BOOK PUBLISHING IN UKRAINE: THE FACTORS OF EVELOP

This article is devoted to analysis of the modern problems of book publishing in the context of national information space. Development of the Ukrainian state is impossible without development of national book publishing, which is a part of its information space. In Ukraine, as one of the post-Soviet states, the formation of new information and communication system is based on its own information tradition, mentality and features of spiritual culture of the Ukrainians. It plays an important role in shaping culture, spirituality, comprehensive vision and consciousness of the nation. They were and they are a source of knowledge and the most effective way of its transfer. The transience of processes occurring the era of information society, radical socio-economic reforms, sectoral technological revolution requires the continuous scientific researches and analysis, identifying the trends in publishing industry as one of the most important factors in the state’s democratic progress. The author summarizes the development of book publishing of Ukraine and shows its role and place in the modern information society. The study of the modern book publishing is impossible without digression into the past, without finding out the roots of studying of the analysis object. The specific problems of the book industry are identified. It is concluded that in the modern Ukraine the publishing business has intensified, although the positive changes are taking place very slowly: the appropriate economic conditions for development of the publishing industry have not been created, the equipment are outdated; editorial, publishing and printing equipment of domestic manufacture are nonavailable; introduction of advanced technology are low; purchasing ability of the population is low; the sales network of printed products has been destroyed and so on. The businesses are becoming increasingly uneconomical. We propose some measures to improve this situation, strengthening the role of industry in the national information space. The key to improve the situation may be systematic and persistent efforts of the Ukrainian government to support the industry.The reason is that a comprehensive study requires from the performers not only historical knowledge, but also economic, managerial, psychological, political efforts and so on. The most important thing that the society and the state should need is the component of doctrine of information security in the context of the national security

The article discusses modern forms and methods of bibliographic activity in libraries. The role of modern information and communication technologies is explained. The information society places new demands on all social and communication institutions, including the activation of the formation of electronic document space, libraries and bibliographies. It is noted that the information society, the activation of the formation of electronic document space, puts new demands on all social and communication institutions, including libraries and bibliographies. New information technologies allow to significantly expand, deepen and diversify all forms of information and bibliographic services, which makes them faster, more efficient and more convenient. At the same time, it is explained that with the application of digital technologies, the category of information and bibliographic services is becoming a daily information service used by any reader of any library. Electronic catalogs are becoming powerful information systems to support the work of libraries and perform large-scale tasks.

This article is intended to highlight some current problems of contemporary publishing as a social and cultural phenomenon as a component of the national information space. The author shows a retrospective of development, ups and downs of production of book products both in terms of the number of editions and their circulation. The analysis of books and brochures publishing by print groups, as to the purpose and the enlarged thematic sections is made. Some aspects of the distribution system of publishing products are considered. The characteristic industry problems and trends of development, the role of the state in these processes are represented. The publishing market leaders are shown.

The emergence of new information and communication technologies (ICTs) has generated much debate both in and out of academia in relation to theories ranging from economic advancement to imperialism. In the context of the ‘low-income’ economies, a dominant discourse associated with ICTs persists. The discourse of development predicts that nations which have joined the global market will use ICTs to harness global knowledge that will enable them to be competitive and therefore attain development. This has led to change in policy from international to local as ICTs are embraced as the next big development tool. Recently however, there have been reports of more failures of ICTs initiatives than success as professionals in the industry complain about unsustainability of the systems. A genuine issue is that so far analysis of this discourse has tended to be economically or technically deterministic, with little attention paid to social and cultural perspectives. In order to understand how the role of norms, practices and politics of people in particular communities play in this discourse in ‘low income’ economies, over 1000 semi-qualitative questionnaires were analysed from five geographical locations in The Gambia. A key conclusion that has emerged from the research is that there are different attitudes towards the ICTs in the different locations, which vary from full acceptance to rejection of ICTs. Such diverse reactions are underpinned by the religion and information ecologies in which gender plays a critical part. This result challenges the ICT4D agenda, and might be applied to reports of unsustainable ICT initiatives, especially in Africa.

Abstract Today’s western society is characterized by a transition towards self-organization by citizens in communities. Increasingly, societal problems are addressed by groups of citizens who take action to find concrete solutions. A second feature of western society is that it is an information society in which information and communication play a key role. In this paper, we analyse how these two societal trends come together at the community level. Applying a relational and contingent perspective to how green urban citizens’ initiatives develop, we look into the role of information in their interactions with other people, organizations and institutions. We analyse the mechanisms whereby information plays a role in the citizens’ initiatives. This leads to the conclusion that informational capital is fundamental to the realization of citizens’ initiatives and that informational capital is generated, identified, used and enlarged through the relational strategies of bonding, bridging and linking. It is a process that works in both ways and reinforces citizens’ initiatives.

The advancement of informatization leads to the information society, which is a global trend of information civilization. Present time marks the new information stage of social development, which should be defined as information society, where information and knowledge are the key object of labor of the majority of population, and information technologies are a direct instrument of labor. In this regard, civil proceedings, which is founded on the adversarial principle, also takes the vector towards the information component. The adversarial principle, is in turn is influenced by objective factors (social relations) and subjective factors  (attitude towards the right of subjects), which is the basis for changing the mechanism of its implementation. This directly affect the conduct of judicial proceedings and legal enforcement of adversarial principle. The author determines the key trends in adaptation of the means of implementation of adversarial principle in civil proceedings in the conditions of the use of information technologies. The author suggest dividing the means of implementation of adversarial principle into two groups: for creating an environment of trust and communication interaction between the participants and the court. Based on this, the article analyzes the possible impact of information technologies upon the adversarial principle in civil proceedings, as well as the mechanism of its implementation. The conclusion is made that the adversarial principle in civil proceedings can fall under influence of information technologies, since its essence is formed from objective and subjective factors; while the means of its implementation, which comprise the legal measures of its mechanism through adaptation of information technologies in justice, are susceptible to change.

The article analyzes the issues of improving the use of information and communication technologies in the prevention of offenses on the basis of studying the norms of national legislation, the opinions of domestic and foreign scientists. It is noted that today, cardinal changes in the information sphere at the global level are carried out through the rapid development and dissemination of new information and communication technologies. An increasing influence on the economy, politics, international relations and culture is exerted by the development and improvement of global networks, which open up endless possibilities of direct communication between people in real time. All these advances in the information field create the preconditions for moving towards a completely new type of society - the information society and information space. On the basis of the study, scientifically grounded proposals and recommendations were formulated aimed at improving this area.

Digital book publishing platforms like Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP are often lauded for enabling independent authors unconnected to established publishers to enter the book industry. Despite the appellation, independent authors are not completely autonomous. Book publishing on digital platforms is intensely mediated by the technology companies on which authors rely to publish and disseminate their work. This paper explores the ways in which Amazon KDP undermines the independence of Black authors through its categorization and content moderation systems. The critical framework for this research combines media and platform studies with publishing studies through the application of an ecology model that analyses the technological, economic and socio-cultural contexts in which books and authors circulate online. (van Dijck, 2013). This paper uses a mixed-methods approach consisting of interviews with authors of color and website analysis that collected metadata from Amazon’s Web API. This paper argues that Amazon perpetuates the discrimination Black authors face within the traditional publishing industry through its technological systems. Amazon’s categorisation system uses profile data that has a tendency to sort books by Black authors into categories defined by race regardless of the categories chosen by independent authors. The visibility of books is also impacted by outcomes of Amazon’s content moderation system, Rekognition, which has been proven to be substantially less accurate in accurately identifying darker-skinned individuals (Buolamwini & Gebru, 2018). Amazon acts as a powerful intermediary in the governance and organisation of content in its marketplace due to the increased datafication of books in this sphere.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to empirically test how company size affects the use of Scotland’s place brand in product branding by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the book industry in Scotland. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses a mixed-method approach to investigate place brand adoption for product branding by SMEs in the Scottish book industry through the analysis of Scotland’s place brand identifiers in a corpus of 208 online book blurbs. Findings Results from the analysis show that, amongst SMEs in the Scottish publishing industry, smaller companies are more likely to use Scotland place brand identifiers in product marketing. Originality/value This is the first study to analyze book blurbs from a marketing perspective and it is one of the few articles on product-place co-branding. Additionally, branding in SMEs is a relatively new and uncharted area of research to which this study contributes, and branding in book publishing is also a scarcely researched area, to which this study offers new, empirical data about the relationship between place brands and product brands.
