Florida Department of Transportation yearly maintenance and rehabilitation activities include milling and resurfacing of approximately 2,000 lane miles of roadway, with an average resurfacing depth of about 2.1 in. (55 mm). These activities result in the generation and accumulation of roughly 1.8 million tons of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) each year. The use of elevated quantities of RAP in asphalt pavement provides an environmentally responsible solution to the accumulated RAP surplus in some urban areas, while at the same time offering an economical pavement maintenance and rehabilitation option to local agencies facing budget constraints. The objective of this project was to compare the performance of mixtures with 60% RAP content to be used primarily on low volume roads (average daily traffic <750 vehicles) and suggest adequate test methods within the context of a balanced mix design approach. To accomplish this objective, three types of mixtures were considered: hot, cold with emulsion, and cold with foamed binder. Performance testing included intermediate temperature cracking, rutting, moisture susceptibility, and durability. The hot recycled mixtures showed good moisture susceptibility and cracking resistance, especially when rejuvenators were incorporated. The cold recycled mixtures showed poor moisture susceptibility and durability characteristics, which were alleviated when hydrated lime or Portland cement was incorporated in the emulsified and foamed mixtures, respectively. Most hot recycled mixtures, and all the cold recycled mixtures, exhibited poor rutting behavior, likely because of the harsh conditions of the test. A life-cycle cost analysis demonstrated more favorable savings when cold recycled mixtures were used.

In this paper, the research of Low-Noise Asphalt Pavement(LNAP)mix design with the crumb rubber has been studied, including materials selection, gradation selection, asphalt content selection, performance tests, and so on. To verify the high-temperature performance and the effect of noise reducing, the new test methods are studied in the lab. The On-board Sound Intensity (OBSI) is developed to measure the tire-pavement noise and evaluate the noise reducing effect of trial pavement. The QC and QA of LNAP is researched by the trial pavement and the tire-pavement noise is measured by the OBSI,the LNAP has not only the good performance but also low noise than the conventional asphalt pavement.

The main purpose of recycling is to reuse existing pavement material. First this paper reviews the necessary, feasibility and mechanistic analysis of recycled asphalt mixture, then summarizes the findings of a laboratory study to characterize and design recycled asphalt concrete mixtures using different tests. The laboratory tests carried out on the material were conventional test methods including unconfined compressive strength, cleavage strength, resilient modulus and shrinkage properties tests. The results of the laboratory can be taken as reference in design, engineering and further research.

The two Baltic countries, Lithuania and Latvia, use asphalt mixtures with granite slag that is imported from other countries to install the top layer of asphalt pavement, which is quite expensive. One of the requirements for aggregates used in road construction is mechanical properties. There are some differences between these countries based on national requirements. The article presents test methods for determining the mechanical properties of aggregates. According to them, the mechanical properties of aggregates were tested: resistance to fragmentation, wear, polishing and to wear by abrasion from studded tyre. Tested aggregates were Lithuanian dolomite quarry stone, which was made based on the developed and common technologies as well as imported granite from Ukraine. The analysis and evaluation of the test results have been carried out by the requirements for mineral aggregates of Lithuania and Latvia. Santrauka Dvi Baltijos šalys, Lietuva ir Latvija, asfalto dangos viršutiniam sluoksniui įrengti naudoja asfalto mišinius su granito skalda, kuri importuojama iš kitų šalių, o tai gana brangu. Vienas iš reikalavimų mineralinėms medžiagoms, naudojamoms kelių tiesyboje, yra mechaninės savybės. Jos minėtose šalyse pagal nacionalinius normatyvinius reikalavimus šiek tiek skiriasi. Straipsnyje pateikti mineralinių medžiagų mechaninių savybių nustatymo bandymo metodų aprašai. Pagal juos atlikti skaldų mechaninių savybių bandymai: atsparumas smūgiams, trupinimui, dėvėjimuisi, poliruojamumui (LST EN 1097-8:2009. Bandymai užpildų mechaninėms ir fizikinėms savybėms nustatyti. 8 dalis. Akmens poliruojamumo nustatymas) bei dygliuotoms padangoms. Ištirtos skaldos yra Lietuvos dolomito karjero skalda, pagaminta pagal patobulintą ir įprastą technologijas, bei granito skalda iš Ukrainos. Atlikta gautų bandymų rezultatų analizė bei vertinimas pagal Lietuvos ir Latvijos reikalavimus mineralinėms medžiagoms.

Moisture susceptibility is still one of the primary causes of distress in flexible pavements, reducing the pavements’ durability. A very large number of tests are available to evaluate the susceptibility of a binder aggregate combination. Tests can be conducted on the asphalt mixture, either in a loose or compacted form, or on the individual components of an asphalt pavement. Apart from various mechanisms and models, fundamental concepts have been proposed to calculate the thermodynamic tendency of a binder aggregate combination to adhere and/or debond under wet conditions. The aim of this review is to summarize literature findings and conclusions, regarding these concepts as carried out in the CEDR project FunDBits. The applied test methods, the obtained results, and the validation or predictability of these fundamental approaches are discussed.

To evaluate the pre and post change of structure strength of old asphalt pavement field hot regeneration, we use the portable falling weight deflectometer method (PFWD) and benkelman beam method (BB) respectively to do the field test research. The field test researches rely on the ANXIN highway old asphalt pavement field hot regeneration project. We got the data about pre and post regenerations asphalt pavement static bending deflection (l0), PFWD dynamic deflection (lp) and PFWD dynamic modulus (EP). The correlation analysis among static bending deflection, PFWD dynamic deflection and PFWD dynamic modulus suggest that PFWD method is a more stable and reliable method than BB method and PFWD method can be a new evaluation technology for the old asphalt pavement field hot regenerations pavement strength.
