The list of multiple tasks expected from a school librarian include a wide range of activities. Activity of crucial importance is advocating and argumentation how important is the development of basic literacy skills. The role of school librarians is unavoidable in this process. This presentation will show an example of school library practice and focus on the role of school librarian as designer, provider and researcher in the case study research at the school level. This research was done as an activity during international Erasmus+ project called RECEPTION (Role of Early Childhood Education in positive Transition/Introduction Outcomes for New pupils).

This study presents an attempt to contribute to the field of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) by conceptualizing systems thinking skills of four- to six-year-old preschool children with the role of age in this particular skill. For this purpose, we developed and tested a method and instruments to assess and conceptualize systems thinking skills of 52 preschool children in early childhood education contexts from Turkey and Germany. By employing qualitative case study research, we concluded that the young children showed some signs of complex understanding regarding systems thinking in terms of detecting obvious gradual changes and two-step domino and/or multiple one-way causalities, as well as describing behavior of a balancing loop. However, their capacity was found to be limited when it comes to detecting a reinforcing loop, understanding system mechanisms by acknowledging the unintended consequences, detecting hidden components and processes, demonstrating multi-dimensional perspective, solving problems through high-leverage interventions, and predicting the future behavior of the system. Age had a notable effect on the total systems thinking mean scores of the participants.

This case study investigates into the role of the school librarians and their collaboration with other subject teachers in guiding primary four (P4) students through inquiry-based learning (IBL) group projects. To maximize the learning supports that students can get from doing the projects, the researchers of this study promote a close partnership between the school librarian and three other kinds of teachers (General Studies, Chinese, and Information Technology / IT) who can contribute to P4 General Studies’ group projects. The study tries to understand: (1). the effectiveness of the librarian-teacher partnership approach in helping students to learn from their project works, and (2). the issues and challenges encountered by students and teachers in the process of implementing such teaching and learning model.

International guidelines for school libraries and school librarians exist. However, the role of professional library associations in school librarian education has been largely overlooked. This exploratory study examines the role of professional library associations in Brazil, Honduras, Nepal, and the United States (specifically California) relative to school librarian pre-service education and in-service professional development. The associations are analyzed in light of communities of practice and the contingency theory of socialization. The findings demonstrate how professional library associations provide culturally relevant professional development that melds professional expertise and socialization.

This qualitative case study research examines the perceptions of three U.S. principals as they work for social justice in the school level meso context as enacted through the lens of their micro contextual values and beliefs. Through interviews with three rural high school principals, we look to the influence of context on decision making through a study of the principals’ articulations of the role of context in supporting or hindering their work for marginalized children. Findings from this study point to the culture of the community in which the school was situated and the challenges sometimes associated with the community as the most mentioned meso factor that guided the principals’ practice. The micro context of the leader’s personal story was a testament to what they valued and how they enacted these values as a leader for social justice. The study concludes with a model which reconceptualizes the macro, meso, and micro relationships not as a directional relationship that indicates the influence of one context onto another, but as a structural bond suggesting interdependency.

ResumoA pesquisa versa sobre o papel dos(as) bibliotecários(as) escolares com relação às questões de gênero e sexualidade. Trata-se de uma pesquisa exploratória e levantamento bibliográfico da literatura científica das duas áreas. Como fundamentação conceitual, abordaram-se os conceitos de biblioteca e bibliotecário(a) escolar, bem como os conceitos de gênero e sexualidade. Buscou-se reunir e confrontar as literaturas a fim de estabelecer uma ligação entre conceitos. Nas considerações finais, enfatiza-se a importância do papel do(a) bibliotecário(a) no processo de ensino-aprendizagem das questões que envolvem a temática de gênero e sexualidade na escola. Abstract: The research deals with the role of school librarians in relation to issues of gender and sexuality. It is an exploratory research and bibliographical survey of the scientific literature of the two areas. As conceptual foundation, the concepts of library and school library, as well as the concepts of gender and sexuality were approached. It sought to gather and confront literatures in order to establish a connection between concepts. In the final considerations, the importance of the role of the librarian in the teaching-learning process of issues involving the theme of gender and sexuality in the school is emphasized. This article considers the role of generalization in comparative case studies, using as exemplars the contributions to this special issue on climate change politics. As a research practice, generalization is a logical argument for extending one’s claims beyond the data, positing a connection between events that were studied and those that were not. No methodological tradition is exempt from the requirement to demonstrate a compelling logic of generalization. The article presents a taxonomy of the logics of generalization underlying diverse research methodologies, which often go unstated and unexamined. I introduce the concept of resonance groups, which provide a causeway for cross-system generalization from single case studies. Overall the results suggest that in the comparative study of complex political systems, case study research is, ceteris paribus, on par with large-N research with respect to generalizability.

<p>The purpose of this study was to find out how parents can contribute to the early reading development of children in a Grade R class. The research was conducted in a low-income area in the Cape Flats. To gain a deeper understanding of the parents’ cultural values and aspirations when interacting with the Home-School Partnership Programme (HSPP) literacy programme, I elected to frame my study within the work of Paulo Freire, who argued that the purpose of education, at the time of his writing, was to make oppressed people passive. Qualitative data were gathered in a case study research design, utilising focus group interviews and semistructured questionnaire tools, as well as footage from a local broadcasting studio. The findings show that the parents, who were previously unable to assist their children with literacy skills at home, were keen to change and to be active partners in their children’s early literacy learning. This research is a descriptive example of how the home, the school and the community can collaborate in a meaningful and sustained way, especially in poverty-stricken areas where unemployment is rife.</p><p><strong>Keywords: </strong>case study, Grade R, literacy, parents; Paulo Freire; poverty; qualitative</p>

This paper provides a study of the school library programs sponsored by the Evergreen Education Foundation (EEF) and identifies the vital role of school libraries in improving students’ information quality. Based on analyzes Strategies for building literacy skills in the library of Tianzhu No.1 High School, the study confirmed the program developed reading and literacy skills among students. As EEF programs continue to expand into other locations in China, it is the authors’ hope that this study may provide useful information and analysis based upon which decisions about future programs can be made. It is also their hope that this study provides impetus for more studies on the rural library programs in other areas of China or programs in other underdeveloped regions of the world.

The subject of this research are small and medium enterprises (SME) in the Polish economy, the support of this sector by local government and the functioning of small and medium enterprises in the local system of the town and commune of Pułtusk. The aim of this study is to present the condition and the role of SME in the local systems in light of the selected features of this sector in the country and evaluation of support for SME given by local government of the town and the commune. The case study research methods applied were literature research, documentation review and survey-based research using questionnaire. The survey was conducted in spring, 2014, on a random sample. The research resulted in learning the profile of a local entrepreneurs and the action characteristics of SME in the examined unit. The diagnosis of the sector’s situation was made, the stimulating and limiting factors of its prosperity were identified. The SME support system of local government and the entrepreneurs’ expectations towards commune government in the field of development of local enterprises were evaluated. The results and conclusions confirm the need for development of local government activity in formulating and implementation of the development of local enterprises policy.
