod-podzolic middle loamy. We analyzed data of a long-term stationary experiment in four grain-fallow-grass field crop rotations. Meteorological conditions during the years of research were close to the average long-term values and favorable for crop cultivation. The introduction of low doses of fertilizers (N45P45K45 as mineral, 11.5–22.5 t/ha as green manure) increased the content of mobile phosphorus in the soil by 11–14 mg/kg (LSD05 = 9.5) in crop rotations with occupied and green manure fallows. An increase in exchangeable potassium by 15 mg/kg (LSD05 = 14.1) was noted in crop rotation with two clover fields for green manure. A positive balance of nitrogen and phosphorus was obtained in crop rotation with occupied and green manure fallows. The nitrogen balance was with a higher intake of +157.8 – +483.5 kg/ha and balance intensity – 115–140 %. The balance of phosphorus has developed at +6.0…+49.6 kg/ha. The positive balance of potassium was only in crop rotations with the introduction of green manure fertilizers and intermediate crop (+69.9…+175.8 kg/ha). The intensity of the balance of these elements was 101–118 %. In the control crop rotation with bare fallow at a minimum intake of nutrients, the negative balance of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium was obtained; the intensity was below 100 %. Productivity of crop rotation was at the level of 4.90–5.41 thousand fodder units. According to the optimal combination of productivity and the balance of nutritional elements, crop rotation with two clover fields for green manure and an intermediate crop stood out.

Annual and perennial grasses are important not only as a source of green fodder, hay, silage, grass meal and haylage in feed production, but also as good forecrops, due to the ability to accumulate biological nitrogen in the soil (since it decreases the cost of mineral fertilizers), to disinfect the soil from micro zoo pests, to improve the physical condition of the soil (since it decreases soil density). Perennial grasses are also an important component of biologized crop rotations, since the amount of crop residues remaining in the soil after harvesting is several times greater than after winter crops. The field trials were conducted in 2009–2016 by the staff of the laboratory of row crop cultivation technology of the FSBSI “Agricultural Research Center “Donskoy”. The experimental plot is located in the southern soil-climatic zone of the Rostov region (with insufficient and unstable moisture). The soil of the experimental plot is ordinary heavy loamy chernozem on loesslike loams, with 3.2% humus, neutral pH, and a high content of movable phosphorus and exchange potassium according to Machigin. The current paper has presented a bioenergetic estimation of grain (4-crop rotation sequence with annual grasses included) and biologized (8-crop rotation sequence with 25% perennial grasses) crop rotations. It has been established that nutrients’ amount per 1 ha of crop rotation area of biologized crop rotation is higher than in grain crop rotation on 22% of dry matter, on 40% of raw protein and on 39% of metabolic energy. Energy consumption per 1 kg of raw protein is lower on 27%.

Infestations of great brome, Bromus diandrus Roth, in a long-term tillage, stubble management and crop rotation trial were studied over 3 years at the Agricultural Research Institute, Wagga Wagga. Herbicides were effective in removing great brome from lupin but this did not prevent carryover to the following wheat crop. Over all years, in the wheat-lupin rotations, burning of stubble significantly reduced great brome infestation in the wheat phase by approximately 39%, while 3 cultivations prior to sowing reduced infestation by approximately 43%. The greatest infestation occurred where direct drilled wheat followed wheat with stubble retained. In a continuous wheat system, a combination of burning and 3 cultivations maintained great brome populations at a low level.

The results of long-term research in experiments with crop rotations with different clover saturation are presented. It is shown that the cluster has a positive effect on the main indicators of vegetation of dark-gray forest soil. The introduction of two fields of perennial grasses into the six-field crop rotation significantly increases both the humus reserves and increases the productivity of arable land by 1.5–2 times compared to the crop rotation with a field of pure steam.

The use of nitrogen fertilizer is becoming a global problem; however continuous fertilization with nitrogen ensures large and constant harvests. An 8 year research (2006–2013) was conducted to evaluate the relationships between differently fertilized cultivated plant rotations. The research was conducted in Lipliunai (Lithuania) in the agroecosystem with nitrogen metabolism in fields with deeper carbonaceous soil, i.e. Endocalcari Endohypogleyic Cambisol (CMg-n-w-can). The research area covered three drained plots where crop rotation of differently fertilized cereals and perennial grasses was applied. Samples of soil, water and plants were investigated in the Chemical Analysis Laboratory of the Aleksandras Stulginskis University certified by the Environment Ministry of the Republic of Lithuania. The greatest productivity was found in a crop rotation with higher fertilization (N32-140). In crop rotation with lower fertilization (N24-90) productivity of cereals and perennial grasses (N0-80) was 11–35 % lower. The highest amount of mineral soil nitrogen was found in cereal crop rotation with higher fertilization. It was influenced by fertilization and crop productivity. The lowest Nmin and Ntotal concentrations in drainage water were found in grasses crop rotation. Crop rotations of differently fertilized cereals increased nitrogen concentration in drainage water. Nmin concentration in water depended on crop productivity, quantity of mineral soil nitrogen, fertilization, and nitrogen balance. The lowest nitrogen leaching was found in the crop rotation of grasses. Cereal crop rotation increased nitrogen leaching by 12–42 %. The usage of all crop rotations resulted in a negative nitrogen balance, which essentially depended on fertilization with nitrogen fertilizer.
