It is presented in detail how the selection of a structural model describing steel hall frame in a more or less complex way may affect fire resistance evaluation for such hall. In the examples compiled in this paper the same typical one-aisle and single-story steel hall is subjected to simulated fire action, each time following the same fire development scenario. A resultant fire resistance is identified individually in each case, using various computational models, on an appropriate static equilibrium path obtained numerically. It is shown that the greater the simplification of the model used, the more overstated the estimated fire resistance is in relation to its real value. Such an overestimation seems to be dangerous to the user, as it gives him an illusory but formally unjustified sense of the guaranteed safety level.

FDS 6). The brief analysis of definitions connected with estimation of fire resistance limits of building structures is conducted. There is given the determination of term “actual fire resistance limit” that is absent in fire safety normative documents. It is caused by practical application of the fire resistance limits determined for standard temperature regimes of fires only, but at the same time the temperature regimes of real fires as a rule differ from the standard regimes. There is proposed the method for determination of the actual fire resistance limit based on the modeling of influence of the real fire temperature regime on buildings structures. This modeling can be made by an application of CFD methods (for example, with the help of FDS 6 software complex). The required reliability of the building structure is considered. The proposed method can solve the problem of practical applicability of certain structural unit during designing buildings and structures, for which the use of the resistance limits obtained for the standard fire temperature regimes can lead to unjustified economic expenditures without an appropriate elevation of fire safety level of the object.

ABSTRACT First Person is a series of interviews with the first authors of a selection of papers published in Journal of Cell Science, helping early-career researchers promote themselves alongside their papers. Jia Yu and Pei-Ju Liao are co-first authors on ‘ Structural model of human PORCN illuminates disease-associated variants and drug-binding sites’, published in JCS. Jia is a senior postdoc in the lab of David Virshup at Duke-NUS Medical School, Singapore, investigating Wnt secretion and signalling; in particular, how Wnt trafficking and secretion is regulated by two integral membrane proteins, porcupine and WLS. Pei-Ju is a research assistant in the same lab, investigating protein–protein interactions in the systems biology of signalling pathways using protein structure modelling and protein complex simulation.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify and model the evaluation criteria for the selection of third-party logistics service provider (3PLSP) by an interpretive structural modelling (ISM) approach in the pharmaceutical sector. Design/methodology/approach Delphi technique was used for identifying the most significant criteria, and the ISM method was employed for developing the interrelationship among the criteria. Also, the critical criteria for having high influential power were identified by using the Matrice d’Impacts Croisés Multiplication Appliqués à un Classement analysis. Findings The most significant factors, namely, capability of robust supply network/distribution network, quality certification and health safety, service quality and environmental quality certifications, were found to have a high driving power, and these factors demand the maximum attention of the decision makers. Research limitations/implications As the ISM approach is a qualitative tool, the expert opinions were used for developing the structural model, and the judgments of the experts could be biased influencing the reliability of the model. The developed hierarchical concept is proposed to help the executives, decision and policy makers in formulating the strategies and the evaluation of sustainable 3PLSP. Originality/value It is an original research highlighting the association between the sustainable 3PLSP evaluation criteria by employing ISM tool in the pharmaceutical industry. This paper will guide the managers in understanding the importance of the evaluation criteria for the efficient selection of 3PLSP.

Background: Malaria or Paludism is a tropical disease caused by parasites of the Plasmodium genre and transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitos of the Anopheles genre. This pathology is considered one of the first causes of death in tropical countries and, despite several existing therapies, they have a high toxicity. Computational methods based on Quantitative Structure- Activity Relationship studies have been widely used in drug design work flows. Objective: The main goal of the current research is to develop computational models for the identification of antimalarial hit compounds. Materials and Methods: For this, a data set suitable for the modeling of the antimalarial activity of chemical compounds was compiled from the literature and subjected to a thorough curation process. In addition, the performance of a diverse set of ensemble-based classification methodologies was evaluated and one of these ensembles was selected as the most suitable for the identification of antimalarial hits based on its virtual screening performance. Data curation was conducted to minimize noise. Among the explored ensemble-based methods, the one combining Genetic Algorithms for the selection of the base classifiers and Majority Vote for their aggregation showed the best performance. Results: Our results also show that ensemble modeling is an effective strategy for the QSAR modeling of highly heterogeneous datasets in the discovery of potential antimalarial compounds. Conclusion: It was determined that the best performing ensembles were those that use Genetic Algorithms as a method of selection of base models and Majority Vote as the aggregation method.

Managing ageing and remaining lifetime of an industrial facility is a concern that must be taken in account by utility as soon as possible in daily activities. The corresponding actions engaged in France are based on 3 major step that are described in the paper: • routine maintenance, • exceptional maintenance, • systematic and periodic review of safety important components and structures sensitive to ageing to assure the effectiveness of the maintenance actions and maintain a high safety level of the plant with a good competitiveness. Following different on-going programs on ageing management of different components, EDF developed its own approach, based on IAEA guidelines, in order to systematically review all the ageing management programs implemented on its 3-loop plants. The methodology is done in 3 steps: • selection of components and justification, • degradation mechanism analysis, • synthesis and consequences on maintenance programs. After a presentation of each step of the procedure a quick overview of the status of application in France is done. Comparison of the methodology with similar methodology used in different other countries is done to close the paper.
